Okay question for the book readers: What exactly is Yennifer like? I mean what's her personality like? Her traits, strengths and flaws.

As I've only TW2 I know almost nothing about her. All I've got to go on her is what Letho said about her and according to him she was kinda bitchy.

I wonder how required GOG registration for physical copies to be able to download patches and DLC is DRM-free approach. Another kidney shot. And shot in the foot for CDP.

How is registering the game on GOG a DRM?

GOG is a DRM - free platform...

And this registration is necessary only for the first batch of retail copies. It was necassary - if they didn't do this, game would have been be on torrents for a week now.

Now that would be unfair as hell to actual fans and people who buy the game legally.

Having read only a few books: she is.  She's prideful, bitter, sometimes manipulative, and occasionally possessive.  Apparently some of that comes from her origins.  Unlike Triss, who's appearance is mostly natural as i understand it, Yennefer's beauty comes from spells used to change her body after she learned magic.  She was an ugly hunchback and abused as you might expect beforehand.

All that being said, she really does care about Geralt and Ciri, going to great lengths for their sake.

This will be the last depressing post and we can get back to talking about the good bits.

They weren't kidding when they said all platforms will be the same. I can't think of a mulitplat game in the last 5 years that gimped PC this bad. I mean, even console-centric games like GTA and Asscreed offer a substantial visual difference between the platforms.

Alright, someone talk about how cute Ciri is or something so we can put this sh*t behind us, lol. Story! It's about the story!

The comment section for that youtube video was gold just for this post:

"CDPR won't last long. They betrayed the ones that made them what they are today. Now they are Sony and MS bitches. I'm uninstalling gog galaxy, i won't ever again buy anything CDPR related. We don't need you, everyday a better dev team appears on pc gaming. CDPR will have the same fate as Crytek."

Triss used magic to remove burn scars, but she had been a mage for awhile before she was severely burned. (Battle of Sodden Hill)

Not sure about about her origins, other than it being said that all the sorceresses use magic to alter their appearance. It's why thy are all beautiful.

Yeah I'm thinking of going with Triss at this point. Not being a book reader I've got no real investment in Yennifer at all.

The criticism CDPR is getting will have it's effect I feel. CDPR won't do this kind of **** again I hope.

You may mock the people making YT comments like that but the effect is already felt.

If it wasn't they wouldn't feel the need to ban people from their forums.

It really seems to me that, rather than severely downgrade PC graphics, they just managed to squeeze a lot of juice out of the consoles. Apart from The Order on PS4, which was 24 FPS and on rails, I've never seen a better looking console game (from what I saw of videos). And the PC version looks freaking great. Maybe I'm just an untrained eye because I have a mid-range PC, but from the screenshots I saw the game looks phenomenal in places.

Also this whole ''controversy'' reminds me why I sometimes hate some PC player's elitism. I play on PC, as in, I literally own no console newer than a N64. And I'm really sick of tired of a subset of PC players being prima donnas because they don't get to be super special snowflakes with the best of the best graphics all the time, just for them. Cutting edge graphics have a cost in time, money and post-release support (drivers, optimization, etc.). Expecting a developper to invest all that just to satisfy the small subset of players who have the hardware to run that stuff is a bit silly. Not to mention that, at absolute max settings including Nvidia effetcs and improved hair, the game apparently brings even the best of setups below 60 FPS. Consoles aren't the only platforms with hardware limits.

I just hope this doesn't become the one big issue that the vocal minority can latch on in order to tank the game's public reception.

From what others have said on the forum she's apparently like Triss in TW1?

Normally I would agree with you. But I think in this case CDPR invited the more vocal and hyperbole inclined corners of the internet with the way the company marketed itself. If those same fans now turn on them, well, there's that old saying about laying in beds you've made.

Yeah, but there were other references to her having allergic reactions to magic cast upon herself, so I was given the impression her changes were minimal.

She was severely burned at Sodden Hill. It is why she was mistakenly reported as being among the mages who died in the battle. She was so badly burned that no one could recognize her, and the only survivor who could (Yennefer) had been blinded in the same battle. Although in the books at least it appears she wasn't fully restored by magic.

'They used the highest magics on us,' she continued in a muted voice, 'spells, elixirs, amulets and artefacts. Nothing was left wanting for the wounded heroes of the Hill. We were cured, patched up, our former appearances returned to us, our hair and sight restored. You can hardly see the marks. But I will never wear a plunging neckline again, Geralt. Never.'

It's originally from the PC Gamer site I think (German):

That front picture of that earlier video seems to resemble the footage in the German one that shows minimum and maximum detail on the PC.

Computec (a German publisher) has a PS4 site (Play4), but that one shows exactly this one video. I am not sure how long that 'removed' video is, but the above video shows significant differences (for instance, note the forested mountain slopes when Geralt looks out from Kaer Morhen).

Also, the game on 4K and ultra settings (minus hairworks, except near the end). The GPU is a GTX Titan X.

This is actually pretty darn impressive, the game running on a single Titan. If you don't understand German: The commentators are pretty much blown away. Pity about the loss of detail in the video, though (I watched it on 1440p).

All I can say PC gamers. Have faith in the modders. They have done wonders for games such as Skyrim. If you want to wait it out until modders get a hold of this game. Then so be it. As for this hurting CD. It will prob hurt their rep among PC gamers. They will more than makeup for whatever they lose in PC players by making them up in the addition of console players.

And I'm guessing they only did that because of how severe her injuries were, because in the books its said that she can't drink magical potions without adverse reaction and avoids casting magic on herself.

No idea how anyone can look at that and say the game doesn't look amazing. The sunset at the 2 minute mark in particular is breathtaking.

What people are saying is that it doesn't look as good as it did in past trailers/demos. You think that 2 min mark is impressive then watch THIS:

or THIS:

Makes that video you linked seem like nothing. When one of my friends saw this trailer he was gobsmacked, and he's a video game artist.

They do look even more amazing, but to be honest, those are so far ahead of the current market I never really believed the final game would look like that.

Because let's not forget, no game developper has the magic formula that allows them to make a game that looks so much better than everything else, and still manage to have it run on anything but the highest end of PCs without costing loads of cash in extra time for optimization. Hell for what we know, the graphics in those trailers are basically impossible to attain (and maintain 60+ FPS on on 4K resolution) with commercially available hardware unless perhaps you optimize around it alone, which means you invest tons of money to placate, what, 1% of the PC gaming market at best?

I do believe that they shouldn't have shown that footage if they weren't sure they could put it in the final product. But that's IMO unworthy of the outrage that has erupted over this. We went from ''so visually advanced only a NASA supercomputer could play it'' to just ''among the best looking game on the market''. It's a downgrade, but let's keep things in perspective.

Unrelated to the current graphics discussion but every time i browse this thread i notice people talking about not being book readers. I'd assume it's already been said but if you go here:

http://witcher.wikia.../Witcher_series

You can read details and plot of many short stories and the books themselves all in English. It doesn't take a long time to read it all, less time than it would have took to read just one book. You can get more info about Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri and feel more of a connection to them in a sense. Start with The Last Wish (which has a bunch of short stories inside of it) and move down the list to The Lady of the Lake

That is quite correct, but every company has people that complain about the graphical display of the games they release.  They either don't live up to the early videos and screenshots because of probably additional systems were added that would have increased the hardware requirements or it looks "old".  Its why I am really appreciating the developers are that waiting to show their games and using the game's engine itself to demonstrate what is there.

For me I am going to take a wait and see approach with the game, for I really had a strong dislike for the combat in the first two games and want to see more and hopefully experience it for myself first before making a financial commitment.

Wow...

Source. Has a great review up of the day 1 patch version has footage of gameplay too plus a bunch of screenshots like these. A dev on cdpr forum said it is the same version as the thirty five minute trailer.

I was never convinced that the final game would look like the VGX/Sword of Destiny trailers, even when they first came out. From the lack of HUD, the overly "cinematic" and dynamic third person cameras, crazy amounts of lighting/shadows, just the sheer level of detail in each scene, etc., it resembled pre-rendered cgi more than anything. I'm not even sure if they have a working build at that point at E3 2013 (though I do remember a closed-door event for some journalists which was kept on the hush hush).

What I am really bummed on is that the 35 minute "Gameplay" video is now a pipe-dream. It was a whole half hour long and it came out in August 2014. It may not reach the Sword of Destiny graphics level, but damn did it look glorious(DAT Novigrad). THAT was the product that I was expecting on my laps in March 2015 (this was before the final delay to May, i believe). Fast forward to less than a year later, and that atmosphere is just....gone, with world clutter, foliage, and NPCs noticeably cut down, and a lighting system overhaul that is strangely flat and harsh and paints a layer of mustard yellow over everything.

Platform parity is a thing now for CDPR, but the real gem of the fiasco was of course CDPR's PR doublespeak and refusal to acknowledge or clarify. I held them to a higher standard than that, and that was my mistake. Lesson learned, I guess. Pre-order for me has now truly been taken out to the woodshed, and extra precautions should be taken for any future trailers (looking at Cyberpunk 2077 here).

On a more encouraging note, CDPR seems to be very receptive to mods, and have mentioned that they would like to release a modkit soon after the game's release. Always has that to look forward to.

p.s. I recall a minor ruckus made (mainly on the CDPR forums) when the 35 minute gameplay video was released, about the downgrade from VGX/SoD. Quite amusing when taken in perspective of the final product we're getting.
