I'm sorry but relating real life situations to a fictional one is never a good thing, it takes the fun away from the fictional work when you look at it that way.

Fictional situations are often, I'd argue more often than not, meant to be related to real life situations. Either as allegory, commentary, or satire.

You can't really stop people from relating to them in a personal manner, though.  It's bound to happen - writers draw from what they know, and that makes plenty of real-world analogues in an entirely fictional universe.

It's why some have commented in the past on how they feel an affinity to dwarves due to Andrastian women looking nothing like them, or remarking on how the Dalish are reminiscent of a specific Native American group because of the similarities, including the usage of "the People". It's easy to see something of yourself in a group when aspects of your cultural identity are utilized for the creation of a fictional people.

I think it would be narratively acceptable to have non-human races that don't want to date humans. I'm not saying it's a social issue or that there's real life implications, but it does make for good story telling. If you're going to gate characters, especially if it's in part due to bad experiences in a character's past, then it makes good sense that non-human characters would sometimes not want to be in a relationship with human characters. It also makes perfectly good sense that some might just not be attracted to humans. When I heard that Varric said he wasn't into humans, I just took it at face value. Maybe he was joking, but maybe also he does just like women his own general size. It's hardly unrealistic to think he would. When Velanna tells Anders in banter that she thinks humans are disgusting, that also makes plenty of sense for her character. I think that, if Bioware is going to add race gating, they need to be conscious of its consistency. If it makes sense for a non-human character to be gated from humans, then they should do it. I'm not saying this as someone with a bias against human PCs. In fact, I only play human and elf.

I think the lack of knowledge about who's going to be race-gated is putting the most stress on the thread.  I think it's even getting worse than not knowing who the last LIs are.

I don't mind there being a portrayal of racism in the game. Honestly I don't mind that much about having racist companions or squadmates. That's hardly something new. I have said before about how I intend to kick any racist companions off the team in protest; I was over reacting at the time(though I'll still probably do that every now and then just to vent), but their existence in general doesn't bother me that much.

What I do have a problem with is any implication that racism is ok. If there's a companion who refuses to romance another race due to bad experiences or prejudice, alright, that's fine, so long as it is blatantly obvious that it's intended to be a character flaw for them. Velanna's racism against humans was a character flaw on her part, one she eventually over came.

If Cullen or Varric are race gated against qunari because of what happened in Kirkwall despite our qunari not even being part of the Qun let alone having anything to do with that invasion, that should not be presented as being a justified position for them, and it should color all non-romantic interaction with the qunari inquisitor, as well.

One of my problems with the race-gating due to racism aspect is that while it should be a character flaw, it's one that inherently can't be overcome within the span of the game. It's just an aspect of their character that's going to stagnate, and that's not particularly appealing to me.

Also elves, dwarves (the species) and qunari aren't actual people in the world. Humans are. Thus why the bolded doesn't really apply for the whole humans should be restricted cause elves are thing. There are no elves playing this game to get offended.

its the same with  "majority of DA/ME players are white, male and straight"

and you know those people waited a few years and yeah pay money to know that they have restricted content for what only some few guys just wanted and would use at all

it kinda hypocritical when they made content for all players and still cut it for that who does want to play someone different that ordinary human and they have a choice...and they are not a small part of players who played as ones and wanted to play as ones no matter what some marketing guys would say for you with their bullshit about "majority-80% of DA players played only humans" and this is why we make only human Inquisitor for you,....but you know that this is not true(you even can find many sites of DA fans and you never find a more than 30-50% who played humans at all) and people was so angry(actually they was then they have a DA2 with their only hawke) that bio return races

and they return races but does not give them enough content-options....most of your companions and especially advisors in DAI are not equal in the terms of races, morality, opinions and sides...most of your companions are humans and pro Orlas/ Orlais Chantry/Templars(i think that many does understand that many players really does not like this factions and never be)...and you have to romance just them..

.for male players it is worst then even females because they have Bull and Solas(both non-humans and not a pro Orlais/Cahntry/Templars) at least...and 3 male non-human Inuisitors  does not have any non-human and not a pro Orlais/Chantry/Templar female to romance and it is worst for non-human mages

the male players only have

Cassandra-human female-Orlais Chantry seeker/Templar

Josephine-human female-Antivan noble and old Lelianna friend

Vivienne-human female-Orlais noble advisor, and even a mage Li is pro chantry

Sera who was the only non-human female was made a lesbian so thats all what we have only humans and pro Orlais/Chantry/Tempalrs females

i dont know but at least for me its obliviusly to much content  designed for mostly just 1 male Inquisitor from 4 and mostly for a non-mages humans

females at least have Solas and Bull and was cutted only from another human as Tevinter exile Dorian

I really didn't think people would take romance in video games this serious, I mean I like my romances in games but I never took it so seriously that I  brought sexuality or race into it as a serious thing to debate over in real life  I mean seriously.

Well things like this in some ways leak into the real world. Particularly the LGBT romances. It's a big deal for the main character to be gay. I don't think I've seen that in anything but Bioware games.

...You all had really intense debates and heavy discussions about representation and I just HAD to be away from the computer because of family matters. I had a hell of a LOT of bullets for this topic of conversation too.

Phooey!

Part of my problem with the "elves/dwarves/whatever" aren't real argument is that they don't tackle the issue of race with human ethnicities in Dragon Age(or most any fantasy setting with standard fantasy races other than humans).

There's a degree of cultural posturing and tensions, but we don't see anything in the realm of race politics, race relations, or real abject racism. There's no apparent stigma towards interracial relationships between humans of different ethnicities in Thedas. There's no widespread discrimination or prejudice.

The only real instance I can think of is some directed towards the chasind, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to what we see between humans and elves and everyone and qunari.

So I have an issue when they use these fantastic races to tackle these real world issues but don't feel obliged to follow through with it because "they aren't real."

Well this is as far as I go for now. Please remember to stop by the Cards Against Thedas thread and supply us with gerunds and gerund compatible black cards. Help us make this game a success. Your support is greatly appreciated :v.
