It's always strange to me to see people support LGB part but in the same breath condemn the T/Q part.

Let's say such romance option was trans woman. If in DA universe there is nothing to provide actual sex change, then I don't see a reason for such romance, because it would only strengthen transphobic sentiments that they are just "men in drag who want to trick you into sex".

But let's say magic to make it possible exists, and the results are even better than in real life, so the woman in question was only born in male body, but fixed it since. Your reaction would still be the same?

While writing this somehow I forgot about Shapeshifter class, which shows that such magic should be totally within the scope of 'magicality' of the game's universe.

Trans* people are people. They are not 'it'. The point would be that trans* people do exist and are among the most underrepresented and discriminated against people across the globe. I can't imagine what it must be like to know you were born in the wrong body. Like many disenfranchised groups trans* people suffer from a lack of positive representation in media. A trans* companion could be a positive, groundbreaking step for trans* people- and that's worth controversy.
As I've said above, as a group I know least about trans* people, but I would be very happy to learn more.

yeah ok you are right of course they are not "it" I didn't really pay attention to the words

But still I don't get why they should be romances in a future Dragon Age game

You are right that they are underrepresented but then there should be more transgendered characters in TV-Shows and Movies first because they

are much more mainstream (imagine a trans character in NCIS or Game Of Thrones)

It would have a much better effect than just a romance in a DA game

I've known a number of trans people over the years, I bet people would change their tune had they ever spoken at length with one.

Games are mainstream now. They may not be on the same level quite yet as shows and movies, but they are still a huge part of popular culture. One romance with a trans* character is not going to kill you.

please no that would be really strange and would make a lot of people ( including me) uncomfortable

you start hitting on a woman in the game and then suddenly she says I'm a Tranny ??

That would ruin the romance immediately

I love how Bioware offers us different options (gay and straight) But a trans romance would be too much

And if there really will be a transgendered character they should say so from the beginning and not go with your suggestion by

making it a surprise

Kind of disheartening to read this kind of comment. I hope the gaming world will grow up enough for me to see significant trans characters in the games I play during my lifetime.

Also, please don't use the word 'tranny'. That's like the n-word for trans people.

I'll agree that a well-presented strong trans* character on mainstream TV would have a more widespread impact, and is definitely something that needs to be seen- but I also think that on the journey to representation any positive representation is a stepping stone. If one form of media breaks the ice, that form of media becomes noticed, popular. Eventually it would be hoped that other games, and other types of media would follow suit. Even if early steps are small, they are progress, and with BW's portrayal of Maevaris and stated interest in equality, they could be that company to take the first step :)

Just popping in to say, Anders told me in DA2 that being together would only result in Hawke being hurt. If a character tells me that in DAI, I will believe him, and that romance won't be happening! I have pretty high hopes for Cullen and perhaps Iron Bull, on a female Qunari playthrough. (So hopefully neither one of them says anything like that!)

How awesome would it be to have a DLC where we go to Tevinter and meet up with Mae?  To have a truly transgendered character, not a love interest, not working in a brothel, but working & fighting alongside us...instead of being the 'other'.  I loved how it was completely NOT an issue in the comic.  Plus, Mae rocks!!!

I sadly know at least one person who would be highly uncomfortable with a trans person in a DA game, they would never get into detail with why they felt this way though closest I ever got to an answer from them on why they were uncomfortable with trans people was that 'they were changing themselves in ways that are wrong'

That said I hear a lot about a trans character in the comics and I would love to see a character like that in the game, I would want to be exposed to something like this which I don't know much about it would enjoyable and maybe enlightening for me. So I'm all for there being a trans character or LI in a future DA game :)

Why should BW wait for it happen in Hollywood first?  Why not be trailblazers?

because they are not exactly the most popular gaming company right now

people even complained that they announced a gay character (Dorian) just look at this video (comments and dislikes)

What do you think would happen if they announced a transgendered character?

Yeah on the trans note...please no spring it on you right before the romance scene types.

If it's someone who's upfront with it from the beginning or not an LI period? Great.

Nah. Then there'd be no reason to learn they were trans to begin with if you weren't romancing them.

Do they have a set of genitals that are an utter turnoff for you? If so, maybe that can be brought up before sex. If not, than it's none of your business until they choose to share it.

Yes, this. Trans people don't owe anyone private information about their genitals.

For those who don't get it: when you meet someone you're potentially romantically interested in, do you immediately share information about what's in your pants? Cuz, if so, that's kind of creepy.

I think that transgendered people are still very misunderstood and it scares people how little they know about them. It makes some people want to learn more, but also makes some people shut down out of fear of being insulting and others lash out in hatred. Plus, to be honest, transgenderism isn't a sexuality and the others in that category are. I know many trans people and almost all of them are in hetero relationships. I don't think many people even know that trans women can be straight, bi, lesbian, etc.

For Bioware to include a trans person as a romance as the first inclusion in the games might be a mistake. It's a shame, but I think the gaming world isn't quite ready for it. However, I'm not saying that trans people shouldn't be included and represented because they should. I just wonder if perhaps trans issues in Thedas should be explored in some way before offering a female trans (particularly) LI, as I feel she would be very poorly received and we would lose all of the rest of her story in the controversy about her romance. I'm not sure though. Maybe I'm being too cautious and not giving people enough credit.....

Either way, Mae needs to make an appearance in the next game because she's badass. (Oh, and happens to be trans too!)

I think people underestimate the additional support a company can get by being inclusive.

You may lose the business of some bigots but gain some more loyal fans.

Youtube (and the internet in general) will always provide a platform for the scummiest of people to express their gross options without consequence. I don't think we should use that as evidence to not continue trying to be as progressive and inclusive as possible.

I agree and they shouldn't announce anything just place a npc somewhere in the game who is

transgender and then we can see

You mean you're not suppose to give someone a detailed list of everything you have in your pants down to the lint in your pockets? Man no wonder people back away from me within minutes of meeting :(

But it's these very people who most need their ideas and stereotypes challenged. We don't make progress for equal rights anywhere by pandering to bigots, and BW have taken a stand by showing that they are willing to take any heat from portraying LGBTQ characters because they want to make a game that represents their demographic, and their LGBTQ fans are important to them :)
