I still like the "Human inquisitor is Cullen's brother/sister/cousin/whatever" theory to explain why Cullen would be racegated, extracted and applied to a female LI.
That would be dumb.
Oh, our favorite sometimes romance subject: IB's peen as LI.

You know that they debunked Cullen and the Inquisitor being related in the Twitter thread, right?

Teasing guys.
That would be dumb.
"Inquisitor of X race is related to Companion Y" is at least an actual story reason that provides a meaningful difference in racial playthroughs, compared to "Companion Y just isn't into race X" or "We lack the imagination to figure out how to safely have sex with the Iron Bull".

Didn't know that, but I'm not surprised- doubted the theory when I first heard it. That doesn't mean I didn't like the theory. It's the only explanation for race gating that I've seen that I have liked.
Not applied specifically to Cullen, mind you. Just in general.

Fair enough. ![]()
You mean besides the whole, "this character just doesn't like this race" thing which I found to be an acceptable explanation? :v
Aaaaand I'm off, happy discussing to you all!

It's likely that racegating is a matter of technical reasons covered up with story reasons.
In the example you posed first, I can't imagine a technical reason where they couldn't animate a straight love scene for Cullen, but could do so for dwarves, elves, and qunari.
I don't like racegating period, but at least in the case of technical reasons it is a lot more understandable.
You mean besides the whole, "this character just doesn't like this race" thing which I found to be an acceptable explanation? :v
I don't find it to be an acceptable explanation.
Least not until they also start gating the choices you make on the face slider in character creation.

Considering what the OP says, I don't think they decide who's race gated and then plan the cinematics around that. It seems to be the other way around; they pitch the idea, then see what works in the cinematics. A couple of the LIs couldn't animate properly with all models probably had to be race gated to the races that did animate correctly with each other.
So while they probably will give some in-game reason for the race gating (just like the great Jaws analogy on the previous page,) I'm betting because of it's technical limitations forcing the devs to do so.

Ah, yes. "I don't like your face/race" racism. That's a character trait I find attractive in friends, colleagues, and lovers. Not.
My opinion of companions would definitely sour if that was a real thing.
I don't consider race gating to be the proper, practical solution to the technical issues problem.
I've also heard it was for technical reasons. Looking for a source now. Otherwise, it's just the usual game of Telephone that happens on the forums.

Last piece of news for today. There's 8 romances, only 2 of those have any racial preferences (for story reasons) #DAI #ImExhausted
What sort of gating "story reasons" are people expecting besides just aesthetic preference? What story reasons would you accept?
I don't consider race gating to be the proper, practical solution to the technical issues problem.
Then what you would suggest, if you were in that position?

Yet the OP lists technical reasons as well. I really think we're jumping to conclusions as to what "story" means here.

If the problem is that it's too difficult or expensive or time consuming to
make scenes with certain player races, then what is the right solution? Fade to black? No romance at all?\
I don't like racegating, but I'm not sure if I'd prefer no romance at all with a character.

While I'm not a fan of fade-to-black, I would find it preferable to not allowing the option at all, so I'd simply block and "shoot" any love scenes in a way that it fades to black before the hard to animate parts happen, while still leaving little doubt as to just what is about to happen.

Fade to black. I'm not a fan of it, but I'd prefer it to race gating.
Besides, all the scenes are fade to black; just a matter of when it fades.
I still like the "Human inquisitor is Cullen's brother/sister/cousin/whatever" theory to explain why Cullen would be racegated, extracted and applied to a female LI.
This is like...You honestly think they're going to racegate Cullen for Humans? He will only romance Qunari and Dwarves and Elves? Just... For some reason, I really don't think so. Didn't they said the Human Mage inquisitor isn't a noble like the warrior/rogue? Will he still be related to her? Cousins maybe?
I think you guys are reaching a little bit. Like no one wanted to even consider that he might be gated for Qunari, but for him to be gated for HUMANS due to a relation to both the mage and warrior/rogue inquisitor is totally plausible? Like is this just wishful thinking or did I miss something where they implied a romance would be gated due to incest?
Why does everyone like this theory so much?
ETA: It got debunked in the time I took to write this????
So the way I see it, if two romances are race gated because of technical issues with the animation in the cinematics, then the most likely candidates are Varric and Iron Bull, as they're the two companions with significantly different body types.
What sort of gating "story reasons" are people expecting besides just aesthetic preference? What story reasons would you accept?
Eh, I'll bite:
Vivienne is from Orlais, in a high position of power. She could be locked out to elves, since they are of the lowest surface race. (not group, I said race so please put down the pitchforks pro-Mage players)
Iron Bull could "break" someone, and might be reluctant to romance an elf or even a dwarf as a result. He might feel the most comfortable bedding humans and fellow Qunari.
Cullen could be gated because he grew up in the Chantry and might be opposed to elves, dwarves and Quanri.
Solas could be gated to elves only, since the whole "Fate of his people" thing might come into play. Producing a child with anyone but another elf could run counter to that.
Dorian might be race gated to dwarves, simply due to nothing in common. No mages among the dwarves, so a possibility that the dwarves couldn't understand him.
I could go on, but you get the general idea. This isn't my opinions on the subject, just the general comments I've seen in the forums on the subject.
Fade to black. I'm not a fan of it, but I'd prefer it to race gating.
Besides, all the scenes are fade to black; just a matter of when it fades.
However, it isn't just sex scenes they are talking about when it comes to possible cinematic issues. They also mentioned scenes like hugging and kissing will be in the game as well. Those shouldn't be cut out.
Then what you would suggest, if you were in that position?
If you play Elf and IB is race-gated against elves and dwarves for technical reasons, then rather than getting into sticky wicket and potentially problematic issues just... never have a flirt option available?

No, I don't think they'd ever do that.
I just like the theory.

I think people were using it as an example of a reason they thought might be interesting not that they wanted him race gated against humans. At least I was using it as example as an interesting reason why someone may be gated off to my PC. Just would like a creative reason for an LI to be gated from my PC without the LI coming off with a touch of fantasy racism is all ![]()
