I'd like Varric but I don't think he'll make it, instead he'll probably be portrayed as your best buddy again who'll begin to open up more about 'Bianca' .

You should come visit the BSN Varric forum. We have lots of theories about whether or not he will be a LI... I still say that the remaining LI all have equal chance (reasons for and not for them equal)

Only WAAAY bigger

I think they are just trying to make a natural group of characters, and didn't worry about what sex breakdown they had until after they had the character options. David Gaider wrote about it a while ago, but I don't have the link handy

Yeah, I think so too. It is easy as a writer to forget about things like that if you are just trying to get a core group setup. I only wish they'd try to make some different characters instead of feeling like some characters are on repeat, but maybe they'll prove me wrong once I am in game.

I actually hope that Varric isn't our best buddy again.  We've already seen that from him.  I'd rather see Varric have a more dynamic relationship instead of just our "bro".

Josephine was born a woman, I think that's pretty obvious. Moving swiftly one however....

I personally think the remaining romances will be Solas, Blackwall and perhaps Dagna with IB being someone up for a non-committal relationship. I'd also think Solas and Dagna will be race-gated allowing things to go -

For Males

Cassandra

Vivienne (some race-gating involved)

Josephine

Dorian

Blackwall

Solas (humans and elves)

IB (non-full romance)

For Females

Cullen

Blackwall

Solas (humans and elves)

Vivienne (some race-gating involved)

Sera

Josephine

IB (non-full romance)

This allows 3 characters of each gender for both male and female Inquisitors plus clever choice between romancing Templar supporters and Mage supporters.

OK, this is what I'm sticking with, although I wouldn't say Varric is 'impossible'. If I had to switch him though I'd swap him with Solas for females only but still with some form of race-gating.

They've rarely had more than 3 or 4 of either gender be full options. Except in ME2, which if memory serves was 7 women and 6 men, with one robot.

I wasn't talking about gender disparity, but if you want to talk about that:

Jade Empire: 3 women (+ one girl child that turn into a male demon/spirit, you don't talk to the kid)/ 6 males (+1 demon/spirit)

Kotor: 3 women / 4 males + 2 robots (one with a male voice)

SWTOR: 1/2 females depending on class with 3/4 males companions

ME1: 3 women / 3 males

ME2: 3 female (4 if you count Morinth which I don't really consider a follower, Tali was designed in ME1) / 4 males + 1 male robot (Garrus was designed in ME1)

ME3: it has a single new full base game follower designed: Jame Vegas

DAO: 3 females/5 males + 1 male dog

DA2: 1 females (Bethany is only available in act 1+ending, Merril/Isabela were in DAO)/ 2 males (Carver only available in act 1+ending, Anders was in DAA)

DAI: 3 females (2 if we don't count Cassandra)/5 males (or 4 if you don't want to count Cole has a male, Varric was in DA2)

edit:
Fixed Garrus and Varric

edit 2:

Changed DA2 once I remembered who was in DAO, DAA...*sigh*

lol okay maybe just better writers? To be honest I generally like their archetypes for characters, but sometimes I feel like they run into making the same characters I kind of expect Iron Bull to be like Isabela.

Well, looking at the interviews it breaks down like this;

Josephine - Sylvia Feketekuty
Cullen - Brianne Battye
Leliana - Sheryl Chee
Blackwall - Sheryl Chee
Dorian - David Gaider
Cassandra - David Gaider
Solas - Patrick Weekes
Cole - Patrick Weekes
Iron Bull - Patrick Weekes
Varric - Mary Kirby
Vivienne - Mary Kirby
Sera - Luke Kristjanson

Female Written - 6
Female Writers - 4

Male Written - 6
Male Writers - 3

So, it doesn't seem like a lack of female writers. Maybe they just need to be conscious of the gender distribution early on. Just look at the concepts they have and ask themselves why the majority are male and if they could easily be switched to a female character with the same attributes otherwise. Because, honestly, I think the answer is almost always that changing their gender wouldn't be any substantial change to their character. Especially considering the way men and women are presented as quite equal in Thedas.

Thanks for that very informative! I do agree. I don't believe gender plays a huge part or role of a character.

I did a thing, and I'm probably completely wrong/mostly wishful thinking, but here's my guess until we get more information:

Josie (Bi), Cullen (S), Cassandra (S), Sera (L), Dorian (G) - Confirmed.

Varric (Bi) - No Qunari. IB (Bi) - No Dwarves. Viv/Solas (Bi).

Straight F Elf/Human/Dwarf - 2 (Cullen and Varric)

Straight F Qunari - 2 (Bull and Cullen)

Gay F Elf/Human/Dwarf/Qun - 2 (Sera and Josie)

Straight M Elf/Human/Dwarf/Qunari - 2 (Cass and Josie)

Gay M Elf/Human/Dwarf - 2 (Dorian and Varric)

Gay M Qunari - 2  (Dorian and Bull)

Then bisexual Vivienne or Solas would make some of those twos into threes.

Despite my blatant assumptions that Varric and IB are bi and other obvious flaws, this would keep things pretty much even and explain the race-gatedness, and also perhaps give hope to people who desperately want to romance Varric. *Shrug* ... and now I wait for new info.

agreed, been there, done that. Granted, I'll take it if its the only option (or an antagonist if I want to make him hate me)

Some of these guesses on who are the gated romance options are really making me wonder how far the race gating will actually go. Will it just restrict one race? or Will it restrict more than one? I wonder.

I wasn't talking about gender disparity...

It seemed like your point was "There's a maximum to how many women Bioware can write lately", and I was saying that they've been keeping the party count down since the Baldur's Gate days, so I don't really see what, if any issue there is.

And you have an odd way of numbering who counts as a written female character in a game. Why aren't women from the previous entry included?

I'm expecting race distribution to not be equal. I feel like Gaider's post basically nailed that in. I don't really know any other way to take it. So, I doubt all races will have the same amount of options.

Do you mean how many will be gated? Because they said two. But if you mean how many options will be shaved off, that we have no idea. I'm wondering about that, also.

Which is a shame, but so long as my Qunari Inquisitor (who will absolutely be my first character) can pick between Cassandra or Dorian, I'm cool with it. And since we can't know unless they show us a chart, they should show us the chart!  :pinched:

I mean "how many options will be shaved off." It just seems to me like there really is not anything pointing towards any potential race gated romance option blocking off all but one race except maybe Varric. Don't ask me why but I just think that if Varric is made a LI he will probably be only available to dwarves.

I'm expecting dwarves and qunari to be race gated with the LIs that have them unfortunately I think both LIs will have the dwarf or qunari race gate :crying:

Pardon me while I throw a childish fit elsewhere until my sadness subsides :crying:

Unless it's Varric. It would make no sense for Varric to have a no dwarf gate.

I believe Varric specifically states in the third act that he doesn't have a thing for humans? He might well be gated for dwarves only. That'd be interesting.

There's definitely a joke there. I'm not sure where it is exactly, but it's definitely there.

Thats why I have the 'or qunari' in there (though I'm still iffy on Varric being an LI I just don't see it happening)

Though that makes me wonder if we take the obvious choices for race gates off the table (Varric and Iron Bull) Who does everyone think will be the race gated LIs?

I just will be really surprised right now if Varric is the LI. I think Iron Bull will be gated from dwarves and maybe elves. Vivienne could be human only, but I could see them giving a reason for another race to get through. Dwarves have a good standing topside, maybe they'll be allowed. Or maybe she just has a secret thing for Qunari. Those hats, man.
