The most likely gate was for qunari and against dwarves. And what do you know:, Varric's tension with qunari is mentioned in his author interview.

 

I'm sorry to bang on about that, but trauma-related reason is a slippery slope for a romance restriction. Besides, the Qunari PC is Vashoth, s/he has nothing to do with the Qunari attack, it's totally unrelated.

 

Simple "not into you" is much more believable, attraction doesn't justify itself.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Varric is bisexual, in the somewhat unlikely event he is a love interest after all. I mean, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was straight, either, but we know BioWare don't consider 'he only mentioned liking girls' a valid reason to assume heterosexuality.

 

Varric has never said anything one way or another about men. All we have to base assumptions about his sexuality on are one past relationship with a dwarf woman, an off-the-cuff remark about dwarf serving girls, and a joke about not being into humans which he may or may not have meant. (And technically, I guess, the fact that a human apostitute was able to put the whammy on him, but I wouldn't read anything into that.)

I totally agree, but truth it's that I would be fine even with Varric suddenly showing interest only in men (I mean I'd be ok with as far as we're considering only his sexuality, not if we're thinking of balance of gender and sexuality of LIs in general). I have to say though, that there seems to be people who wouldn't be too happy about him being the other male bi option because he still would be another male bi who seems to favour women. But I guess that's a different problem.

While I do think he is straight, really those "points" should be taken carefully.  Some posters used much of the same points to argue about Anders as well.  Yes, I know that it worked for Cass, but we still shouldn't look for patterns where there is likely none.

 

I don't think a closeness with a cousin-in-law is a sign of being bisexual at all, even if she's transwoman or not.  And that's still pretty much like his sister.  Ew.  

 

That's an unsettling train of thought,  to be honest.  Odd place for you to jump to for a reasoning for any potential bisexuality from Varric.  You might need to do some soul-searching here.

Plot twist: in Inquisition, Varric has an angsty personal quest involving his ex showing up again ... only it's an ex-boyfriend, someone he was with before Bianca.

 

It would be the only thing we didn't see coming. (Well, except when making up crazy theories ...)

Mae is a transwoman but that's not relevant to Varric's sexuality since she's his cousin's wife.

Not relevant to me.  Guessing what BioWare is going to do with a character is very rarely a good idea.  I'm not saying Varric's bisexual, but I really wouldn't jump to any conclusions.  That's always a fool's gambit with this company.
