I can't believe people are even done.  I am only now entering Oxenfurt to get that creep Junior!

I know, right? I'm playing since the premiere and I'm only at Skellige. But maybe I'm focusing too much on the side quests. I'm really curious about the main plot, but the other activitiessssss... it would be a shame to just skip them.

I only completed it this early because

1: Life stuff. I have plenty of time to play at the moment.

2: I got swept up into the Main Story that I forgot about all the side quests. And when you're just doing the Main story stuff in a game, it does speed things up. But not this time!

Well I am hoping to get a chance to go back to Velen to do more stuff there (places of power, contracts) as I've been doing nothing but Novigrad business for several days now and I don't want to do too much of the main story and ignore some of the side-quest fun. I'll get a lot of playing time this weekend when I am off work.

I still got a way to go as well. I'm a completionist so I've been doing a ton of side quests.

Unlike DA:I though it rarely feels like a chore. Sometimes all those question marks can be overwhelming though!

I am taking my time on my 2nd playthrough. I started it last Sunday and haven't even started the Novigrad portion of the story.

Logged around 85 hours on first play through. I believe I did most of the treasure hunts, contracts and the side quests apart from some bits and pieces that popped up when I had initially explored an area (no i don't really want to do a side quest while in the middle of the main story line, nearing the end of the game itself, looking at you Novigrad). Think I will take a break for a while, or even until the DLC is released.

Overall impression: I enjoyed it so much I could not put it down for nearly a whole week, was just lucky I didn't need to do anything in real life  :P Story was excellent. Only have a couple of gripes; the combat, I found it difficult to parry enemies on the PC version, dont know how it is for consoles. The characters and plot; nothing wrong with them, only that I am not very familiar with the Witcher's lore, having only played a small percentage of the Wicther 2 so I was slightly unsure what exactly was occurring at times, and who meant what to Geralt. Decided to go with the Yen romance since it seemed cannon (could be wrong of course.) and some of the UI elements were a bit tricky; such as trying to loot when swimming. Other then that, I can happily call it my new favorite game.

So my question is now, should I read the books? Not heard much about them other than their origin and author. Are they translated well?

Yeah i usually like to beat the story first and then do a new playthrough where i do it all. Ofc in the beginning i always try to do as much content as possible, but in this game the main story just got so good i couldn't stop. Which just makes me like the game more. I haven't really done that much at Skellige though, it was abit overwhelming after Velen. To many questionmarks.

^ Yeah that was how I was with Skellige. As soon as I arrived, I hunted down the Ursine gear, then did the main story there, forgot about the side quests.

I still had quite a few in Novigrad and a lot of Notice Boards in Velen left un marked.

Not this time!

I got a feeling I'll do the same. I'm getting too curious about the main story, but I don't know if I'll finish it with my current level and I'm playing on the third difficulty level. Lvl 22 is too low, I assume?

Let me guess, you're one of those people that has never played the previous games and thought Wild Hunt would make a good entry point regardless?

I'm done with the main quest chain, but by my best guess I'm only half way done with all the witcher contracts and side quests and havent done any sunken treasure dives in Skellige. I will though because I've loved all the side quests in Velen!

No level 22 should do fine. The main quest gives alot of xp. I was about the same level and i ended up at 35 or so when i was finished, and i never felt underleveled. But then again if you are happy with exploring and doing your thing, you should. Its not like the end is going somewhere, you can go get it anytime you want.

22 is a bit low depending on where in the chain you are and how many places of power attribute points you've picked up.  I've noticed this game does push you to use the bestiary and use the correct oils/potions for your tasks, also track down all the plans for the witcher gear you will need, that helps a ton. Bear is heavy, Cat is light and Gryphon is medium. I went bear myself but depending on your build the others will work just as well. I only planed ahead for about 35-40% of the fights in the first 2 Witcher games. This 3rd game pushes the need for planing up a lot.

Okay, thanks for the answers. I'm still not sure if I will rush with main story, but if so, I'll level up some more, just to be sure. :)

I kind of wish Ciri was still a child in this game. Granted they would of had to change a tonne, so I'm glad they didn't go this way.

Remembering the prologue with her as a child, she was incredibly adorable, and I think her appearance design was top notch.

I'd of been quite happy with just Kaer Morhen lol. To me, Kaer Morhen is like Tython in Swtor. I can re-live it over and over again, but it just remains as beautiful as if I was there for the first time.

Also, after careful examination, Geralt HAS concluded

Stumbled across this vid. Might be useful to those who haven't completed the game yet and aren't sure what Witcher armor set you want to aim for yet.

Mastercrafted Ursine for me...

Mastercrafted Ursine is easily one of the best looking armor sets I've ever seen. Looks practical while simultaneously having a crazy badass factor.

I was kinda hoping I'd eventually come across more upgrade schematics for the starter armor that I've kept carrying around with me, but I suppose I should just sell it at this point. It is a bit weird that there's a bunch of armor sets from other schools available in the game, but not from Geralt's own school.

Ursine is love, ursine is life.

Also helps that the Bear School sounds incredibly badass.

Where do you get the Ursine armor btw? I got the enhanced diagrams at level 10 or something ,but never found the original.

So my question is now, should I read the books? Not heard much about them other than their origin and author. Are they translated well?

I really like the books so far, I'm about half way into 'Times of Contempt' and you appreciate the game's story so much more for knowing the books. Dandelion is significantly smarter and funnier in the books too. If CDPR could do one thing different it should be to take more of a cue in how to write Dandelion from the books.  Dudu also is a very good character in the books. If I hadn't read his story I'm not sure I would care about his character in the game as much.

The order you should read them in is below. and from what I've seen from people's reaction is that Witcher 3 is more a follow up to the books than to the first 2 games and even only being half way into the book series I definitely agree with that statement.

    The Last Wish
    The Sword of Destiny
    Blood of Elves
    Times of Contempt
    Baptism by Fire
    The Tower of Swallows
    The Lady of the Lake

I thought the same thing about Geralt's starting armor. Considering it was all over the advertising you'd think that would be the upgradeable Wolf school set.
