Actually considering all the complaining about Cassandra's 'masculine jaw' and Vivienne's shaved head, I don't think the females are quite as conventional as everyone considers? I find them beautiful, but I've seen plenty people complain about their appearances-- Sera's too. So I think all the companions and the potential LIs aren't conventional? At least not in the eyes of a fair amount. I think everyone has had insults slung their way over their appearances, sadly. ![]()

I certainly don't see the massive disparity in the conventionality of the current confirmed 6.

Iron Bull is repulsive looking to me, I'm sure he's a lovely guy but that's not a stereotype of an attractive male. He looks like he's on steroids (not a good thing) muscles are nice, especially on an athletic build but muscles like Iron Bulls are taking it too far - that's beyond body building stuff and imho there's nothing less attractive than a overblown body builder.
Edit: his face, head size and horns all add to what is already an unattractive package, I don't think I could even subject my Female Qunari to that... maybe I can make a really ugly male Qunari for him.
Whereas I personally think that Iron Bull is sexy as hell. I love his huge, muscular build and his ruggedly handsome looks. The only thing I'd change about him is tone down his horns a bit, but other than that he pushes all the right buttons for me and I am absolutely thrilled that he's a LI available to everyone.

I'm a (technically) straight man, but I have a weird propensity for playing straight female characters (I'm willing to bet that I'm likely a massive exception to the rule, though).
You may be right about that being (currently) exceptional.
Much research suggests that the group of male gamers includes a significant proportion playing as female lesbian player characters. That's how I tend to roll. But with quality writing, many will take the next step in roleplaying from female lesbian to female straight.
In another thread I responded to romancing preferences with the top two being female/female but due to the interest of the writing I have planned female/male play-throughs which I have not previously attempted.
Of those I'm first going to #ridethebull.

It is interesting that while all the female companions/advisors wouldn't look out of place among the super-models in any modern fashion magazine, the male companions are all over the place, and only two are really conventionally attractive. As a straight woman, I'm not sure whether to find this frustrating or complimentary.
I do think though, that straight female gamers are more likely to choose a less attractive LI if he has a great personality than straight male gamers are. Most of the 'ew all the characters are fugly' threads seem to be started by straight males complaining about the women not being hot enough. Where the straight women concerned about the choice of LIs seem more focused on personality and whether they'll have a guy who will suit their characters.
i am over-generalizing of course, and there are notable exceptions to both... It's just interesting that the devs seem more willing to challenge the standard when it comes to male LIs than female ones. At least physically.... I'm still a bit concerned that my choices will be from a pool of rugged warrior alpha male types, and I will continue to pine away for the cerebral nerdmance I've always wanted...
To be fair, Varric and Solas are both up for LI's. Solas seems like the nerd character we've all been waiting for, and while people make jokes about Varric's manliness he's hardly an alpha personality and does have a nerdier side to him in the sense that he makes a career out of writing romance novels.

"Masculine Jaw", "Shaved Head". and "Bad makeup/haircut decisions" aren't quite as far away from "conventional" as some of the potential male LI's. Perhaps Solas and Cullen are both within the "conventional" qualifications as well, but IB's outside the norm even for his race and Varric's short and stocky stature is a bit more noticeable than Cass's atypical jawline. But I will give Bioware kudos for experimenting with the female characters' appearance a little more than they usually do. You're basically correct when you say these characters aren't as "conventional" it's just that what deviates from "conventional" seems to differ a fair deal depending on whether it's a male or female characters.

DA:O was the first game I'd ever played where I felt like the game designers actually considered my perspective as a female gamer. I hold the DA series up upon a pedestal of what I believe the future of gaming to be, so that is why I am a tiny bit disappointed.
I don't know if I will ever play a game that I feel will consider my perspective as a lesbian. That's why I prefer the all bi system so I can hold on to the coattails of other gamers and get the same choices. I hoped this game would make me feel that way but unfortunately I feel like I was told here's Sera now go to the kiddies table the adults have things to do now.

Of course, it is, but I was talking stereotypes, and I don't think he's a stereo-typically attractive man.

Perhaps. Personally I find all the characters attractive, so it's difficult for me to really understand what people find unattractive about them, though I understand everyone has their own preferences. ![]()

I know quite a few straight male gamers who would love to trade your for a Cassandra

True, I'm really gunning for Solas but kind of feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment. Varric I'm on the fence about... It's been suggested that we'll help him resolve the Bianca thing, and it would feel weird to me to go from that to entering a romance with him. I do have faith in the writers... but, for now, Id have to see how that's handled in the game (if he is a romance) before deciding if I want to go there.

Surely Vivienne must be a confirmed LI for gender balance?
So it's going to be Varric or Solas.
I would have leaned toward Varric but having Gareth David-Lloyd as VA must increase the speculation for Solas' LI status.

Sera seems like a fun character that has also had a serious life, and can be just as serious when she has to be. Josephine seems very sophisticated and elegant, as well as a completely sweetheart. I find the options for gay females to be rather interesting characters that I look forward to meeting, but that's my personal opinion. What about Sera has you feeling like that? ![]()

Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
Sure, but you don't have to be attracted to the LI for your character to romance them. Obviously, I understand why most people don't do as I do, but its definitely an area where separating yourself from character can lead to a better story/RP experience. I'd point to Garrus as an example of this.
EDIT: This comment isn't directed at you specifically, I just used your quote to make the point.

Perhaps. Personally I find all the characters attractive, so it's difficult for me to really understand what people find unattractive about them, though I understand everyone has their own preferences.
Cheers, I personally do as well. The way I judge is by checking to see how much the character's features deviate from what I perceive as the "average", human beings tend to be attracted to the average as a basis for standard beauty, so you can usually tell how much a character deviates from what is conventionally attractive by looking at how much they deviate from the features of the average person.

I'd personally be happy with either. I was pretty happy to find out about IB as well, but there are rumors flying around that his romance might involve two things I don't want to get involved in, open relationships, and political drama over my romance. I guess I can kinda see where you're coming from with Varric, there's just certain dramatic aspects to romantic arcs that some people just don't want to get involved in.

Look at the female li options vs. the male li options. Do you see a pattern?I don't understand, why are you disappointed?

My friend actually thinks that Sera looks like "a grandma". I don't agree, but to each his own, I suppose. : P

This might clarify the open relationship rumours. I don't believe it's something they're doing in DA:I, but something the might look at in the future.

I think people are afraid that the gay and lesbian companions are only sidekick characters whereas the straight ones get much more story importance.
Could be true for Sera, but she'll still

I do...but I got the impression that you liked all the li options for femQuisitor... so I don't understand why you're disappointed. Was this impression incorrect?
be an awesome sidekick if that's the case.
Doesn't look like it'll be true for Dorian.

The Isabela romance was open. You could totally let her sleep with Zevran while romancing. Unless you specifically say 'no sexytimes,' Isabela assumes 'yes sexytimes.'
Yeah but you could go with Isabella. I'm cool with threesomes, I'm not so cool with open relationships, just not my thing.

I love Sera's character but just not as one that I would want to be my main romance. I would prefer the more mature Cassandra but also my meaning of the comment was so many people wanted Cassandra as a love interest since DA2 came out and she also seems to be much more plot relevant. Maybe I'm wrong.

How do you feel about Josephine? She seems pretty mature and also likely plot-relevant, since she's an advisor.
