I don't know why men have far fewer alternative-race LI's but I hope it's for a nicer reason than 'men are shallow'
I hate that stereotype with a passion, to me I don't care how pretty a girl is if she has an unattractive personality then she isn't for me, looks can fade but a persnality you love remains forever.

That's true. I followed for a while a thread in the ME forum where an inmense majority of the straight guys were saying they only wanted human LIs, except for asaris, but well, that's really just the same... Then again, elves are mostly humans with pointy ears... I don't know
It would be nice if they did branch out a bit, but I get that they need to sell games and they're doing a lot for representation already. Also, as far as women in video games go, Aveline and Cassandra are fairly unconventional. Baby steps?

The inherent implications of this are that straight men are considered to be more shallow than other orientations, if it's a case of 'safety' and fitting beauty stereotypes. I don't know if I'm comfortable with that as an explanation, because whilst there have certainly been a number of vocal males that have complained, there are probably a large amount who would be interested in a nontraditional LI.

I would have liked to think that it was not just like that too, that's why I followed that particular ME forum thread, and in the end, I got quite dissapointed because for most straight guys, it was just like that: the LI has to be physically attractive and that implies being a human (or a blue human). I mean there are lots of guy who re not like that of course, but at least in that thread, believe me, it was an overwhelming majority

I'd be really interested to see that. It's part of why playing as a qunari appeals to me because there seems to be so much opportunity to create a strong fierce protagonist. Why people think LI's have to be pretty to be attractive and interesting is beyond me. There's so much more to people than that

It's not just men. Society grooms everyone to think males can fill more varied roles than women.

Unconventional or not, Aveline and Cassandra don't have an eye missing and no hair and deep scars all over. Their facial features pretty much fit in the theorized ideal proportion range (all the women's faces shown in this game so far do). I would take a male version of them any day.

I'm all for unique LIs, but my threshold is practical. I don't understand Turian romance, for example. Seems like it would chafe.
I would have happily romanced Sigrun if given the chance.

I hope in the next Dragon Age we get a female Qunari to romance, now that would be awesome.

No, it's definitely not the same, but beauty standard don't allow for women like Iron Bull unless they're clearly defined as not sexual. (Shale in DA:O, Lily in Fallout) Even then, it's rare, to say the least.

Unlikely. See Gaiders fetish comments, regarding the issue.

Oh, I agree with you, and it's infuriating, but I also think that the majority of people are attracted to something other than just good looks in their significant others. There aren't enough models in the world for that to be the case

and I think that if a non-traditional LI was presented well enough a lot of people would be willing to branch out and explore. I am a bit of an optimist though
Well, I definitely wouldn't be opposed to them trying. ![]()

I'm fine with LIs not being pretty, but iI'm with you, IB it's a little too much for me. And you left ouf his enormous body and his little head with again enormous horns
... I mean, I'm romancing him anyway and I might like his romance after all, but, he's really not looking good to me
edit: IB is the equivalent of making a krogan a LI to me. And I'm quite confident they would never make a female krogan LI

For me, the turian goes so far beyond resembling anything humanoid that you are just romancing the voice ('cause he looks like an animal). ![]()

You can be 20-40, according to Laidlaw, and Solas and Blackwall are in their 40s, so it would be kind of weird.
Wait, age is a customization choice?

I'm going for Sera because yes I do think she is cute but her personality makes it seem like she would be fun to be around and have a great sense of humor which is something I require in a significant other lol

I'm a straight, male gamer and my preferred LI in this game is Cassandra followed by Vivienne. In DA2 my favourite companion (who would have loved to have romanced) was Aveline, so I don't necessarily think the "straight guys are shallow" argument works. I'm not really seeing how those two are "non-traditional" but if they are then I guess you can count me in as liking the non-traditional romances.
Let's not forget that a great many straight guys wanted to romance Sera in Inquisition too, a non-human character.

It has been confirmed that you can now romance the Iron Bull. That gives me a good enough reason to buy DA: Inquisition as my first DA game. ![]()

I am also a straight male but I also play as a female in Dragon Age and I always romance females so Sera was and still is my choice to romance hehehehe, I will play as a male in a later play through. And I ahve to say I was so happy back when they announced Tali as a love interest in Mass Effect 2 so I have no problem in romancing no-human characters, they just have to have a personality I like.
