All of the are not conventionally good looking. Blackwall is old and beardy. How many people want to date their grandpa? Qunari is not even human, so there goes the conventional look. On the other hand, Josephine, Vivienne, and Dorian are all young and in-shape humans, but why are they not as popular as the options like Cullen, Cassandra, and Sera? You can't use because Dorian is gay since Sera is also gay. Her standing was lower a bit because of it, but she's also near the top.I could wonder that too, what has to do IB with Josephine and Vivienne? I mean, IB is a qunari, not a POC human. And Blackwall is there with a 6.5% and he's quite white-looking, and the difference between the most voted and the least voted is right now a little more than 10 points...
Not to say there's no racism at all, but I think you're presumig that there's more than actually is

I think Josephine is the type of character that will be unpopular on the BSN and wildly popular with casual players. I think she'll be the (DA:O era) Leliana of DA:I.

I just don't know who I'm going to romance other than Dorian atm. Especially for a f/f romance I was all set for f!Adaar/Cassandra and I'm still super gutted about that tbh. I mean, I know it's premature, but Sera doesn't really excite me from what little we know about her (and I'm wondering if she's going to be gated against humans because of her dislike of nobility, and I am a complete sucker for human/elf relationships). I don't dislike her, but what they've shown us so far hasn't really sparked my interest. I'll probably do f!Adaar/Josephine until someone figures out how to mod Frostbite, but I'm also kinda sad that they've p much implied that adviser romances don't get as much content as companion romances. And I'm hoping this will change once we play the game, but honestly Vivienne intimidates me b/c I feel absolutely unworthy. Like I could be wearing 10 league boots and Vivienne would still be out of the Inquisitor's league XD

You don't have to tell me. I'm a gay African American teenager, so I am fully aware of racism.
That being said though, even if Vivienne isn't the most popular romance, I don't think it's fair to start crying out racism in response.
*hugs*
I'm not saying it's only because of it...but I'm pretty sure it plays a part. The other part is for me anyway she sounds like another ice queen and I don't like BW's ice queens most of the time. (Only one I liked was Miranda and she and Jacob got a personality transplant right after Freedom's Progress).

It's not racism, but people have been taught to be attracted to certain look, presumably the euro-centric look. It has more to do with the media than anything. When were the last time you see an Asian guy in a masculine heroic lead role that has nothing to do with kung-fu and ends up with the girl? You don't have to tell me. To be honest, though, I would expect Dorian to still do better than Iron Bull or Varric once they get in the "real" game statistics. The BSN is way more into non-humans than the general numbers turn in. Whatever they get here, you can knock off at least a few points and tack on a few more to humans. I would bet on that.
Same. If Varric is gated in favor of dwarves and people aren't willing to give IB a chance because of his looks, then I'd expect Dorian, who fits more into the mold of 'classically handsome', to rank higher too.

Ha ha ha. Oh, kids. All of the are not conventionally good looking. Blackwall is old and beardy. How many people want to date their grandpa?
The average age of nowaday's gamer is 31 years old. Nearly 40% of them is over 36 years old. Given the number of teenagers pulling that number down, that means there's plenty of game playing folks for whom Blackwell is either their own age, or just slightly older.

Even without saying anything Cortez was one of the least romance character in favor of a light skinned guy like Kaidan (Granted, I romanced Kaidan but still)...
Speaking just from personal experience... I skipped over Cortez because he wasn't cute and because he was still in love with his husband. Compare that to Kaidan, who's pretty hot, already knows you, and has no baggage. Cortez was also an NPC.
I feel like we need more characters of color in dashing, starring roles, and available to as many players as possible. I would have definitely romanced Jacob with my male Shep. Alas. I might have given Cortez a go if he hadn't been all tragic and strapped to his console for the whole game. Characters of color have just gotten the short end of the stick in terms of involvement and availability.
I see DAI changing this though.

That's fine if you don't think race plays a factor into it, but I experience it enough to know how much it influences someone's social standing. Of course with a better personality, they could overcome their short coming in look, but they don't have to try as hard if they were a part of the racial majority.
I feel like I was saying that race it's not relevant in real life and that's really not what I mean, I hope I'm not sounding like that
But I really don't think racism explains but a little part in this case, if any. And as someone who foun that the only pleasant way to romance Jacob was beng full-renegade and dump him later, I can definitely tell you his race was not the problem with him being unpopular.

I really believe that Dorian would be much higher if he wasn't the gay choice. I also think Cortez was largely prioritized lower because of story issues. I always romanced Kaidan because he was a companion with content over three games. He had opinions about the in-game world and a decently complex history. Cortez was an NPC in one game and I didn't seem to get anything out of him besides the fact that he was friends with Vega and he had a husband that died.
Agree about Cortez and Kaidan ![]()
And about Dorian. In fairness, if Cullen were bi, he'd have 25% of the vote instead of 15% right now, I'll bet lol He also has a two game advantage.
To be even fairer, I think Sera would top any list if she were bi. Ditto for Cass.

As long as people can discuss stuffs calmly, I don't see any problem with that. I'm just saying it like how I see it. People can't even perceive Asian male lead in a masculine way. Many fictions when translated onto films replace them with a white guy. It's just a matter of media portrayal reinforces how people perceive a certain race whether conscious or subconsciously. The situation we have is Catch-22, many people are not used to seeing Asian males in heroic role that are sexualized and masculine and in turn the media refuses to make material starring them because they don't think people would be interested. That is why I like for companies such as Bioware to include more neglected minority characters to give them more exposure.I think we are beginning to step into some very dangerous territory on this topic.

Yeah, it's just that Vivienne has had some really vitriolic racially motivated comments hurled at her, more than any other character =\

Yeah Jacob's main issue was FemShep's terrible voice direction and how he came off as really overly prickly (it's really like after FP he and Miranda switched personalities. He was the one warm and welcoming to begin with and eager to talk while Miranda was business like and shut you down. Then on the Normandy...that's the exact reverse. It's baffling). Him busting out the I love you once you turned him down for sex didn't do him any favors either.
Neither did the "she requires a better man than I." with Miranda.

Are you really telling me that Solas is more "conventionally good looking" than Dorian because Dorian is darker? Is that suppossed to be something most people would agree about? Because it would really surprise me if that's the case

I expect Josephine to be popular like Leliana or Liara because apparently : She is sweet, nice, adorable. Most people like that.
She is romanceable for dudes and female gamers, so the number of people trying her will be big. There will be lesbians as well, but also there will be female straight gamers, because most of them tend to like playing lesbian or bi characters.
