May I ask a question?  If Varric is a LI, how would you guys react?  Please don't dismiss this as a case of "It can't happen," because I want your honest opinion about the idea.

I know if he wasn't, I'd be happy to have my best bud in Thedas back and play the game to see if anyone else trips my trigger.

I'm a little torn.

On the one hand, I love Varric's personality, easy-going demeanor, and over-all good guy qualities.

On the other hand, I'm not sure whether to be happy for this game since they seem to be changing him into a very sad, shell-shocked veteran. It's like looking forward DA:A's chipper, flirty, wise-cracking Anders is coming back onto to find out he's moody, depressed, brooding, and mage-obsessed for DA2. You think, "Great. He's romance-able now that they've changed his personality from the one I fell for."

I guess it won't be such an extreme case since Anders absorbed Justice and so there was a HUGE reason for his dramatic personality change, and I'm definitely not trying to disparage people suffering from PTSD, survivor's guilt, trauma, etc. It's just that if Varric does become romanceable, I hope they let him retain some of the qualities people fell for in the first place, not completely rewrite the character or make some contrived angst and drama that takes over all the romance.

When people asked, "Why isn't Varric romance-able???" in DA2, they weren't saying it because they wanted yet another angst-fest like with Anders and Fenris.

I'd love Varric as an LI, but I haven't really allowed myself to hope for it. I'd also rather have a non-race gated Solas than a Varric that's exclusive to dwarves (even though I would totally play a dwarf for Varric). No comment on the Bianca thing other than that I trust Mary Kirby to resolve it in a satisfying way.

As for predictions though, I've found myself leaning more and more towards the three remaining LIs being Solas, Iron Bull, and Varric. I don't think Blackwall's got a very good chance because of his age and his writer tweeting that he reminded her of her dad/other people's dads. Plus he's yet another big burly warrior when we already have a very good chance of getting Iron Bull. Iron Bull's almost definitely in by this point, and it makes most sense for him and Varric to be the ones who are race-gated. I just can't think of any compelling reason why Viv would be, plus having every single female companion be an LI is kinda gross.

So my prediction is this:

Straight: Cass, Cullen, Varric (dwarves and maybe elves, could also be bi but every indication so far is that he's straight)

Bi: Josie, Solas, Iron Bull (qunari and maybe humans)

Gay: Dorian, Sera

Every possible combination of race/gender/sexuality would get at least two options, which has been the Dragon Age team's stated goal with romances. Gay humans and qunari would get three options and straight women would get three options.

The only romance that I've googled so far that seemed outright creepy in ME (not counting Ms. Non Standard Game Over herself, Morinth) is Jacob's.

The prizeeeeee.

Jacob was just... I don't even have words. The only reason I can't describe it as creepy is that it's so ridiculous that I can't believe it was meant to be representative of humans.

I thought Tali was creepy because of her worship of Shepard. It wasn't just that she was attracting to him - it was that he was some sort of ideal to her. That made me very uncomfortable.

Honestly, when I think about it more, I kind of hope Blackwall will be chosen for a bi male LI over Varric, if not Solas. I hope nobody gets angry about this, but the more I think about it, the more it just seems like he would seem overwhelmingly like a "m/m afterthought" romance. Varric has his thing with Bianca, obviously, but he also talks about women often and, even though he said he wasn't into humans, I seem to remember people mentioning him calling female Hawke "beautiful", while he says nothing like that about males. I think they would either have to change his characterization to be more openly into guys, or they'd end up with another Zevran type situation where there character seems obviously designed as a f/m romance primarily.

So, honestly, I don't feel good about Varric as one of the bi males. I feel like it would be better to choose a character with a blank slate that they could tailor equally to both sides. I'm sure there are other guys that are into Varric that aren't bothered by this, but it does kind of bother me.

What about Anders, that many pepole accused BioWare of changing to bi because he made several flirtatious comments about women and none about men prior to DA2?  He's proof that previous behavior towards one gender or another means precisely jack when it comes to DA characters.

If Varric is bisexual, then he's been that way from the start.   I can appreciate why you're concerned about another Zevran situation if Varric is bi though, but I wouldn't stress it.

I found myself rather glad that the name Jacob took that character off of the LI table for me.  I can't get past him having the same name as my youngest brother and the rather breathy way that FemShep talked to him creeped me right out.  Seriously ME team, what the hell were you thinking?

Funny, you just described the way a lot of the Liara romance made me feel, even though I did enjoy it.

It really creeped me out because (as the quarian on Thessia mocks) "oh she's fragile~ she'll get sick if we're intimate." and that hit all my squick buttons.

Okay, I can't stand not knowing any more. What was wrong with the Jacob romance?

Besides Shepard sounding like she was going to force herself on him every time they spoke?

If so then I don't know I could never make it past more than two conversations with that tone of voice the VA used *shudder*

The one black man you can romance in any Bioware games and he dumps your character because he knocks up another woman.

Just for me:

FemShep sounds all breathy and flirting, even when picking a non-flirt question.  Ew.

It's rather cheesy and hamfisted, like they are acting out a Harlequin romance novel, and the romance dialogue between them is even worse.  He refers to sex with Shep as "the prize."  To top it off, in the 6 months (in-game time) between ME2 and ME3, he cheats on Shep and even knocks up another woman just for good measure.

For the first black human male LI companion in BioWare's history...it was a real swing and a miss.

Anders never talked much about women at all in DA2 and his main "lost love" story is a man. He was basically an entirely new person. I mean, I said in my post that they could change his characterization, but I'm not sure if people actually want something like Anders to happen with Varric. If they make it so he does openly express his interest in men, then that's fine, but I feel like a lot of people will not be at all happy with this.

I am aware it's possible for a man to be bi and show more interest in women, but I'm very tired of getting these characters in media compared to any alternative. The shear amount of them is really grating and I would personally rather avoid another. If it's going to be similar to his characterization in DA2 then, honestly, I have to say I really don't want that.

But if Bianca was some other crossdressing dwarf, then maybe we are back in business. I will leave that on the table.

Oh god don't get me started.

Just...why.

What was so hard about giving him a crap amount of romance content like all the other ME2 LIs?

And Brynn.

Ouch. That hurts. Just hearing it... All of it.

And it is rather strange. He seems pretty cool with a male Shepard (although I don't think that's a popular opinion either...).

For the record, I highly doubt Varric is bisexual.  I'm about 99% certain that he's a heterosexual dwarf and if he's available, he'll be for women only (regardless of any race gating.)

However, if he is bisexual and folks don't like it, they'll have to deal with it.  I honestly don't care if Varric being a bisexual LI makes a few folks get their panties in a twist. (note: not directing that at you Mort, just in general.)  Most will just get over it, and laugh at those that would continue to make a big stink of it.

The same reason it was too hard to make Thane's death not be idiotic, because REASONS :wizard:

First time I played that without a Jacob romance though I was under the impression that if you DON'T romance him he got with someone else which should have been what happened if they were so desperate to make Jacob a family man or something like that.

So... straight females get Cullen, Blackwall, Iron Bull, Solas, maybe Varric

Straight males get Cassandra, Josephine, and (hopefully) Vivienne

Kinda favors the females IMO.

I do hope there is another female out there who will be available to the straight males.

Jacob's romance is also off-putting because he's kind of brusque towards Shepard. So it seems like she's way too into him and he's got negative interest in her.

Also, he says that Miranda is too good for him. But I guess Shepard isn't too good for him!

(until she is? n't?)

Not to mention that Jacob undergoes a complete personality change once you get the Normandy. The beginning, he's all 'We got to level with Shepard and trust her' and 'It's good to have you here.' to 'I don't want to talk about anything with you cause I am just here to fight so don't try prying.'

It just felt all kinds of wrong trying to talk to him what with Shepard's awful flirty voice when trying to be diplomatic to his attitude. After a bit, I just stopped talking to him.

When BioWare decided that their 6 dudes where cooler that what ever women could have taken some of their spots, they skewed the decks in favor of women and/or gay males.

I wonder if they were aware of all the implications that were going to happen down the road though...

Let's deal with facts:

Straight males currently have:  Cassandra, Josephine

Straight females currently have:  Cullen

Gay males currently have:  Dorian

Lesbians currently have:  Sera, Josephine

There are still three more to be announced of some combination of:  Vivienne, Varric, Solas, Blackwall, and Iron Bull.  Three of them will be romances.  One of those males will most likely be an ungated bisexual romance and the remaining two will likely be race-gated.

No one is being favored as of now and we don't know what it will end up being.

That literally can't be the lineup. Sera and Dorian push that up to 10 LIs. Two need to be shaved off.

The devs have confirmed that all 8 romances will either be with companions or advisers (barring Leliana because she was a romance in Origins), so Cass, Josie, and potentially Viv are the only options for straight men. Consequence of having so few women in the party, I guess.

I hope there will be another female LI too, but mostly for the sake of my lesbian friends. I know some folks are uncomfortable with all the female Inquisitors being LIs (I assume primarily because it makes women seems more like objects to be possessed by straight men?), but If Viv isn't romance-able, lesbian PCs will be getting the short end of the stick with regards to options, too.

Edit: To clarify, I'm talking simple numbers of options, not the quality there of-- I'm not interested in arguing which LI are "good" or which are going to "suck" because I don't believe we can know that (or even if we 'know', that we'd all agree with who deserves which of those labels).
