If it helps at all, BioWare has done friendship-turned-romance before, like with Mass Effect.  I have played the games twice now, once as a FemShep with Liara, once with Garrus.  The Garrus friendship didn't suffer or turn creepy even as a romance; it was still as a good as before, only with a little bit of a bonus.  I've heard the same about the Tali romance (the other friendship-turned-romance.)

I know it's a different team, but I really it hope it sets your mind at ease.   :)

I have an opinion on this aspect of the "I don't want Varric to be an LI" mentality;

Varric isn't our best friend. He's Hawke's best friend. There's no indication that he's going to play the same role to our Inquisitor as he did to Hawke, and I'd argue that there's a fair bit of evidence against it.

This is where that separation comes in, and where the comparison to ME breaks down; there, we were shepard all the way through. Here, we're a new character and we don't have the same relationship with Varric that Hawke did.

Like I said earlier, it wasn't a perfect example, but to me it was a great example on how BioWare could handle both a friendship and a relationship without one suffering for the sake of the other.   ;)

Wondering if that's what bothers me about a Varric LI.  I want him to be a LI, but I almost find him...untouchable.

But I'd want a better reason than, "Because Bianca."  Maybe, "You're like Aveline, scare the **** out of me," or, "Had my fill of troublemakers, thank you."

Still want him to be a romance, if only for my lady dwarves, seeing as my male dwarves have apparently been denied Dagna.*

*I like call backs.  Dwarf warden=dwarfquisitor+dwarf LI, at least for early playthroughs

True but it would also only give them one less romance than straight gals and gay guys. It would actually work out much less skewed than it appears with a 3/5 split. Wouldn't be my preferred choice, but it's just a feeling that I got.

I want this to happen because I want to see the forums blow up. Can I please get that?

I agree, but I think part of it is that an effort needs to be made on the part of the player, rather than Bioware, to make that separation and realize that Varric and Hawke's relationship has no bearing on Varric and the Inquisitor's relationship.

That being said, I have my doubts as to whether or not Varric will be a romance option(I tend to agree that he's hetrosexual and I don't think they'll add any more straight options).

I hope there will be another female LI too, but mostly for the sake of my lesbian friends. I know some folks are uncomfortable with all the female Inquisitors being LIs (I assume primarily because it makes women seems more like objects to be possessed by straight men?), but If Viv isn't romance-able, lesbian PCs will be getting the short end of the stick with regards to options, too.

So what else is new? lol

I don't know, 3 straight romances (Cass, Cullen, Varric (rg,)) 2 gay, (Dorian and Sera)  3 bisexual (Josie, Solas/Blackwall/Vivienne, Iron Bull(rg)) makes sense to me, factoring in race-gating.

Again, I have long since tossed out any sort of sense of complete equality and fairness for LIs out the window.  The only thing I was sure of was that each of the more common sexual orientations (straight women and men, gay and lesbian, bi/pan) would get at least one LI.  Anything else is fair game and I haven't been factoring in perfect equality into my LI guesses for weeks now.

Honestly, I think Viv will probably be in the lineup. I'll be surprised if the final count is 5/3 for LIs. I think they'll distribute more fairly than that.

That's actually the mind I've been keeping about Varric's return. I was glad to see him back and and was looking forward to having adventures with him again, and then realized it wouldn't, and shouldn't be the same as when I played Hawke. It's not that Varric and the Inquisitor couldn't be good friends anyway, but I will need to approach him as a new person and not an old friend. Varric may get over Bianca and love the Inquisitor, or he may be less the carefree dwarf we remember him as and is just too tired to care about such things. He's seen and done a lot over the years. Certainly he's changed a bit by now.

Sometimes I wonder if the idea of romancing Varric is what a lot of people are wrapped up with, rather than romancing Varric. Kind of like how some people want to be married just so they can have a big wedding and plan a huge party, but are sort of lost on what the marriage actually means to them beyond that.

Not meant in any way to be offensive or pick at people, so I hope it didn't come across as such. Just idle thoughts.

err what?

Lesbian have classy-Josephine and yolo-Sera already for them. The only people currently getting the short end of the stick are straight female PCs.

They are currently stuck with Alistair/Carth/Anomen/Kaidan/Sky-wannabe Cullen has their sole straight romance and one bisexual dude (or more) among: grumpy-Varric, ptsd-yolo-casual-sex-IronBull, introvet-elf-Solas and terminally-ill-vulgar-old-man-Blackwall.

Gay male PCs aren't that much lucky: fashionista-Dorian or one of the above.

To be fair, there are a lot of people that really, really like all of those males and not everyone likes Josephine or Sera. This is a perception issue.

I want to romance Varric because of who he is.  It isn't that it's just the idea I like, it's the person behind it.  It's Varric himself, not because I expect this world changing romance from BioWare. I simply enjoy the character and I really feel a romance with him would add some great story depth for those that wish to pursue it.  I know that he's not going to be the same person that we met in DA2, but from the looks of it, much of his personality remains intact.   And while some people want to get married for the sake of the event (or because they feel they have to do it,) most people that I've known personally aren't that way.

To be fair, I can take what you said about Varric and apply it other members of the returning cast, like Cassandra and Cullen.  Is it the character that people want to romance, or is it just the idea of romancing them that they cling to?

For the most part, for all three fanbases, I'm betting the overall answer would be no, that it isn't just the idea but the person themselves that they are attracted to.  Not everyone would agree of course, but I can see a general agreement being reached about that one.

Edit: Huh?  Varric..grumpy??  Okay, please show me any examples, because the devs only mentioned that he wasn't going to be as happy-go-lucky as he was last time.  That doesn't say, "grumpy" to me.

The same reason it was too hard to make Thane's death not be idiotic, because REASONS :wizard:

First time I played that without a Jacob romance though I was under the impression that if you DON'T romance him he got with someone else which should have been what happened if they were so desperate to make Jacob a family man or something like that.

lmao yeah Thane jumping onto Kai Leng's sword was a sight let me tell you.

Yep. But lazy devs decided to have him cheat instead. ME1 LIs stay loyal through freaking death. Jacob can't even keep it in his pants for six damn months. Classy.
