That's not the point. The point is that I don't want anyone to be racist in the party at all.

Do we know yet if he was going to be one of the 2 race gated ones or if he was a 3rd one and they brought it down to 2?

 

There are still 2 race gated romances, but we have no idea who, only that Josie and the Bull aren't one of them.

It seems it's going to be the third one, because there' still two more. Wich is wierd, because we assume there were 6 and they added two more because of the extra time and included the race-gating to make it viable. Now it seems there were 5 and they added 3?

 

 

Thanks! Darn. I was hoping he was one of the 2 cylons... I mean race gated... romances. Because that would leave 1 more and make me feel like the best evidence was for Varric. Pondering will continue, I guess.

Is Varric less racist for just not liking them for height reasons? I mean, if Iron Bull can make it work, Varric also surely could have.

It's during the Merrill romance.  At one point, in front of Merrill, you can flirt with Varric.  He'll tell Hawke that he's not into humans.  I didn't know about it myself until a few months ago.

So.. Gating theories;

 

Cassandra - Maybe has a drive to breed and continue her family name? Seems unlikely, since she joined the Seekers. Can't think of anything else.

Cullen - He's been pretty racist against Qunari and Dwarves in the past. Might not like a Dalish elf because they're not Andrastrian. Mage elf was.

Sera - Maybe doesn't like humans because of how they treat elves? Probably not, no other ideas.

Dorian - Tevinter has a lot of issues with Qunari and looks down on elves. Not sure if this will apply to him.

Vivienne - Could be gated to avoid scandal, although anything besides humans seems scandalous and that seems excessively restrictive.

Solas - Could have an issue with dwarves, since they have little connection to the fade.

Blackwall - No idea, nothing in his background implies gating, but we don't know much.

Varric - Has trauma issues with Qunari (and cinematic issues) and has said he's not into humans, in questionably serious context.

 

I'm not comfortable with any one the reasons for gating, saying it's because of trauma or social prejudice is like saying a lesbian is gay because she's been assaulted by men, or that a woman is straight because she grew up in a homophobic family....YIKES

Yeah, I'm really having a hard time figuring out the "story reason" for race-gating for anyone. To me, story reason implies something other than 'Sorry I'm not into (insert race here).  

 

If it is "sorry, I'm not into (insert race here)" then things look way too good for Varric at this point.  I have several issues with it being Varric.

That's not the point. The point is that I don't want anyone to be racist in the party at all.

 

It will most likely be a companion, most of whom are optional (you can outright exclude from joining your particular Inquisition).

The morphological differences are significant enough that I can accept that there might be wholly physical reasons for it. It's less believable for the others, and would be somewhat randomly applied regardless.

If there's a race gated option that's race gated TO dwarves I'll laugh a bit, a lot of people predicted they'd be the ones most left out by race gating.

I pretty much disagree about a person being racist for not being physically attracted to other races alone, but height difference is a very common reason for not being physically attracted to someone.  It's kinda the thing where while a companion can't actually tell what physical features of your face make you attractive, the different races will almost always be much taller than he is.

I kind of wonder what the other gates are that they prioritized taking Iron Bull's gate off and not theirs. I mean, that strongly suggests they feel the story reason was more important with them, right? That's interesting, but I can't imagine what it would be.

 

I have trouble to believe this, because I can't help to think that the race-gating an the correlated "story reasons" were put there ad-hoc, more as an excuse than anything else. So, basically, I tend to think of any story-reason as something that didn't really need to be there. 

 

I think I might believe it if was more along the lines of the"story-reason" for IB being the less believable...

 

I know almost nothign about it, so I'm probably very wrong  but that's how I picture it
