I always understood "story reasons" as "non-technical reasons"; I consider characterization as being part of "the story".

I just wonder why IB was such a priority over the others to leave ungated. I guess they just really wanted his pansexuality to be characterized and the gated ones are not so much.

I do not know how to feel about Vivienne: She has a hidden agenda and since BW told us, some companions would be too busy for a romance, maybe they meant her?

Seems like my beloved Warden McTaint isn't a romance. We already have two male human LI *sigh*

I still think that Vivienne not wanting to enter a romance with might harm her status it's not racist per se. Cold and other things, maybe, but not racist. And I could imagine other stories where something like this could apply, though the truth it's they doesn't seem to be applicable to any of our companions, consiering what we know about them so far. I know I'm not convincing anyone, but, well, just saying

There is nothing wrong with not being attracted to people for things like that though. I know a white guy who isn't attracted to white girls. (Not me personally , but I don't think it's racist), simply because he doesn't think white girls are attractive. (I use him as an example instead of making another hypothetical scenario because hypothetical scenarios tend to get me in trouble here, and people are less offended if people say white all the time.)

Perhaps all the stood in the Bull's way was the technical limitations. For the others, there is an actual, firm reason that can't just be worked on super-hard to make go away.

yes, someone pointed that to me a few days ago, and it's true, that could be a hole in the status argument, I admit it. I think she could still want to play safe, but obviously, that's not just as convincing

Her status is more based on the Orlesian court and its nobles...which aren't exactly a prime example of tolerance on relationships between humans and non-human, at least on public.

"Story reasons" could be literally anything, including "I'm just not attracted to *insert race here*".  It is way WAY too ambiguous to be throwing around 'racism' at this stage.

If she's that concerned about what these nobles think, how will she be useful when we may need to make some hard decisions about them? Why should she be kept in the Inquisition at all?

Alistair is perfectly willing to be with an elf or dwarf at the end if he's not King. There's a difference between not being interested in people due to their race and realizing if you're king you have a very limited amount of people you would be allowed to marry without causing riots.

 

 

 

As for Viv being race gated because of her ambition, I can see that. Even if the inquisitor is powerful that doesn't mean people would approve of an interspecies relationship for Viv.
