I think the problem with a non-romanceable female was likely in large part returning/established male characters already fitting in those slots. By that, I mostly mean Varric and Cole. We know Cole isn't an LI, I don't think Varric will be. (Sorry if that offends anyone still hopeful for him, I don't mean to.) And I think that means they needed to make the one remaining non-LI companion a female. Solas or Blackwall. I can see it being Blackwall and them not wanting to make two female warriors, as well as maybe having trouble seeing a female equivalent of Blackwall. Of course, I'm not saying I agree with that. And I definitely could be wrong with my estimation.

This is the problem with having so few female companions.  I want every one of our current female companions to be a romance option, but I wish there were a fourth additional female companion who was not.  

 

Yeah I wasn't originally bothered by the so few females cause I assumed we were going with the 2/2/2 LIs and that left 1 female companion unavailable. Now with the 8 LIs thing =/ there really could've been another female companion.

Agreed   I remember ALWAYS having to share all my candy with my cousin, didn't matter if it was a holiday or a present all the candy got put into a big pile and we had to split it up evenly every single time.

I don't necessarily buy all of the speculation that IB is the race-gated romance. Solas makes a lot more sense as being race-gated to me.

 

Remember, everything we know about Solas is about how he's connected to the fade: I imagine he'd have a more difficult time romancing a dwarf. Qunari also claim that they don't dream (according to the Wiki page on the Fade), so maybe he's human/elf only.

@aza Fairly and evenly can safely mean equal most in cases.  That's what I meant; David Gaider said that to give proof that this whole equal aspect of the race-gating that some of the folks are thinking is going to happen is a fallacy.  Some races might get more than others for LI options.  There is even a chance (as much as I loathe to admit it,) that some players would not have their preferred race as a LI at all.

No, I'm more saying I'm not sure they'd be inclined to make two grizzled warrior ladies in the same game, generally. In this scenario, Mrs. Blackwall would still be a non-LI. But a concept like Blackwall as a woman (hardened, older warrior, grizzled, boisterous and maybe a bit lewd, but a strong, competent leader) would be extremely unconventional. Bioware is leaning there with some companions already, but I'm not sure how likely they would be to put this in with Cassandra already in game. So, if they wanted to do this concept.. non-LI slot as a male, by my theory.

While I disagree with the logic of Iron Bull being race gated(not breaking someone to me is more a class thing; an elf or dwarf warrior would be a lot less likely to break than a human mage), I don't much see this as being a part of Solas' character that would relate to him being a romance option.

Aveline doesn't seem much like Blackwall at all to me. I think she could be his daughter and she doesn't seem to have his lewd sense of humor, by far. Aveline reminds me a lot of a less angry Cassandra.

Agreed.  I don't know Aveline's age, but she seemed like she was not much older than Hawke at the beginning of the game.

Maybe not older, but she's  definitely experienced.  The point I was trying to make is that Bioware already made an unconventional female character.  That was Avenline.  She was a strong, competent, hardened woman who had a unique relationship with the PC without it being romantic in nature.

Solas could just as easily be an ungated bi LI to balance with Josephine (ungated bi female LI) as a gated LI, though. There are only 2 gated LIs, so one of the three must be ungated, and it figures it would be a bi male to balance against Josephine. I believe Solas will be more race blind. From his interview, I don't really think he'll focus on that sort of thing. I also think Iron Bull could be backed up in story, but largely based on the awkwardness of posing his giant model with dwarves, especially.  

 

I'm looking for it to be IB/Viv as gated bi LIs and Solas as an ungated bi LI, so I'm not writing him off, I just don't really see this fitting the little we know about him. Granted, we don't know much and it may be true that he's the gated option. Basically anyone could be, for reason we don't understand yet.

personally, I think the romances will be the confirmed 5, iron bull, Vivienne, and one more.

The last one won't be Lelianna or Cole. I think that has been confirmed.

That leaves Varric, Blackwall, and Solas.

If it is Varric, it would be interesting because one male and one female from each class and from the advisors would be romance options, Blackwall could be the tragic chats are though, so a romance that ends with fighting with him in the deep roads. (Or if he is strictly straight talk about going through pregnancy without him or something?)
Solas would be fun because it would give Cole an actual family in a way, I think. (Cole, Solas, and Solas' boyfriend/girlfriend)

My personal guess though. Is the third one.

I know if he wasn't, I'd be happy to have my best bud in Thedas back and play the game to see if anyone else trips my trigger.

You want to romance Bianca?  The crossbow would be really weird and I doubt that Bianca the dwarf is going to come back as a fling.

 

Or do you want him to still pine for her and possibly reunite with her?
