To be fair, I have known a few trans-individuals who've prefered "it" to he or she, though I wouldn't call it a widespread preference.

This is true, but until that preference is established, I think "they" would be a much more respectful pronoun to default to if the aim is to be gender-neutral.

I'm hopeful that you didn't mean anything offensive by your choice of words, but it was.....unfortunate, regardless. It's pretty much not acceptable to call any person "it", let alone a person who is transgendered. It doesn't have to be a big deal, but perhaps, people could be more careful with their choice of words around sensitive topics like this. It's been a pretty respectful conversation so far.
As I said before, I used a gender neutral term because transexuals can be both men and women and to avoid repeating him/her.
Parents use it to refer to their children before their gender is known; no offense was meant.

Er, "him/her" would never have been necessary. If you're dealing with someone genderqueer, "hir" or "xir" can both work; otherwise, it's just one of "her" or "him."

I hoped that such character, if written good, would provoke the player to ask themselves a question, why exactly it discourages them.
You can ask yourself a question without having to pursue a romance, a frienship path for instance would have great potential. I'not advocating the option for the player to harass a trans NPC, but just reject a romance. Discomfort is not all black or all white, you can totally be ok around a trans and yet not wanting to have sex with them.

Hmmm, tell me more about this hat eating? It seems like a good topic for the thread at this moment... I personally will not eat a hat if Varric isn't a romance, but I still love him... perhaps I will eat something else

Why?
His VA was announced at GaymerX, and DG and other members from BW's staff are doing romance panels while they are there. So that's where the assumption is coming from is my best guess.

Right, but now you know that "it" can be considered offensive in this context, so it might be better to spend the additional 1.5 seconds to type him/her to avoid offending people. Thanks in advance.

I don't think you'll have to do that the last two games had male elf LIs I think this one will have one to. Also who is Gareth David-Lloyd?

I personally dislike using the singular "they" just because it's bad grammar. Usually I'll default to the gender neutral "he" (yes it is a thing) when I'm trying not to denote a specific gender, but that's just me. Regardless, this really is more of a grammar debate than a romance debate ![]()

Here's what offended you so:
"If someone feels unconfortable with dating a transexual then they have as much right to feel that as the trans had to change its sex."
Evidently, the hypothetical trans I'm speaking of can be of either gender and in order to refer to him/her, I evidenly need to either use "his/her" or a neutral term which was what I used.
This is not an "illegitimate belief", it's grammar.
Actually, the accepted English standard is "their" for gender-neutral terms involving people. It manages to avoid being a slur, and all.

I would disagree, mind and body are two seperate things. Would you belive a therian was a non human biology just because thier mind was non human?
Brain structure does not = your biolgoical sex. Am sure thier is a complexity to the whole, but am talking about male female and intersex. Every human is born within one of these 3 sex's that occur by naturaly
Intersex conditions are actually perfect example to show that gender identity is yet another biological sex trait. Pople with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (meaning that they have XY chromosomes, like most men, but they are completely immune to "male" hormones, androgens, like testosterone, so their body develops as female) always identify as women. Meanwhile, with Partial Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, it's much more diversified, and connected to the level of the insensitivity (so, newborn who's 5 on Quigley Scale which assesses feminization of genitals and level of androgen insensitivity generally has much bigger chance to develop female gender identity, but it's always very possible that they'll identify as a man, while sixes, meaning those with CAIS, identify as women).

Well, only until people make it a slur. There is nothing inherently wrong with the word "it" until people use their own imagination to give it a connotation.
