I pretty much disagree about a person being racist for not being physically attracted to other races alone, but height difference is a very common reason for not being physically attracted to someone.  It's kinda the thing where while a companion can't actually tell what physical features of your face make you attractive, the different races will almost always be much taller than he is.

I think the issue is "story reasons." That implies there's more of a reason to it than just lack of physical attraction.

Since when does 'not being attracted to someone' = 'racist'?

How so?

Because I highly doubt they would make Varric Bisexual. Having him straight would screw up the equal numbers.

That's my biggest issue. Also, I would just perfer Blackwall or Solas.

I'm not comfortable with any one the reasons for gating, saying it's because of trauma or social prejudice is like saying a lesbian is gay because she's been assaulted by men, or that a woman is straight because she grew up in a homophobic family....YIKES

Why can't it be just preferences ?

I'm guessing because they said "for story reasons". I wouldn't care if, like, Cullen just said, "sorry, I'm not attracted to Qunari chicks." But a lot of people would complain they were shallow. Not that anything I can think of is better?

If any of the companions are racists, they would not join our inquisition if we are an especific race to start. So no, I wouldn't call them racists.

How about they are simply not attracted to other races?

Nonsense :P

But Bioware never said anything about being fair towards player races

True but what are the reasons behind race gating that we know? Story reasons and animation, IB was going to be race gated cause it was going to be to hard to animate him with all the different races but that has been fixed so now we can only figure that the 2 race gated LI's are for story purposes. Sera is an elf she along with humans would be the easiest to animate in love scenes and the like. We don't know Sera's take on humans, but from what has been said about her she isn't a serious individual unless she needs to be or that's what I have gotten from her so I really don't see her being the typical elf and having a dislike for humans so that is why I see her being available to every race or at the least humans and elves.

Only race gating I could see make sense

Cassandra- she may just be into human men, she actually comes across that way to me at least.

Vivienne- I could see her being human only, seems to fit with her character and stance.

Varric- If he is a love interest I only see him being interested in female dwarfs.

Velanna was racist; actually racist as in "I'll kill every human I see" rather than "I'm sorry but I just don't feel attracted to other races" "racist"; and she can join the Grey Wardens under a human Commander,

We haven't seen anything to suggest he can't be bi. All we know is that he had a relationship with a woman and won't be gay.

....I do admit the idea we can now romance a qunari is making me mentally picture what hybrids would look like. I mean I know we're not going to get to have kids but now I'm curious.

Cullen could work also since he isn't too fond Dwarves and Qunari, maybe even Dalish (but that might get a pass)

Sera I wouldn't think is race-gated but it could happen, same with Dorian

To be honest, no, it's just a giant can of unfortunate implications, that involves generalization and prejudice. Like I said, apply those reasonings to IRL minorities and it's a MAJOR source of discomfort.

I always understood "story reasons" as "non-technical reasons"; I consider characterization as being part of "the story".

Yeah, that's what catches me. If it's just basic attraction, I wouldn't think they'd have worded it how they did?

So we have 6 now ...two more so I will assume

Vivenne and Blackwall, both gated, both bisexual.

Viv-no elves or dwarves
Blackwall-no Qunari

I think Blackwall will be a romance to be the more tragic one. If you don't make certain choices, he reaches the end of his taint and you go to the deep roads with him and fight until he dies. Or make good choices and he can cure his taint somehow. ( this Is why I assume him)

Viv is a female (this is why I assume her.)

Personally I am straight male, so my first inquisitor will be a straight male, so I only have Cassandra (who I don't like romantically based off her movie), Josephine (who may hate me because I will most likely agree with Cullen most, followed by Leliana), and Viv (who may not join me since I am anti circle, and can't trust her based off her title of the ambition)

Maybe there is a "valid" story reasoning behind the individual's outlook on certain races in relation to romance/love - whatever.  Not necessarily their race in general.

If they make any two of the monosexual LIs (Cassandra, Sera, Dorian, and Cullen) race-gated, there's going to be tons of angry people.

Just let my elf have Cassandra, BioWare!  :crying:

People keep saying the word racist, and I keep reading it in John Cleese's faux French accent.

I still think that Vivienne not wanting to enter a romance wich might harm her status it's not racist per se. Cold and other things, maybe, but not racist. And I could imagine other stories where something like this could apply, though the truth it's they doesn't seem to be applicable to any of our companions, consiering what we know about them so far. I know I'm not convincing anyone, but, well, just saying  :P

Can we not do this. Like can we stop this right here. Confirmed Bull! Romances! Happy logical discussion! Woo!

Agreed.  I don't think that line of discussion's gonna go anywhere productive.
