Why does everyone like this theory so much?
I think for a lot of people it's because they like the idea of humans being shut out instead of the lesser used races, since that was the expectation.

I think people were using it as an example of a reason they thought might be interesting not that they wanted him race gated against humans. At least I was using it as example as an interesting reason why someone may be gated off to my PC. Just would like a creative reason for an LI to be gated from my PC without the LI coming off with a touch of fantasy racism is all
Pretty much.
The idea of a companion being related to our inquisitor if, and only if, we select a certain race is something that hasn't happened before and would be a legitimate reason towards baring a romance option.
Wouldn't have to be Cullen. Wouldn't necessarily have to be human if it were Cullen; we don't know anything about Cullen. He could well be elf-blooded and our elf-quisitor is his long lost dalish sibling.
Ok, that one's a bit too much of a stretch.
Still, it's the only theory I've seen that hasn't left a bad taste in my mouth.
Fair enough. I still think if Cullen is going to be gated at all, it'll be for Qunari and Dwarves. People saying he 'might' have a problem with them are forgetting Cullen has always been kind of a jerk about other religions and cultures, to put it lightly. I just hope we can end up changing his views on things a little.
Speaking of Dorian has anyone posted that lovely amio strip of him with a human male PC on here yet?
Yes that one! Simply lovely :3 The surprised look on the PC is adorable ![]()
amio raising my expectations for romances every time I see their work ![]()
I got the inspiration to romance Dorian with a Cadash bc of her comic where he fails bc Cadash is romancing Cass X3
That one made me feel so bad for Dorian it was a complete swing and a miss xD I'm still digging the idea of romancing him with a qunari mage but I may try to copy that male dwarf design of theirs and romance Dorian with them as well that height difference with them would be adorable x3
Why would a companion need to have a "good reason" to not romance species X or W ? Does Sera needs a justification for being a lesbian ? Cass for being straight ? tsk.

For me at least it comes off as some racism to the LI if they go 'Yeah no I don't like your because you're a ___" I know its not intended as such but thats how it comes off to me at least and nothing can change my opinion faster on someone than finding out they are racist. I really don't get why people keep comparing people not liking the race gates to the set sexualities since they aren't the same thing. You are born with your sexuality you are not born with a dislike of another race, I find it silly to compare the two at all.
I heard Josephine (aka Scribbles) is bisexual. If so, my Qunari Champion girl will be torn between adviser Josephine, and companion Sera.
I think it's more acceptable in the DA universe because the differences between the "races" are far more significant than the differences in human "races." As in far more differently biologically and usually culturally. Not that I like it, but it's not like we're just talking about skin color here.
Cullen not being into elves would be odd since the mage he had a crush on in my game was clearly an elf.
I don't mind preferences. As long as it's not stupid like "OMG humans betrayed me and you're human so you suck too!" crapola than can GTFO and take all their crap with them. If it's just they not finding my PC sexy? Whatever I'll have PCs that more than likely share their sentiments.
Varric explicitly stated he doesn't go for human girls in DA2. Does that make him a racist?
Edit: Video.
Varric's language is 90% sarcasm and humor, so I never really took that one seriously.
It could be true, but either way it doesn't make him racist, we all have preferences. It's not like he hates humans, he's just not attracted to them (if he was being serious)

Then if I turn down a gay guy because "you're a man", does that make me a sexist ?

I'm not equaling Thedas racism to real life racism and I apologize if it came off that way but fantasy racism or not it would still turn me off to that character its a very ugly trait that is very hard to look past (at least for me that is) I'm just not sure how the race gates could be added without making the race gated LI come off as a little racist against the gated race but I'm sure(hope) we'll get good in game reasons for it.

Considering he was saying it while Hawke was flirting with Merrill and trying to help them out no. If he was saying he wouldn't date someone because they were human then yes, yes I would say that makes him have some of that Thedas racism but that isn't the context of his comment, a comment that a lot of people take very seriously for some reason.

Did you miss the part in my post where I said that equaling someone's sexuality (something they are born with) to someone coming off as racist (something you are not born with) as silly?
I think people put way more weight behind this than they should. I always figured he was joking.
Granted, it can be hard to tell with Varric. But my point is that a character being race-gated is not a sign of them being racist. They just have a sexual preference, plain and simple.
It really doesn't help that pretty much every race except Qunari look extremely humanoid.

I don't think it makes sense if you want to everyone to do no wrong or be defaulted to some heroic path. Otherwise, you should run into these prejudices from time to time. Then make it up to the player to judge it or change it or be ok with it.
I think it's possible to simply not be physically/sexually attracted to a body type without actively choosing not to be.
It's unfortunate, but not impossible.
When I hear racegating I'm thinking more along those lines. More about their body type than their culture.
Kudos to girls who are into older guys, but as a woman in my twenties, I don't really see anyone in the pool who doesn't look a bit too old for me to feel comfortable rp-ing a romance with? I know this game is rated 'mature', but I feel a bit sorry for late teens/people under thirty wanting to play a straight Lady Inquisitor.
I don't doubt that Bioware are gonna win me over with some amazing characters, but Iron Bull, Varric and Blackwall all feel old enough to be my Dad and I have to admit that feels weird.
I'l probably play this game a silly number of times/try all the options anyway. Sera looks pretty awesome.
