First, off, regarding the first post in the thread, that bit of insight into game development was super interesting... and make sense. Seems to me, what he's saying is that these race-gated romances were the ones added in later - and the choice was between having said romance but limiting who they can make them for, or not adding them at all. Personally, I prefer them to be included. And if it means having to play as a different race/gender than I'd initially planned to be able to experience it, then so be it. I mean, I planned on re-playing the game a few times anyway.
Also, I can't help but point out that, for me personally, I like that there are restrictions to who the characters will be interested in (even if it is just an accidental side effect to technical or time limitations). I realize that games aren't real life... but in real life you don't walk into a room full of strangers and go "Hey, that guys looks awesome! He will be my boyfriend!" I mean, I can try to make it so but, realistically it might not happen. I mean, he could be gay. He could be really not into brunettes. He could be taken, or just not into me, whatever. Or I get to know him and don't even like him. Well, okay, but there's this other guy who I may not have initially thought I'd be into, but he has a really cool personality and interesting life story, whatever, so I pursue something with him instead. At least, that's how I typically play a game where romances are a thing.
I remember playing the Mass Effect trilogy, and was so sure I'd go for Kaidan. But in fact, I found him boring and the whole Horizon thing soured me on him even more, but that cricket/dinosaur looking guy who's prospect as a romance I'd initially laughed at was seriously growing on me

Erm, that turned out waaayy longer than I meant it to... Sorry
