I know people are tired of hearing about the downgraded visuals of The Witcher 3, but an anonymous developer explained the reason(s) behind it and why PC version was affected as well.

http://whatifgaming....s-taken-out-why

It's an unfortunate compromise made worse by the fact they won't admit it. Still, I don't mind a downgrade so long as the game's good. DXHR was a bit behind the times when it released and I loved it.

Broche!

And with normal looking eyes, this time! Really helps his rugged allure.

As for the visual downgrade, do some of these people realize that not everyone sports dual Titans or somesuch? Even Inquisition didn't run too well on many PCs (not just due to poor optimization), TW3 will certainly look even better and that has hardware cost no matter how good the developper is, and they want people to actually be able to run the damn thing. And I doubt a company that has attained the size of CDPR can afford to pump loads of cash into cutting edge visual assets and optimization for the 1% of PC gamers that have top of the line hardware, no matter what Totalbiscuit says.

I mean, I do think promoting the game with amazing effects that are not present in the final product is not good PR at all, but I suppose it's just a reality of game development. I wish CDPR hadn't done that, but I understand why they did.

Wow Patrick K. Mills (Alpha Protocol) actually worked on Witcher 3. This guy is awsome.

Some quotes:
"I thought the exact same FC3/4 thing when that trailer marketing-talked about it. Find a village with a PoI marker on the map, clear the scripted monster squad that was hand placed there, get a Bethesda-esque "Jonestown Cleared" and next time you're there some NPCs are walking around. Maybe several boxes around town to donate money to in order to upgrade the shops/town.

But you're telling me you fuckers put actual effort and quality into these? Dude.
.."

"We have that thing you are describing, but we also have lots of other stuff. I think we do a good, but not perfect, job of not making our living world feel like an ubi theme park."

"Does your company know you're admitting imperfections/fault?

Seriously, it must be nice to not have a muzzle agreement beyond the standard NDA.
"

"I don't think I am really doing that, I'm just saying that some of our living world stuff feels a little ubi, other parts don't. I think this is legit the best rpg I've played in a decade.

Edit: I should shut up, though, or this will wind up on kotaku, "witcher Dev says w3 sucks, ubisoft sucks, hates his boss"

"The reviews should start dropping soon, I really am looking forward to seeing what people think. I've been working on this thing for a while now and I can say that I'm immensely proud of what we've done and I really think it's the best thing I've ever worked on. I hope you guys (not just ya'll, but the general audience as well) enjoy it as much as I think you will"

"There are multiple troll quests in W3, I worked on some of them. If you guys kill those trolls I'm going to ask the mods to ban you."

About downgrade:

"Downgrade" is not a part of the development process, it's entirely made-up by people who have never worked in dev and have no idea how anything actually works. Not speaking specifically of our game, but the thing is that promotional stuff is fake, it's always been fake and will always be fake. But it's not like, completely made up bullshit. It's saying, "Hey, this is what we think the game will look like when it comes out, but obviously we can't show you what it will actually look like, because it's not ****** done yet."

People are taking stuff from *years* before release and getting worked up about downgrade. No, not how it works. Never how it worked, never will work that way. It's not like the movies, where 95% of the movie hasn't even been shot yet, but you've got a couple of scenes or shots that are complete enough to show; a year before a game is released there's *nothing* that can be shown to the general public or even the press. Anytime you are seeing something that far out, that was made for the express purpose of showing it to people. There is no downgrade.

I'm not speaking specifically of our company, and actually we've done a really really good job of showing things that *are* representative of the finished product.

Though I'm super glad that people are excited enough about this game to get worked up over VFX on reddit or whatever. The game is awesome, it looks awesome, you'll ****** love it."

I don't care much about the ultra graphics and I'm a PC gamer. Give me good story, good combat, good framerates, moddability and decent graphics...& I'm happy...

The thing is, that probably could have helped with spreading word of the game rather well. We all know about the Crysis series, not because of it's gameplay or story, but by how beautiful the game was and how, at the time, barely anybody could run.

I hardly think "YOU PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO RUN THIS" is a very effective phrase to market a game with. And it's not as if the game now looks bad by any standards, unless your standards are quite frankly ridiculous.

I hate the whole visual downgrade issue.  The game looks wonderful, plus - I won't get less immersed if the game doesn't look what it did during that 2013.  That's fine.  I'm in it for the whole story arc/political aspect and character development that we're going to witness.  Sure, it sucks that **** like this happens, but it happens, the game is trying to be more than just "pretty" to the eyes.

Not surprised that there ended up being a downgrade, the first images just looked too good to be true and possible to create a stable game with. Sure wish they hadn't gone out with amazing stuff like that which make the images later down the line look "worse" even if they still are very impressive. It's still going to be a game that will push a lot of peoples hardware and the people at CDP has probably learned a ton from this and will be able to utilize it to make future titles look even better.

And Crysis 1 (the only game in the series that truly brought PCs to their knees at release) sold worse than anticipated because, as it turns out, ''you're too much of a peasant to run it'' isn't actually a great way to bring about many customers. There are a wide variety of PCs on the market, and you need to develop for those PCs before the 2 000$ custom made monster rigs. Johnny Average with his 900-1000$ machine rightfully doesn't care about how great the game looks on a machine he can't afford or doesn't want to buy.

It's not like the game looks bad by any stretch of the imagination. It will certainly be one of the best looking games on PC, if not THE best until something like Star Citizen comes out. It's not like Watch Dogs where the previews showed you awesome and the actual game was only above average.

Wow. Where is the link for this?

I call BS on his downgrade talk. I know many gamers have been *Edited* to CDPR about it, hounding them to no end, but CDPR's ridiculous parity talk has made matters worse, and as I see it the game really does not look as good as the early promo vids. If there's a chance it won't look that good because you're eventually, I don't know,  going multiplat...then DON'T *Edited* show speculative materials. That's what they did for TW2 and there was no issue, because the game just got progressively prettier. Basically it's bullshots, and CDPR shouldn't take part in it. The latest ultra IGN gameplay on youtube made me cry it looked so average.

Everything changes on the back end just before a game is finished anyways, if somebody is saying graphics are final a year ahead of release they're lying - that's just not how games are made.

To be fair, developers don't help when they proudly unveil their, shiny, visually amazing game then tone the graphics down as time goes without saying anything. I'd have kinda expected CDPR to just be upfront about the fact that they wouldn't devote so many ressources for quality setting that a fraction of PC gamers would enjoy, and that no console player could ever see.

BUt them, I suppose the outrage would have been even greater. People always talk about how they want honest, up-front talk until what they hear doesn't satisfy them.

Point me another open world RPG that looks better and I'll start complaining about downgrades. Everything I've seen from this game screams ambition, it's just that they were too ambitious with the graphics when limited power of consoles are holding them back.

Ok question for the nerds, can my computer run this game? My guess is no...

I have an

Arkham Knight, Division. Yeah, this 'target render' reveal crap stepped up with next gen, and it has to stop. Has anyone else notice that? The BS factor in PR went through the roof with next gen. No author sells a book on, "well, i was was going for Hemingway, but you just might get Stephanie Meyers."

Why? CDPR is all about the lip-service to the PC gamers while making substantial changes to make the game compatible with consoles. The RED engine shift was all about making a game engine that could be translatable to consoles.

True, CDPR is a redoubtable PR machine. But it seems there's no spinning around the downgrade.

They spun their way out of the expansion pass (didn't they?). I wouldn't be surprised if they work their way out of this one too.

Honestly, I really like the TW series. I think their games are great. But I find CDPR's rhetoric so very grating. From their potshots at other developers to their self-congratulatory praise - it's all too much for me.

Sorry, but nope. Your CPU, GPU and RAM are all below the minimum unfortunately.
