So what happened to Aedirn? I defended Vergen and saved Saskia. Shouldn't they be in the war against Radovid? Didn't Emhyr once promise the Elves their own kingdom? Shouldn't he get them on his side?

I know the writers said "we don't want to dabble that much in politics this time" but methinks they were afraid to do it and deliberately toned it down because as you can see with Radovid and Emhyr and stuff, they can't do it as well without their talent which left after Witcher 2. I contacted another guy listed as a senior writer for Witcher 2 on twitter and he responded he hasn't worked at CDPR since Witcher 2, and then the driving force of Sebastian Stepien gone too (to work on Cyberpunk according to Wikipedia) I think that's why the political focus is both absent and lacking in this game.
But again, I thought the rest of the plot was quite good, but it's a shame it falls apart in act 3. There's an excellent write-up about why act 3 is lacklustre over at CDPR's official Witcher 3 forum btw. Check it out.
Topic at CDPR Forum: "Why the main narrative in the last third of the game is a bad hot mess [major spoilers!!!]"

I think you meant Upper Aedirn, right? Upper Aedirn (if you went with Iorveth) gained their independence from Aedirn, they are separeted kingdoms. So what happened to Aedirn? I defended Vergen and saved Saskia. Shouldn't they be in the war against Radovid? Didn't Emhyr once promise the Elves their own kingdom? Shouldn't he get them on his side?
Upper Aedirn was rolfstomped by Nilfgaard, it doesnt exist anymore.
He already gave a kingdom for the elves, its called Dol Bathanna and is ruled by Francesca Findabair. Emhyr betrayed the Scoiatel who helped him in the war against the North, he sold them to the northern leaders so I doubt they want to help him.

Some details on how much Witcher 3 might have cost to make.
Back in 2013, CDProjekt disclosed that their rough budget estimate for the game was going to be $40M. $15M development, $25M marketing.
There have been delays and the company needed the Cyberpunk team to help out with the production, so it naturally went up.
On a Polish site today, they revealed that the actual development costs were 120 million PLN, which is roughly $32M, and $35M was used for marketing. So that's $67M
For comparison's sake, Skyrim's budget was 85 million dollars.
So, in the end Witcher 3 was made with less money than Skyrim, but had more work hours poured into it because of how cheap labour is in Poland

For me I enjoyed the Witcher 3 story more than Witcher 2. I was very interested in Witcher 3 story right from the start. Whereas the Witcher 2 at no point was I in hurry to see what would happen next. It just never really peak my interest at any point.

So, I finished the entire "Ladies of the Forest" arc this morning.
I made the wrong decisions and now I feel terrible. That had to be one of the most depressing and messed up quest lines I have ever played. I knew I should have trusted my intuition, but I didn't for whatever reason.

I'd say TW2 had the more interesting plot, but I give the edge to TW3 as well because I was more invested in it, and all the characters in it.
TW2 is a great story, but I always found it to be a bit of a dry one. TW3 is much better in that regard.

Yeah, had TW3 been made in Europe or North America it would very probably have rivaled the cost of any AAA game to make. It's highly obvious there's an absurd amount of work put into the game. It's probable that CDPR can afford to take so much time in the first place only beause a significant portion of their fanbase live in regions with more robust currencies than Poland. Well, that and GoG backing them up.

Nilfgaard has advanced to parts of Kaedwen, all of Aedirn is under their control. I don't think this makes Iorveth and Saskia's cause in vain though, since the lodge of sorceresses were scheming to make Upper Aedirn their puppet state and the other kingdoms were highly opposed to the rebellion. Besides, even Iorveth mentioned he was tired of guerilla warfare and wanted a state where humans and non-humans could live in peace, and since non-humans in Nilfgaard don't suffer oppression like in the northern realms, he got some of his wishes granted.

I do think TW2 has the edge completely when it comes to the plot (I know plot is driven by character motivations but...) but I agree that I was much more invested in TW3 and I felt sadder when it was over because it's final but mostly because the characters really touched my heart this time.
Yes. She shows up no matter what.
What? Does that even make any sense?

Well she can teleport anywhere she wants. I think the bigger issue with that is why the **** all the mages didn't just teleport out of Novigrad. Is that ever explained?

Or how they don't just roflstomp the Witch Hunters, given that these are just random thugs with swords while the mages are, well, mages. Triss alone can conjure up fiery blasts of doom at Kaer Morhen, surely she's not the only halfway competent magic user of the bunch?
I mean, it makes sense in Dragon Age because the Templars are equipped to deal with magic users. The Witch Hunters of Novigrad clearly aren't, and it seems that top-tier wizards in the Witcherverse are very, very powerful.

Yeah, mage hunters are just mooks on a power trip who ****** and **** themselves against an actual mage. I think most of them join assuming they'll just be bullying herbalists and alchemists. No one who's actually powerful. I think at one point they're using fake Dimeritium handcuffs.

I guess they established that not all magic users are on SSJ-Triss level.
