The part that's sort of sexist is the fact that there are fewer female companions to begin with.  Few women + all women are love interests = questionable.

 

But this is the party that we have, and I still want Vivienne to be romanceable, even if that means that all the female companions are LIs. 

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to open the sexist/feminist can o' worms here in expressing my opinion - it's just that.  An opinion.  I think Vivi would make for a fantastic LI, because she is a fascinating character - one I'm still not sure I'll love or hate... And I expect I may well feel that way even after finishing the game, which is what makes the idea of pursuing a romance with her so intriguing.

 

Like I said, the feeling here is 'squicky,' not offended.  As someone said before, it may well be something that Bioware didn't even think would bother people.

Then maybe we should focus on the fact that there are twice as much male than female companions, not on trying to make situation of lesbians particularly bad in this outcome, if Vivienne is not romanceable.

 

Besides, if she's not romanceable, then the only WOC (if I get this correctly, Josephine is Antivian, which is equivalent of Spaniard, so actually she's white, just has darker skin tone) is the only woman that is not romanceable, which would be problematic as well.

 

I don't see how 2 Lis is a particularly bad outcome.

 

Though true on the latter bit. As in the problematic bit. Joseph's lighter than she should be apparently in that shot cause the lighting.

 

 

If they were all straight women, I'd feel more skeeved about it, because then it would seem that they were just objects for straight male players to acquire. But at least one of them is gay, and at least one is bisexual, and I can't be too critical of making them all (well, except for Leliana) potential LIs since I feel like I'd be punishing the lesbian players too.

 

It still bothers me. I wish it didn't but it does. I'll probably do what I did in SWTOR though. Just sigh.

I think Sera's probably the best chance for that. Once they mentioned him being torn between the two worlds I doubted that

Not trying to argue, at all, I'm absolutely inclined to agree with you!  It's just i remember the devs saying they made characters LI's because it fit their story or character, not to fit into some even ratio.  Which is why I'm so on the fence with Varric, because for story reasons, he could go either way... Personally, I'd love to see the Bianca thing resolved, one way or another, so he can find peace (regardless of the conclusion).  Whether or not the writers felt they could move from that to him being open to a new relationship is anybody's guess.  But, I could find reasons for any of the remaining potential romances to not be romances for story reasons, if I speculate enough... which is why my final grand conclusion is..... *cue suspenseful music* I have no idea!

 

Except... I want Solas.  That is all 

 

Varric needs to resolve his Bianca issues before he can think of looking somewhere else. I personally don't think he's going to be a LI in DAI at all. He is still too hung up on Bianca. He also talked about a promise in DA2, it's quite possible that it was a "wait for me" promise and that is what he is doing.

 

Also, going by all the speculation and people being mostly wrong, I'm starting to think that Iron Bull is not romanceable, but that Blackwall is.

With as much as they've teased us about Iron Bull, I would be absolutely shocked and quite a bit annoyed if he wasn't a LI.

Yes I'd like something about that as well that and something along the lines of Alistair worrying about being too tall for your liking if you're romancing him as a dwarf (I found that to be very adorable)

If your sole reason for saying that Blackwall is boisterous and uninhibited is that single piece of concept art, Sera also qualifies. 

Well, I said "female character", but I should have said "female warrior". When women are made into warrior characters, they usually fit a pretty specific personality type.

 

My impression of Blackwall is partly the picture, but I also follow the Twitter thread and they've said some things to hint to him being this way.

They still have ~90 days until the game release and romance is the highest speculation trend, you misery will continue until closer to launch.

I get that. It's okay to be bothered. I'm totally not criticizing you for it. I think it's a tough situation. Because I agree with you that it's a bit... sigh-worthy, AND I don't want to see lesbians get fewer options (if it was just straight male gamers, I'd be less worried because historically they have ALL the options. But lesbians have largely been in the same boat as gay men and even straight women). 

 

It wouldn't even be a problem if there were just one (or two) more women among our companions. :/ Then we could have 4 female LIs and still have a couple women who weren't LIs at all. 

 

 

WHAT IF. Vivienne were a lesbian? It would make it feel better for me because then it would feel less like dudes collecting ladies to sex. I know plenty of people would freak about it being unfair, but just for the sake of hypothetical argument, if all 4 women were LIs, but two of them weren't available to men at all, would that feel less squicky to you?

Maybe. I think we might end up with:

Iron Bull being a bi race gated male

Varric/Vivienne being a race gated straight or bi LI.

Solas being the bi LI that is not race gated but we will see if he becomes a LI.

As much as I want Blackwall fans to have Blackwall as a romance option I'm just not seeing it. He just seems like the mentor type of companion, but that's just me though.

I'm going to guess Iron Bull/Vivienne as the race gated LIs and Solas as the ungated. I don't think they'll do a 5/3 split with all three being male.

Well, his chest hair is still all fluff...

 

I like the edgy, dark Varric. I think that his story could lead to a great romance, even if we have to help him move on from Bianca (she is gone, everyone, we just have to accept that)

This wouldn't bother me at all, but I would be surprised at this point.

Having less options than others is not bad outcome, especially considering that we were treated like that in ME3 too (there it was the problem of the quality as well as the quantity)?

My thoughts about Blackwall too. Although he is a great candidate for a fatal-style-romance ... Wardens are not officially allowed to have kids / keep kids and he will be heading for his calling at some point.

Varric I think is btw a rock and a hard place, he's the only dwarf, there has not been a dwarf romance since DA:O, don't even remember Orghen as a romance option. As mentioned many times before, if he is a LI the some explanation on why the sudden change of heart is required and I can think of one: given that the world is ending then what has he got to loose.

Still holding a candle for Vivienne.

I think people should make the difference between teasing the character personality and teasing what is going to happen in the game.

 

Cullen and Cassandra were revealed in panic mode at PAX after Cullen's voice actor let it slip he was a LI. They were not teased (not even their orientation). Same thing for Sera and Dorian and Josephine.

 

Yet, they would be teasing the Iron Bull has a LI for a few months? Why doing that with him and not the others?
