I honestly envy you (in a "happy for all of you, though" way ), because I also wanted a qunari LI since Sten, but IB doesn't really do it for me   I hope he'll grow on me once I play the game

Yup. It could be Cullen, Dorian, or the 4th male LI.

Josephine is the only one we know for certain, but it would be strange to gate the straight or gay and lesbian options by race AND gender. I mean, it's possible that Cassandra might not be into Qunari, or Cullen into dwarves, but I feel like they would have said something about that before now, just to prevent total chaos. 

Don't get me wrong - I agree with this logic entirely. I'm just saying that we didn't have confirmation that Cass, Cullen, Sera and Dorian are not race-gated.

I was sure he'd be a LI, but the fact that he's ungated is genuinely surprising to me. Who could the gated love interests be...?   

Anyway, now we've got official confirmed:

They apparently just mentioned the issues around open romances (i.e. being able to romance more than one person), but said that scripting made it difficult.  Lady Insanity went on to try to explain the next part (something about it being more likely if those characters were already in a relationship with each other), but it wasn't clear and she's going to clarify later. 

 

I'm reading it as:  no open relationships anytime soon, unless there were a Jaheira and Khalid type couple who you could romance both. 

 

Of course, none of this will probably relate to DA: I.  Just an interesting comment that she mentioned.

Almost 100% it's going to be Varric.  Solas is described as "open-minded," so why would he be race-gated?

I don't think the straight or homosexual characters would be race-gated.  It would be a bisexual male and a bisexual female.

 

The only male who fits the description of "likely to be race gated" is Varric.

 

And that's... disappointing, to me.  I've got nothing against Varric, but I rarely play dwarves, have zero interest in Iron Bull (Alpha Male? Promiscuous?  James Bond type?  That's totally not my thing--not that I won't have him in my party for kicks, but romance is out of the question), usually play mages (so no Cullen)... And the most disappointing thing is that Cullen and Varric are both returning characters.  I'd prefer to have had someone new.
