They are both pretty popular.
Is Merrill pretty popular? It seems every time shes brought up people seem to hate her.

I always felt she was maybe not when compared to the others i mean Isabella has such a strong fan base for umm alot of reason ha ha. I doubt they will Jacob Merrill. I doubt they will Jacob any one really because well people were angry ha ha.

I loved her, particularly her rivalry. My best friend also loved her romance.
I think there's a good collection of Merrill lovers (she's certainly not at Jacob levels of unpopularity), she's just a bit of a polarizing character.

I dont know, personally i liked Isabella and Merrill as Romances...Mostly Merrill...
But Anders and Fenris were a bit too...i dont know...angsty.
Those two reminded me of those stupid characters in twilight.(Which was a major craze at the time)
Fenris was Dante. Anders was just a victim of trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole from his DA:A incarnation.
I thought Silk Fox and Sky were handled well in that game but i always went for Dawn Star well except for the time i got her and Silk fox ha ha i liked having that option
Certainly, it is no concrete indication that there will or must be a gay man. But "realism" of any sort in these discussions is unrealistic in itself, seeing as though a group of developers, sitting around, discussing the features and characters and romances, actually are the ones deciding on what to put in their fictional fantasy game. It's already artificial from the start.

Anders was an idiot. Who merged with an even bigger idiot who didn't belong in this world.
I don't know if I want to call it "angst". It's worse.

Yeah i definite think he was added after the idea of "Angsty possessed rebel mage" was written into the game.
They dont even feel like the same character.
Jade Empire is the reason I'm a BioWare fan.
Yup same
Off topic a bit, but would you blame Anders or Justice for the actions of Anders ...Anders was an idiot. Who merged with an even bigger idiot who didn't belong in this world.

I dont believe "Anders" even exists anymore by the end of the game. Maybe even sooner.
Though props to them for providing both gay men and women with at least one LI to romance, way back in 2005. It took the Mass Effect series 3 games to do that.
It is one of the major reasons why I do look back on Jade Empire fondly and do love it. It was the first time BW made a m/m option. And it is why whenever JE is brought up, I always praise it for what content it offered considering the date in which it was released (almost a decade ago).
I'd also like to see another game set in its universe someday.
I really enjoyed both Anders and Kaidan, but I can't give much praise to Mass Effect when there were only options for me in one game, and then it was only one actual companion with a poorly developed NPC on the side.
Yeah Mass Effect is a good example of a game that the for the most part handled romances well (as in people who partook in romances got a good deal of emotional fulfillment out of them, and tended to grow quite a attached to the characters they chose). But did a rather poor job of handling romantic options (as in, certain sexualities and genders got substantially fewer options and/or content than others).

I don't know. I kind of want to blame Justice more. Just because he doesn't belong in the first place. And I don't think he's completely "lost" as a Vengeance entity. I think his actions are due to him just being a Fade spirit. He's used to creating and enacting things solely through Willpower. Once he's in this world, he can't do that.. so I think this contributes to frustration and impatience. Everything must be "now now now!" And the only way he can do it is some lame plan that blows up a bunch of old ladies.

I agree with this assessment

Yeah, there were too many male centric options imo. Some characters could have gotten a popularity boost as well if they weren't done that way.

That depends how you look at it. 80% played the standard MShep in ME2. Quite logical to skew content for the next game in that direction.
I don't think there is much Anders left in Anders. I think what remains of Anders is but echoes and shadows. What is left is an amalgamation of Justice and Anders and what they've become, in something of a new form together, by the last 1/4th or so of DAII.

What I didn't like about Mass Effect (besides the lack of options for me) was that it seemed like they wrote way too little friendship content in order to allocate those resources towards piling up more LIs. While that might not hurt the romance content, itself, I think it isn't actually a great way to handle romances. I'd rather they limited the number down to a couple choices for everyone and didn't cut so much content from non-LI development paths.
I think both Anders and Justice are responsible for the Chantry going boom.
The desire for violent revolution is coming from Justice, but Justice was turned into a vengeful spirit by Anders' own anger at perceived injustices. Justice also became a spirit of vengeance thanks to Anders' own hubris. Rather than allowing Justice to return back to the Fade where he belonged, he had the hubris to believe he could allow Justice to possess him without negative consequences. The merger of those two was like the perfect storm and they both play a role in corrupting the other.
If Justice were to remain the mortal realm by joining with a mage, he needed a mage like Wynne. He needed someone who was clam and serene, and who cared for the world and others more than herself. With Anders he got an angry and selfish mage. You couldn't pick a worse a candidate.
As much as i loved Garrus and Tali, i still think that DA has handled romance options much much better in almost every case.
We will see if that holds true for the next game.

I played a DudeShep. I have a handful of them, actually. Didn't mean I wanted to pursue any women and engage in heterosexual romance content with them.

I think this was mainly an ME2 problem, which too be fair, had a ridiculous number of characters in general, and no party banter/background dialogue to flesh them out alongside their animation heavy conversations. Half of the stuff that made Mordin awesome, for example, could have easily been relegated to party banter in a DA style system.

Logical, maybe, but also a terribly good way to isolate those 20% or even 5% (Dwarf Warden FTW!) of players. People like having choices in games like Bioware, and they like feeling as though their choices are acknowledged, even if they're in the minority.
