I understand seeing it from that perspective but I don't think the writers intended it that way, especially since several of them are women. I don't think they are trying to objectify their own gender, I think they are trying to make people happy by giving them more options. That said it would be cool to have more female companions, but I am used to most party members being male in rpgs since Baldur's Gate days so it doesn't bother me so much.

I'm sure the gender balance is completely unintentional, though I think our parties in DA were always gender unbalanced? It's more that we have a lot of LIs this time around.

In DA:O, character-wise we had (Men): Alistair, Zevran, Sten, Oghren; and (Women): Leliana, Morrigan and Wynne. I think it's safe to say that we shouldn't count Dog and Shale (because Shale doesn't really have a gender identity, despite having been a woman originally).

In DA:2, character-wise we had (Men): Varric, Anders, Fenris and Sebastian; and (Women): Aveline, Isabella, and Merrill. We also had either Carver/Bethany depending on class, so the gender was either balanced if you were playing a Warrior/Rogue and had the DLC.

DA:I seems to be following a pattern, sad as it is to say.

As if people have actually been suggesting Josephine is a transsexual, is this how desperate the thread has gone. Jo' is a woman, anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get off whatever med's they're taking.

Biological gender is not the same thing as gender identity. Josephine is whatever she identifies as being.

Josephine would still be a woman if she was a transwoman.

I'm out of likes (never thought I'd type that), so consider this a like by proxy. :P

Maybe in the next game there will be a more balanced representation of male and female party members if the devs take feedback.

I agree. I think the writers are just trying to write up great characters and give options. Besides it's not like we have to romance them. We can be just friends with them. I'm sure there is more to all of the companions than their romances. It's an optional thing. People are free to romance whatever character if it is available to them or be friends with them and just focus on exploring other aspects of their character such as who they are, where they came from, etc.

@Mort - Yeah, Solas has been a really interesting case like you said. Over in the Solas thread, every single week we thought we'd get more information since like you said, he was in a BUNCH of magazine photos. We got his name super early too! But it was like a rollercoaster, because every single week it the information never came  When Vivienne was shown for that "monthly follower" thing we were all SUPER CERTAIN he was going to be next. How very, very wrong we all were

I'm so thrilled he ended up sounding like a very interesting character, because what a gigantic letdown that would have been after that wait. I'm also really glad more people are looking forward to him! It was kind of daunting for awhile dealing with the "lololol look there's Nick Cage!!1" "he's so ugly, why doesn't he have hair, ick!" but having basically no retort since we didn't know how he actually was as a character. But most of the characters have had to deal with appearance complaints too so I can't complain about it too much.

His fanbase is a pretty amazing and warm bunch of people though (as I'm sure you've seen, you're a part of it!) and I'm really glad that if he's a LI he'll be bi! Everyone should be able to have a chance with him  :D If he's not an option, we've got ourselves a really interesting companion at the very least. Prayer circle

The question to me is not "are people looking for love," but "which people will turn down all romantic advances from all possible PCs?" Varric and Aveline were both taken in some way. Wynne was uninterested presumably due to age in some capacity, Sten doesn't romance people conventionally, and Oghren had someone else he was interested in. It seems probable that later LIs would be like this as well; in what manners would you prefer?

Fair enough, though I think the fact that we might have race and gender gating matters, since even if Viv is romanceable, no one PC will have every female NPC available as an LI, male or female.

Noted. However, there's been no pattern in DA about men being somehow uninterested in love in favor of so-called "higher matters;" only Sten is uninterested in romance altogether, and he's mirrored by Wynne.

The only pattern it is following is that BioWare writers have been incapable of designing more then 3 full base game female companions each and every games (and that since they moved away from isometrics).

Josephine was born a woman, I think that's pretty obvious. Moving swiftly one however....

I personally think the remaining romances will be Solas, Blackwall and perhaps Dagna with IB being someone up for a non-committal relationship. I'd also think Solas and Dagna will be race-gated allowing things to go -

For Males

Cassandra

Josephine

Dagna (some race-gating involved)

Dorian

Blackwall

Solas (humans and elves)

IB (non-full romance)

For Females

Cullen

Blackwall

Solas (humans and elves)

Sera

Josephine

Dagna (some race-gating involved)

IB (non-full romance)

This allows 3 characters of each gender for both male and female Inquisitors plus clever choice between romancing Templar supporters and Mage supporters.

It wont be Dagna. They said the 8 romances are inside the companions and advisors.

I don't care so much about all the women being available. I just don't want them to be portrayed badly as if they are only there to romance dudes. So as long as bioware writes them well this shouldn't be an issue.

Pretty sure they said 7 romances will be between companions and advisers plus one outside them.

That was jossed. It was a misinterpretation. All eight are in the party.

No Dagna (though she might be able to flirt?)

No, it's 8 companion/adviser romance and one person to flirt with outside of that.

I often wonder if they just need more female writers.

No, they confirmed later that the extra was just a flirt option. It's all 8 in the companions and advisors.

Awesome, well just switch my list with Vivienne instead of Dagna then and we have our 8.

I'm not really even sure it's that. The companion interviews were pretty split on writer genders.

They've rarely had more than 3 or 4 of either gender be full options. Except in ME2, which if memory serves was 7 women and 6 men, with one robot.

That was retracted. They meant you could flirt with people outside the party.

lol okay maybe just better writers? To be honest I generally like their archetypes for characters, but sometimes I feel like they run into making the same characters I kind of expect Iron Bull to be like Isabela.

I'd like Varric but I don't think he'll make it, instead he'll probably be portrayed as your best buddy again who'll begin to open up more about 'Bianca' .

Only WAAAY bigger

I think they are just trying to make a natural group of characters, and didn't worry about what sex breakdown they had until after they had the character options. David Gaider wrote about it a while ago, but I don't have the link handy
