If I recall, it's not that you automatically end up in bed with Javik, but it's rather easy to accidentally end up in bed with Javik.

I remember when I played a fem-shep I actively tried to get the Javik scene and couldn't make it happen, though that may have been because the Thane romance seemingly locked me out of everything else, running my plan of going from Liara to Thane to Sam.

It's automatic if you didn't romance anyone.  The Thane romance would lock it out.

I think it only happens if you've never romanced anyone, though I could be wrong.  As I said, it's more annoying in the context of the rest of the game.  I mean, flirty and sometimes inappropriate FemShep could have made for an interestingly flawed character, had I been able to choose for her to be that way.  Just as I could choose for the Warden or Hawke to be that way or not.  The fact that ME made that her default personality was what I found frustrating and a bit icky... and I say that as a straight woman. I imagine for lesbian women trying to RP a lesbian Shepard, it would have been even worse.

I think it'll be neat if they someday make a butch lesbian romance option. There's nobody in DA:I who would really fit that, other than maaaaaybe Cassie (who is still a bit more conventionally feminine than I associate with that label), who turned out to be straight.

Not to over-fixate on butch/femme dynamics or anything, but all of the same sex love interests they've ever provided for females - silk fox, liara, kelly, traynor, merrill, isabella - are pretty distinctly feminine, presumably because they are also supposed to appeal to straight males. Throwing a butch character into the mix would be a nice show of diversity along with addressing some of the "bioware is only so accommodating to lesbian romances because their male audience thinks girl-on-girl is hot" thing.

While appealing to men is likely a large part of it, I would have to disagree that it is a key appeal. I'm a woman myself, and have a huge preference for femme/femme couples, so Bioware's design choices suit me just fine. To me though, I'd think that a genuinely feminine woman, would be something like, one who is all dresses all the time, a flower in hair, whilst waiting for either a charming tough-ass femme and/or butch to sweep her off her feet. Truth be told, the charming tough-ass femme/feminine woman would be my favorite type of female coupling.  :D

However, none of the female characters you pointed out, even Merril, are any of that sort. They are all tough and independent in their own right, with Isabella, for example, kind of "a little butch" on the inside, despite the seemingly "femmy" appearence. That said, I do agree that more diversity could always be used, to provide a greater variety of romantic options for everyone. :)

I'd always viewed Cass as being soft butch myself, she is still feminine in alot of ways like you mentioned. As much as I would love to see an androgynous gay woman or hell even a bi woman in a DA game it seems highly unlikely. They will want to appeal to the mass market, so your femme type will be the norm.

You just need to follow some simple rules.

1. Never talk to Kaidan.

2. Never talk to Jacob.

3. Never talk to Vega.

I was trained well with Silk Fox - Sky situation in Jade Empire. :D

I did that.

But more out of sheer disinterest for these characters rather that trying to avoid flirty dialogue.

Kahlee's used Hitachi Magic Wands are more blatant and obvious, but I have always been extremely suspicious of the fact that they chose to make a lesbian character obsessed with her vibrating, expensive toothbrush.

So her toothbrush really wasn't for teeth...? Make sense.

Naw, Kaidan, Jacob and Vega are all cool characters. I just wish Jacob wasn't a token black.

The problem is FemShep jumps at them whether you want it or not. If you RP a lesbian character it's... frustrating.

If you jump through enough loops you can get "I saw Liara first" dialogue from Kaidan with FemShep. Hilarious.

But Anderson's black so...that said Jacob ending up with baby momma drama and being the only LI to cheat did hit my "really?" button pretty hard.

That may be the case - hell, I'd be lying if I said the idea isn't interesting... And had they made it something you could choose to do it'd be fine. It's more the notion that my unattached female character couldn't keep it in her pants at her own party after having a few drinks... without any input from me, the player.  This after the Vega thing... after the Jacob auto-flirts....

You can avoid it by keeping the party calm.

ME 1&2 all assume straight Shep of either gender.

In ME1, Liara confronted me about Ashley. I'd never shown any romantic interest in Liara and... had never talked to Ashley ever on the Normandy and never took her on any mission.

In ME2, Miranda, Tali, and Jack all thought I wanted to hook up with them, and the game thought I did, too, since my only dialogue choices at that point were romance triggers.

I think they cleaned their act up in ME3; no one assumes you love them on account of your gender, and YOU choose who you get to flirt with, even if you get turned down.

Ah gotcha. The wording just confused me for a second. And yes, I agree. Jacob's writer f*cked up.

I think female Shepard come across as flirty with James even if you don't try to "romance" him.

And then if you don't romance anyone, you get in bed with Javik accidentally.

They seriously messed up with female Shepard in Mass Effect 3. Arguably the entire trilogy was not very good.

Ah. Glad to be of help :)

And yeah I just...was it so hard to make him like ever other ME2 LI and have a few damn romance lines? He and Brynn could've just been friends in the romanced version (hell have her get knocked up by someone else).

Or at least keep the "She want's to name the baby Shepard" dialogue from happening if he's romanced. That was just disturbing.

When Kaidan looked at my fem shep like a sad puppy in a dog shelter I just wanted the option to say I'm sorry I prefer women or even I just love the color blue.

Yeah I have to say after some time has went by and after re-playing the trilogy the magic that Mass Effect 1 had lost its power as the series went on and I think the Mass Effect team just lost their way, to me though Dragon Age > Mass Effect always, the DA team just seemed to always be better, then again unlike so many others I enjoyed DA 2 I guess its mostly because even though I do enjoy some sci fi genres I prefer fantasy over it, I like Lord of the Rings more than I did Star Wars.

The thing I don't get about Jacob, why make him  default option in ME2 (forced flirting, ass shots and being basically Miranda-light) only to completely screw his romance in ME 3.
