Huh, people are upset because Ubisoft decided to put 4 white guys as protagonists? I drew the line years ago when they pretty much decided to turn this series into an anual release. I'm never understood why Unity drew so much attention, because apart from a couple of titles such as Inquisition, the white male hero trope is still going rather strong with today's games.

Their changing excuses/explanations for the lack of diversity were the true pathetic part of the whole issue. Here's a parody video of the 'it's hard to animate female characters' and sundry excuses.
I've seen it. Quite funny too. ![]()
Last OT thing, I swear:

Now I'm almost sad I don't own an Xbox. Not because I don't like the company, but I already own a PS3, a PS4 and a Wii.
Back to the topic, I wouldn't be surprised if they revealed the last LIs this weekend. I could be mistaken, but I heard the ME team was going to be at SDCC, and I know that Cameron Lee is going to be there as well. It would probably save a lot of panel time if they announced the LIs ahead of time, otherwise I could see both teams getting hammered with that question. The ME team too, even though they wouldn't know really anything.
However, if they announced the LIs at the Con itself, that would generate hype. I've only been right about one thing so far in regards to the romances, so I don't have the best track record. ![]()

I will only speak for myself. It's more upsetting with Ac and the team ubisoft because they started to make efforts toward inclusiveness. Like Aveline, Conor. I had hopes for the future and they were crushed when I saw that not only one but four white generic dudes and not a single woman among them, while plenty of women, noble and common girls fighted along men during the french revolution. Marianne is the symbol of the french revolution.
It's just an insult to history to not put a woman among the Assassins. As a french I feel insulted that there is none. I even dreamed that the next hero would be a woman, maybe I was too naïve.But four heroes and nothing ?
And their excuses, bullsh*t, it makes things even worse. I'm not going to buy the game, not really interested, too bad the french revolution is one my favorite periods..
Anyways with DA:I, I'm not planning to play another game before a long time.

I hope Ubisoft will listen to the criticism and finally feature a standalone female Assassin. It's doubtful, but she could have her own trilogy.

I think they are more likely to keep doing their games with white guys out of spite if anything else.

They did do that already. It's called AC: Liberation. It featured a woman of Creole descent. It was on the Vita and if you've never heard of it, it was because that game didn't get crap for a marketing budget, even for a hand held game on a poorly selling system.

There is an HD version too that they released just recently for PC and consoles. It looks just as good as AC3. I personally thought it was an excelent game despite being an hand held port.

That's weird. I remember it being announced. I remember when it was released. I also own the white Vita that came packaged with it, and it was a free PS3 port with AC4.
At this point, I don't know how anyone who actually cares about the AC series beyond just hopping on the hate train about no female assassin in Unity couldn't have known about it.

I'm still getting Unity, but their comment about that was just retarded

There was ads for Liberation? I never saw one, and I tend to watch out for games with female leads that aren't like Bayonetta. I can pull out the statements backing up that female leads don't get nearly as much of a marketing budget as male leads do.
I enjoyed AC: Black Flag myself quite a bit, and I felt its controls and gameplay were stronger than in AC2 or AC3. It was a very good game and I got hooked. I noticed about the upcoming AC not having women at all because I was wondering about Unity and I was following E3 news this time around. When Ubisoft pulled that one, I was personally left a little sad. Also, there's an HD remake of Liberation? I would not have known, because they haven't bothered to do any sort of promotion about it. <shrug>
Anyhow, about them romances: July 24th is Comic Con. Do you think they'll release the LI info this weekend, or during the con? Or, do you think they'll have us wait a little while longer?

Being a White Male, and apparently needing to constantly 'check my privilege' or whatever, I tend to defer to my video game loving wife on major social issues such as female representation in video games.
In this case, she can't stop watching the trailer for Unity. She has loved every AC so far, is beyond excited for Unity, and is eagerly awaiting further news on Comet, I think it is. I asked her as I was typing this sentence if she thought the 'no female assassin in Unity' was a big deal, and her response was "We've had this discussion. No." And we have, and her stance has been unwavering. Since she's the one with a horse in the race on this issue, I let her determine our household stance. We'd both like to see more women in games, but think the specific flipping out over Unity is kind of silly.
Others are free to go wherever their heart leads them, of course.

I hope they release the last two soon so I can solidify my plans. Then again actually meeting the characters could very well change my mind. Seriously, though, I have two exams to study for and a research paper to write yet I am more concerned with the last two LIs in DAI. Priorities.

Unity is getting singled out because there were initial plans to include female assassins in MP. Then they changed their minds and when asked why gave poor excuses.

Yeah it's more Ubisoft's terrible excuse ("It'd be hard! Da animations!") is what gets them mocked. With the obscene budgets and massive dev team can't manage what devs with half the resources get? Utterly laughable.

Well, if we're going to be roasting or boycotting companies for saying something stupid, or not including initially planned features, I'm going to have a hard time finding anything to spend my money on. In any industry. And I certainly wouldn't be buying anymore BioWare games...
But enough with this off topicness.
Personally, I'm a little confused about their marketing on the romances. We had a big rush on companions and romances, filling out most of the roster, and then suddenly nothing on the last two. You'd have thought they would have spread it out a bit more equally if they were going to do a staged info-dump.

I was thinking about this the other day too. It could be because the last two are the race-gated options (inset acknowledgement that they could also not be the race-gated ones here), and they're still testing to see if they can un-gate them a bit before announcing them for sure. Bull was going to be gated, after all, but now he's not thanks to the cinematics and animation team.
And then, it could also just be because they want things to announce at various cons and stuff.

When their excuse is essentially "we decided representation of half of the population would be too hard" when 1. they have more than enough resources to pull it off, especially since 2. it's actually not that hard at all! it's easy to get even more angry. It's way too emblematic of how most publishers view women as secondary in all things, so if they get lazy or want to rush a product, it's easy for them to cut female characters because they're disposable.
Gotta have the cash for dose four white dudes, though!
