A little race-gating might help me narrow down who I'll be romancing. xD
At this point, I'm looking for a harem option.

Varric with just female dwarves seems like a lot of effort for very, very few players. I think it's fair to say that female dwarves are probably the least played gender/race combination.
It's also apparent from reading the Varric fan threads (which the developers have done) that a lot people want to romance him with other races than dwarves.
It would be interesting to see if Varric is enough of a draw to get people to play the least chosen option (in general, not for me, since my only two lady Wardens are both dwarves). I have a feeling that if Varric is a straight lady dwarf only romance, there will be a significant increase in players who pick that option.

Before I go back to ME3, I was wondering if I may ask something to the men in the thread: If Varric was straight, would you roll up a lady to romance him with?

Sigh...no. I would only romance Varric if he was bi. It's hard for me to willingly choose to do a straight romance. Tried the same with Alistair, but playing as a female wasn't the same for me. I couldn't go through with it.
Varric has already said he doesn't find human's attractive, dwarves seem to not be really fond of elves anyway and varric also wouldn't be interested in a Qunari after what happened in DA 2, at least this is the reasons I have seen people give

"Aveline, I thought you'd have noticed by now: I lie a lot."
-Varric
I see the two final LIs being so:
1) Vivienne: Bisexual and race-gated against Qunari. The tensions between the Thedasian nations and the Qunari would hurt her standing, and with how that is her thing wouldn't risk it.
2) Solas: Bisexual and race-gated against Dwarves. He loves the Fade and would want to share his passion with his lover, so with the Dwarves cut off from the Fade it wouldn't work.
I don't see why everyone takes it for granted that Varric isn't into humans
Yeah he said he wasn't, but he lies/fibs/jokes/embellishes all the time
he could have had other reasons for not being into Hawke

My brother says yes and he'd play as a dwarf too so he could 'kill two birds with one stone'.
When Varric said he "didn't like humans", he was pretty much making a joke. About 99.9% sure because of the situation and the tone he used.
I just think it's less likely they'd gate humans, since human will be what most players pick (and most casual players don't do a zillion different playthroughs like we do).

Very true. The line in question is only spoken if Hawke is hitting on Merrill while Varric is in the party.

I always thought that these last two romances yet to be revealed were the gated ones. As things stand now, we have six romances: two straight, two bi, and two gay, of each gender. This means that everyone gets two choices. Which Gaider has said has always been the goal; giving the player choice.
These other two romances could be seen as...not exactly "bonuses", but it has been said that they are aiming for choice, and not exactly fairness. Right now they have equal choices. With these two romances to come, if they are the gated ones, then we start moving toward the whole thing being a little bit skewed toward one race/gender over others.

Pretty much this
I was on board with Solas being gated from dwarves briefly but the more I think about it the less it makes sense UNLESS the guy is a hypocrite like some companions are then it might work but it just paint him as someone I wouldn't want to spend time with in my book fade expert or not :/

My boyfriend says: "So fast."
Of course, his favorite ME romance is Garrus, and he really liked his DuranDuran Aeducan/Zevran playthrough of DAO, so he's already comfortable playing female characters and romancing men in BW games. But he thinks Varric will be the closest to a Garrus-type romance we could get in DAI, despite the fact that the Inquisitor is not Hawke.

Why would he be a hypocrite?
Why would he be a hypocrite?
Cause his information mentions having a dislike of people who sees him as 'just an elf' so if he would refuse to romance a dwarf pc because he sees them as 'just a dwarf' that would come off as hypocritical to me.

I don't think he'll be a LI, so gating isn't an issue, but how is he a hypocrite? He's a Fade scholar, more or less, and spends a great deal of his time in the Fade. If he's going to be in a relationship, why wouldn't it be important to him that his partner be able to share this thing that is such a vital part of his life? If I were a marine biologist who spent 10 months a year at sea, I don't think I'd get involved with someone with uncontrollable sea sickness. I mean, if I fell in love with them and then discovered they had uncontrollable sea sickness, I might try to make it work, but it's common knowledge that dwarves aren't connected to the Fade, so there's really no ambiguity there.

I don't think he'd see them as 'just a dwarf, but more 'someone I can't share my life's passion with'. Chances are he wouldn't date a Tranquil either for the same reason.
^ I agree
