I've been in many mass effect forums, and on internet, Miranda was really bashed, while Tali got all the love no matter where you were. And the Tali fans were legions.

Miranda is clearly popular, but more with the silent majority, or people who don't give much their opinions about her, but the hatred seemed very strong with the hardcore fans.

Really? I loved both Tali and Miranda. It was so hard to pick just one to romance! :(

Dorian is a minority and he's pretty popular considering he's a gay option.

Dorian isn't a minority.

As far as I can tell, Cullen is far more popular. Hell, Solas is more popular, and he's not even confirmed. Of course, that could have something to do with the fact that Dorian is only available to male Inquisitors as well.

It's never as simple as blatant racism. It's quite subtle.

Allan stated that he were white during early development, and he has dark skin, but more Mediterranean. They're still classified as white. Their facial features are not too deviate from the Caucasian look.

Yes, he is. BioWare explicitly stated that he is a POC, and his real world racial equivalent is Indian.

Jacob was unpopular even before ME3 comes out. I think that's one of the reasons why they make him cheated since they think no one would care.

The problem with Jacob it's not being black, it's being almost rude and having the ability to make Shepard sound terribly everytime she gets near him  :pinched:

And I think something similar it's happening with with Vivienne, her personality may sound fascinating in some sense, but I can definnitely understand if it doesn't sound very appealing as LI for a lot of people... We'll have to wait to see what people thinks about her after playing the game, anyway

They changed it though. David Gaider, Dorian's writer, says that the closest real world analogue for Dorian would be someone from India.

That's true, but Cullen is available to females. Dorian was getting a lot more female attention when there was a chance that he could be bisexual. He easily fell into the second most talked about spot for male LI possibilities before the gay confirmation came. Cullen is kind of an unfair comparison for new characters, though, because his fans have been following him through 2 games already. Solas is assumed to be at least bisexual, if not straight, so he's getting a lot more female votes. If Dorian was bisexual, I think he would be much, much higher in these polls.

Dorian is an Indian analogue, like others said. Do you think Cortez looks "less white" than Dorian? He has a medium skin tone and blue eyes. I think this whole area is a bit grey.

I didn't expect Josephine to rank on the lower end of the poll. I thought she would be well-rounded enough to be chosen by many players as their favorite LI. I know this is inconclusive evidence of what the actual results would look like, but judging from the effervescent response she received when she was officially revealed, she appeared to be a heavy favorite among the LIs. In reality, it will probably look like:

1) Cassandra
2) Josephine
3) Cullen
4) Sera
5) Iron Bull
6) Dorian

I would've put Dorian above IB, but IBs availability to everyone might allow him to edge Dorian a bit more. Still voted for Dorian though. Even if he won't be a popular romance, I guess that just means more for us? :P

Yes, I acknowledge his sexuality is a factor. I'm not saying it's impossible for characters of color to be popular, but I think it's important to consider race when you're analyzing how they're treated by both the devs and the fans.

Two major things you have to keep in mind about that poll;

-Female LIs will be considerably more popular than they are on the BSN.

-Non-humans will be considerably less popular than they are on the BSN.

Ok, putting his race aside, look at the people who are at the top. All of them are white skin while the people with darker skin like Dorian, Viv, and Josephine are at the bottom. I'm not saying that it's racist for people to have a preference, but it's just that the Euro-centric look seems to dominate the poll. Nothing we can do about it though.

It's mostly Vivienne that's bothering me. If she does turn out to be an LI, I won't be surprised if she's one of the least romanced...

I think it's seen a lot more distinctly on characters like Vivienne, that are undeniably non-white. With the more ambiguous choices, I don't think it's as pronounced. I've seen multiple people on the forums literally say they wouldn't romance Vivienne because they're not attracted to black women. Not even beating around the bush, just out with it. I've never seen anyone say they wouldn't romance Dorian because he's Indian, or Cortez because he's (possibly of mixed) hispanic heritage. Vega was actually one people seemed pretty ragey about not being an option.

You forgot someone who called her ugly as a monkey. Dorian has a pic of him turning white. Even without saying anything Cortez was one of the least romance character in favor of a light skinned guy like Kaidan (Granted, I romanced Kaidan but still)... With Dorian, you can see that he's near the bottom alongside with Josephine, Ironbull, and Viv. What's the connection between those characters? I wonder.

I really believe that Dorian would be much higher if he wasn't the gay choice. I also think Cortez was largely prioritized lower because of story issues. I always romanced Kaidan because he was a companion with content over three games. He had opinions about the in-game world and a decently complex history. Cortez was an NPC in one game and I didn't seem to get anything out of him besides the fact that he was friends with Vega and he had a husband that died.

There is definitely racism at work towards some of these choices. Vivienne especially has copped a ridiculous amount. I'm not denying that at all. I just think we should look at all the reasons why these characters might not have been that popular. With some of them, I think it's more complicated.

To be honest, though, I would expect Dorian to still do better than Iron Bull or Varric once they get in the "real" game statistics. The BSN is way more into non-humans than the general numbers turn in. Whatever they get here, you can knock off at least a few points and tack on a few more to humans. I would bet on that.

I could wonder that too, what has to do IB with Josephine and Vivienne? I mean, IB is a qunari, not a POC human.  And Blackwall is there with a 6.5% and he's quite white-looking, and the difference between the most voted and the least voted is right now a little more than 10 points...

Not to say there's no racism at all, but I think you're presumig that there's more than actually is

That's fine if you don't think race plays a factor into it, but I experience it enough to know how much it influences someone's social standing. Of course with a better personality, they could overcome their short coming in look, but they don't have to try as hard if they were a part of the racial majority.

You don't have to tell me. I'm a gay African American teenager, so I am fully aware of racism.
That being said though, even if Vivienne isn't the most popular romance, I don't think it's fair to start crying out racism in response.

I personally fully expected Josephine to be low ranking. A rather bland non companion character on the face of it at least. Think reaction to her would have been different if it hadn't been for sera and Cassandra announced set sexualities.

I won't be surprised if she turns out as not popular romance option, but that's presuming she might have aloof, condescending personality that'd turn quite a few people off.
