I think the issue I have with the bisexual characters are they always prefer the opposite sex. Kaidan often comments on how beautiful females are, Zevran's tales are usually about females as well, Anders commented on the female warden and wanted to settle down with a female in Awakening, Fenris slept with Isabela while showing no interest in other males, Jack is bisexual based on some of her dialogues but she can only romanceable by males.

Huh

I wasn't aware of this, granted I never romanced any of these characters, well except for Jack, I would have loved to have had her as a bi option but sadly it wasn't to be.

Leliana always came across to me as having a slight preference for women, the tales of her past, her interactions around Morrigan and female wardens, her past with Marjolaine etc. I can't really guess if many bisexual people perhaps do have a slight preference for one gender over another even though they enjoy both, this ain't my place to say. I'm not gonna make claims like this, however I do know bisexual people who have a slight preference for one gender over another IRL. So there's that, not everyone is the same of course duh, but just something like that is a plausible explanation for why certain Bi characters in the DA series are portrayed this way.

I'm just saying is it's usually always the opposite gender. I don't mind them having a preference because I do as well, but it always be the opposite gender as if it seems to be the default. It's more evident in bi males since it could be perceived as making male players more comfortable.

That is all certainly true, but it also lends itself to that same issue of bi-erasure, especially when your squadmates hookup in exclusively m/f couplings, even though they could, theoretically, go for a same-sex partner. (Personally, I always thought Merrill and Isabela were a better match than Isabela and Fenris.)

It's not that having a preference for one gender that's bad, it's that they express interest in only one gender. They don't have to sleep around, or be promiscuous, but even a hint that there's interest there (besides the PC) might be nice once in awhile. Most of the companions in DA2 didn't even admit that they were interested in either gender like Leliana and Zev get to do. (Example: Anders doesn't bring up Karl to f!Hawke. I can understand why he wouldn't, but a lot of fans seemed to take that as 'if f!Hawke is in the universe, then Karl/Anders didn't happen.') But a lot of this has been covered in the 'unfortunate romance tropes' thread. I dunno it's a careful line to walk, and while I have loved and enjoyed many of Bioware's titles, I still think that there's room for improvement when it comes to bisexual representation.

I really don't see Nicolas Cage in him either but that's better than when people compare him to Nosferatu which is very mean. <_<

Ugh... can't unsee now... (but yes, that's mean to say)

Spoiler

Really? I thought their relationship was more like a big sister looking out for the clueless younger one.

But yeah, not a fan of the bi love interests showing a preference for any gender.

I think there would be a large power imbalance between Isabela and Merrill.

That's certainly a valid interpretation of their relationship, but I could have easily seen it as being something more. Merrill's not as clueless as everyone makes her out to be, nor as innocent, after all  IDK I love their mutual appreciation society that they have going on, and how kind they are towards each other, and how protective Isa is of Merrill, and how much they respect each other. Also I would think Merrill would be more open to a poly or open relationship. Isa gets more upset of the two if you romance both of them, for instance. In any event, Isabela is one of the few characters to treat Merrill with any kind of respect--and that includes Hawke. She doesn't patronize her, or talk-down to her, and actually respects her choices, even if she may not agree with them--she decides that supporting Merrill is more important than taking a stand on whether or not blood magic is wrong.

Isabela and Merrill, nah I'd never pair em, they strike me more as sister like friends, similar to Fang and Vanille in FF13, just too cutesy in my eyes. :P And fair points, the whole issue of bi-erasure is something I'm not overly familiar with, interesting though. Kinda a tug of war for you folk in the middle ground of the sexual spectrum there ain't it, how do you put up with us from both sides?  ;)

It stinks. *shrugs* (Also I'm p sure that Fang/Vanille is one of the most popular FF13 pairings and I kinda ship that one too lol)

It's not just male players.  Most female characters would not feel comfortable shacking up with a guy with an  history of being with another guy.

Let me put a token on my 'biphobic bingo' card.

(I honestly can't tell if you mean female players, or female characters? Because sexuality is supposed to be less of a deal in Thedas. Even if it doesn't always read like that.)

That's a good one too.

Like I can see why people see them as sisters, but I also think the fandom at large doesn't look past the superficial enough with Merrill. It's very easy to treat her as a silly, naive little girl, but she's actually much more complex than people give her credit for.

I have a lot of DA2 feels okay? It's my fave. And I love all the characters and all their flaws.

I'm seriously thinking about finding out about the last two LIs and the specializations in november... The achievements thread is torturing me  :crying:  I keep going back to the front page of the scuttlebutt section  ... I cannot imagine what the next four months can be like if I don't allow myself to open completely to spoilers  :crying:  On the other hand, I'm super hyped with the game and I feel like reading and talking about it all the time... why do people leak things, why?  :crying:  :crying:  :crying:

I see your point. And in any case, they had a very sweet relationship! It was kind of refreshing that for once it was the females of the group who got along and the males who kept bitching.

Ain't gonna kill ya for that we're all fans here. ;)  Although I didn't like DA2 myself, but I'm not gonna get into that here, lets keep this train rolling. :P

I like Merrill, I think I tried her romance at one point, it's been so long since I played this game tho, my memory is rusty as hell.

Opinion seems to be split pretty evenly between 'legit' and 'easily faked with what we know'
