I'm sorry, but what does the current discussion (about transsexuality) have to do with romance in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

Wouldn't this discussion be better as a general "transsexuality in BioWare games" thread in the Lobby?

It's a well discussed topic to be fair.

A LI reveal or a VA reveal would be nice anytime soon.

People are discussing ways to turn down a potential transgendered romance.  Seems perfectly on topic to me (if extremely specific).

Don't see how it's different from turning down anyone else's romance offer. Just use normal polite ways?

I'm kind of weary of everyone, personally. I don't get too involved until I get to know anyone anyways.

That's my 2c.

To the first question; that depends on whether or not there will be a trans worker in Inquisition's brothel, I suppose. Beyond that it started during a discussion on representation when someone pointed out that there's a T in LGBT and went from there.

As for the second, the last thread specifically dealing with the trans topic(that I'm aware of) got closed in less than thirty pages.

Man all this talk makes my head spin, really wish i wasn't living in the backwoods so I could understand most of this and actually contribute in a meaningful way (even though I wasn't doing that before either when I could chime in) ;n; (also don't want to make myself sound even dimmer by asking more questions)

I'm not transgendered, so I'm certainly not an expert on transgenderism, but I did volunteer for a few years at the NYC Gay & Lesbian Community Center and have a few friends who are trans.  If you want to ask questions, but are not comfortable asking the general thread, feel free to PM me and I'll discuss it with you (to my best ability) on the side.

Hopefully one of these or both soon.

Forgive me, but I'm disinclined to think well of those who consider my existence invalid, even if their god said so.

Ooh, now we're heating up.

By actually having a conversation about why the PC might have issues with it and allowing them to actually discuss the issue and perhaps move beyond it.

Yes.

Okay, that I can more or less agree on. I don't think you have anything to worry about anyway because most rejections in Bioware games never get into details.  I would be fine with a vague response in which I can imagine my character thinking whatever.  Vague is usually best.  I don't want any response that puts words in my characters mouth (either approving or disapproving of transexuality).

Ahh, so it comes down to belief that trans women are not women and trans men - men.

It's not really correct even from biological POV, since there are many studies showing biological difference in brain structures of trans people, just like with gay people. And hormone therapy only further changes biology.

In the end, attraction, especially the immediate, clearly sexual kind, based on visual and other senses' clues, depends on sex characteristics. And all mammalian secondary sex characteristics are hormone dependent, even genitals (which belong to primary sex characteristics, though they are set during prenatal period of development).

I would disagree, mind and body are two seperate things. Would you belive a therian was a non human biology just because thier mind was non human?

Brain structure does not = your biolgoical sex. Am sure thier is a complexity to the whole, but am talking about male female and intersex. Every human is born within one of these 3 sex's that occur by naturaly

No one is declaring your existance invalid.
People are revolting against your attempt to make others feel guilty for what they feel; in this case not being confortable enough with transexuals to have sex with them.

You are the one sounding like those religious zealots right now.

There can be multiple discussions happening in this thread at the same time.  If you aren't interested in talking about transgendered LI's in DA games, you can still talk about other things and people will respond to you.

Fair enough, but there just seems to be alot of off-topic discussion about the real-world implications and such of transsexuality.

We are not. I used a gender-neutral term because transexuals can be both men and women.

Have you never heard expecting parents refer to their baby as "it" before it has grown enough for gender to be distinguishable?

Ah, yes. And I just described Vivienne as "colored" because dark brown is a color, and also there's no such thing as historical context and common sense-appropriate word usage.

Yes.

Then don't you think it would be much more likely that both parties involved would get hurt if one of them swallowed their discomfort at the other party being a transsexual?

Is breaking up a perfect solution? No. But it's likely to be the best solution in that situation.

Now you're just looking for a fight.

His/her. Will that satisfy you? Or will you now accuse me of using both terms because I can't decide which one applies to a transexual?

Quite probably, though I think the best solution of all would be the one working past their discomfort.

But "eww, dude is really a lady (or vice versa)" is an reaction coming from ignorance and transphobia. From what I've read, murderers of trans women use such panic defense all the time.

Yes, because saying "eww, dude is really a lady (or vice versa)" is being a jerk. Still, the process of changing one's physical sex to the other can discourage some people to pursue a romance, they can always say "sorry but that's not going to work" ;)

(Speaking of panic, I heard gay panic was a thing in some law books, just wow )

Pretty much this. Like I said, no one should be forced to romance anyone and no one ever insisted on that, but from what I see in some people's posts, they don't want to see anything that could question their views, or make them feel bad for having them. And the purpose of such character would be exactly that - besides of providing visibility to another mistreated minority - challenging damaging sentiments about that group.

An inevitable divergence once the initial topic was broached, just like discussions on race gating romances quickly go real world implications of racism.

"It" is a dehumanizing term, because it's typically used to refer to objects. Whether your intention was good or bad, basically no one wants to have someone refer to them as "it", particularly when there are very real and serious prejudices directed toward a group.

I'm hopeful that you didn't mean anything offensive by your choice of words, but it was.....unfortunate, regardless.  It's pretty much not acceptable to call any person "it", let alone a person who is transgendered.  It doesn't have to be a big deal, but perhaps, people could be more careful with their choice of words around sensitive topics like this.  It's been a pretty respectful conversation so far.

Just use his or her and delete whichever is inapplicable to the individual in question, just like everyone else. It's not hard.

I hoped that such character, if written good, would provoke the player to ask themselves a question, why exactly it discourages them.
