Another thing I just realized makes absolutely no sense to me regarding a lot of the endings:

if Ciri survives the White Frost... how does she even get back? It clearly shows the portal closing and Geralt looking sad implying "Point of no return, Ciri made her choice and is gone for good". Then it just cops out and shows her alive in the world of the Aen Seide but with no explanation? Apparently there's an official guide for the game in which it says "if Ciri's resolve is strong enough she survives. If not, she dies".

 

Wow. So love conquers evil. What happened CDPR? I really think they ran out of budget or stopped caring when they were developing the final bit of the story.

 

 

Being a dane who semi-regularly sees foreign stuff like French, Spanish and American movies, that's not the vibe I got from TW1 or TW2's polish dub, at all, lol.

 

 

Interesting. I've no problem branching out when need be for various foreign art forms, be it anime, film or games. And I'm a red-blooded supposedly closed minded Murican.

No, Witcher 1 is a good game, by all means. It's just kind of unappealing and off-putting in many ways. I still whole-heartedly spent 50 hours on it and felt like it had a very epic conclusion and tons of memorable characters and quests throughout.

I may need to see W1's polish for myself, but TW2, I clearly remember being very poorly done in polish from how it sounded to me. (what do I know?)

It's strange how some people here are trying to portray Witcher 1 as a bad or mediocre game.

The enhanced edition has a metascore of 86%  and userscore of 8.5.

In comparison Dragon Age Inqusition also has a metascore of 86% (85% xbox, 85% pc, 89 ps4=86,3%) and userscore of 6,7 (7.4 ps4, 5.8 pc, 6.9 xbox)

 

Though I agree that the gameplay takes getting used to and is mediocre at best and distracting at worst. I would try it (it's often on steam/gog sales for 1-2$) out and if you can't get along with the combat I would watch a let's play, but you will miss a lot of the great atmosphere.

 

If gameplay isn't really the most pivotal thing in your enjoyment of games then TW1 is fine.

 

I certainly had fun slicing and dicing stuff. It's no where near the levels of 'unplayable' as some people like to put it.

 

The Witcher 1 is a great game, the Witcher 2 is even better. So far I'm enjoying the Witcher 3 a lot.

 

Go play all three, I'm not guaranteeing you the perfect game for the Witcher 1, but I'm not going to say it's flat-out garbage. Remember that TW1 was produced through the NWN engine and by a small developer at the time. It's not going to be on TW2/3's levels at all.

 

Besides claims like these

 

Witcher 1 has the worst writing, dialogue, and voice acting I've ever seen in a game

 

Are pretty silly when you have legends like Thaler and Foltest himself around. It's a great introduction to the world and you get a good grasp at the feel of the game. 

 

Plus the charm of an indie game is all there; lmao @ four NPCs looking the same and not to mention the OST is still my favourite.

Crach an Craite is a very nice guy and all, a breath of fresh air in the Witcher world where all other rulers seem contractually obligated to be assholes, but...

... while Winter's Blade is a decent sword, it's not nearly as amazing in quality as it is in legend. More importantly, given that it's a steel sword, it's about as useful as a pebble against the Wild Hunt. So yeah, thanks buddy, but you might as well have left the sword to gather dust for all the difference it will make.

Just reached Skellige on my 2nd playthrought and damn... Yen looks so hot in her alternative costume that I'm thinking about changing it back to her default one because it's distracting

I'm not a fan of how she treats Geralt, but damn it if it didn't break my heart a little to turn her down there. Gotta stick with Triss now that I had Geralt profess his love for her earlier and even planning to settle down in some remote village.

If you see where the buzz about Witcher 3 being racist comes from, you'll find most of the people actually pushing it are white Americans with zero sense of perspective or historical context outside of their own country.

 

So what's people's opinions on the combat, general gameplay and quest design? A lot of people have given the impression that W3 is full of feels but how does it work as an open world game? I've refrained from buying the game so far since I'm on an AMD card and even on GOG, the game is like $90. But I'd like to know what I'm getting into if I do plan on buying it eventually.

They're bunch of creepy gits who are obsessed with race that's why. Going through the motions acting progressive without even acknowledging what the author is intending to do. People are super hyper these days that they won't let anything pass without accusing someone of being 'racists' or 'sexist'. There's a reason why things like Monty Python will never be made today, due to political correctness.

 

People even complained about Resident Evil 5 being racist due to you killing African zombies. Dismissing the fact they are in, you know, freaking Africa.

 

Witcher 3 is based in medieval Poland (1000s-ish) with elements of Polish and bits of Gaelic/Celtic/Nordic mythology. It would be pretty strange to see an asian guy worshiping Freya in the middle of Skellige without anyone pointing out that he isn't from around there. Doesn't help that the writers are Polish themselves. As with any reasonable writer, they will write what they know, not what they think they know.

 

Speaking of asian people, no one really complained about Sleeping Dogs being overwhelmingly filled with east Chinese people, despite it being set in modern days where diversity is more common.

 

I get mad at times, but I don't think it's worth wasting time on these thickies.

Quest design is like nothing we had in years. Its so good you live the tale, not main quests and side quests. I do notk now how the language was translated but in original I must praise it highly. All the nuances make you more invested in the story.

The world sucked me in wanting explore everything around; just another look over that hill, just this ravine over there, ok, only this cave and Im done, I promise... not.

Combat is solid, has its up and down sides, but its solid.

Alchemy and crafting are actually fun for me.

General gameplay, overall, I would call satisfying. If not better .

Might be the case for BioWare, but I think CD Projekt RED will stick to their guns. They seem to know how to pick their feedback in order to improve on their vision. Rockstar is similar, to a lesser extent.

I don't think so. In practice, a little dose of tokenism is usually enough to silence most of the criticism; that is basically what BioWare did in DA:I (put in a few black NPC's, expand and / or modify the lore a bit and presto! Done, and we're still just as far away from non-Euramerican inspired fantasy as before).
I don't think CDPR will do more than just put in a Zerrikanian NPC (maybe two) in future DLC. It fits the setting and defangs most of the criticism and that's about it. Most people (whether white or not) seem to be willing to accept that it's a very specific game in terms of regional and cultural origin and inspirational basis, so CDPR might even just ignore it all.

It's just ridiculous how these (mostly) american sjw are trying to force their american-centric view on the whole world

 

I'm german and playing games since about 18 years. I can't think of a single german video game character written by a american developer, who was not portrayed as an evil nazi.

Russians are usually portrayed as backward people who try to destroy America

Chinese are portrayed as sneaky people who try to take over America

Arabians are portayed as fanatics or terrorists.

Big parts of the american video game industry has such a stereotypical and racist view on other nationalities that maybe, just maybe polygon, tumblr and all the other sjw clowns should start criticizing this before lecturing others how to portay peolple of different origins. The hypocrisy is so strong with this people, that anything else than completely ignoring or responding with "if you don't like our games then plough yourself and don't play them. " would give them credit they don't deserve,

But hey at least every game made by an american developer has a 30% quote of black people.That makes them progressive and inclusive so now let's try to force every non- american developer to do the same. Even if it wouldn't make any sense in the chosen setting.

 

PS: I know that this comes from a very small but loud minority of Americans and I don't meant to generalize all Americans.

Ummm, that sounds very anti-SJW to me though. I don't have a problem with that. I think Germans always becoming evil nazis or evil scientists is akin to Bioware (in the past) always making fun of transgenders rather than representing them fairly. It's all stupid but here's what I don't like:

 

I don't like that, because of backlash towards these things developers become too afraid to do something they would really believe in, and instead of going with their usual view of germans as evil nazis or russions as backwards people who wants to destroy America, they start representing them in a very people-pleasing way.

 

To me all of this is about creator authenticity and integrity. If you start pandering then you are losing your authenticity. I couldn't care less what I think or what other people think. To me it only matters what the author thinks and how his work is representative of his/her expression. It's about being honest and not caring about political correctness getting in the way of a point you're trying to make.

Regarding the whole gamer gate turn the thread took, I do find it somewhat amusing that here Europeans are bashing Americans for attempting to force liberal values on them, when usually European anti-Americanism is focused on bashing Americans for not being liberal enough. What a twist.
