I guess they established that not all magic users are on SSJ-Triss level.

I get that, but there doesn't seem to be much of a divide (in TW3) between the Triss and Yen level supersorceresses who can face down the Wild Hunt, and the lambda mages who pissed themselves in the cellar of the Passiflora at the thought of some boors with clubs. The Pyres of Novigrad storyline overall just lacked depth, what with it being the poor victim mages vs. the Snidely Whiplash evil Witch Hunters and their smug bastard of a boss (to say nothing of their mad king of a patron). To cite it again, Dragon Age tackled those aspects much better I feel.

I think the issue is more or less that there just aren't enough mages. Any one mage could probably run a guerilla campaign for a while before getting killed, but there's be no return. And a big enough unit of mages would probably just be forced to take on an army they couldn't really beat without running into MAD issues. Do we ever learn the number of mages?

Keep in mind that all the folk getting burned in Novigrad weren't necessarily mages in the strictest sense either. The fanatics were burning all with the faintest hint of magic so herbalists, alchemists, people with mere interest in the craft and people caught with magical paraphernalia were all rounded up.

The actual mages were relatively small in number and I don't think the lore really goes into detail regarding power levels, capabilities and the like but the Lodge are (or were) filled with exceptional Sorceresses who I assume are above the common lot for the most part.

I remember that the Order of the Flaming Rose erected some sort of barrier that greatly suppressed magic in Loc Muinne, something similar could be used in Novigrad. But there aren't that many mages to begin with, and many like Felicia who you see at stake are novices.

Exactly. Most of those burned at stakes are novices. Margarita Luax-Antille says, that (at least after I imported save where Mage Council was established), that witch hunters slaughtered entire Aretuza (school of sorceresses), while Council and Conclave allowed it and even helped Radovid in it, after he gave them political positions at his side.

And Witch Hunters are not exactly weak mooks - they are (at least some of them are) a fighting elite, that Radovid trusts enough to use them as personal bodyguards. They are trained in fighting mages, and often use dwimeritium to supress their abilities.

And not all mages can teleport - it's safe to assume that novices are not powerful enough to do that, and even powerful sorceresses are able to teleport a maximum of themselves+1.

Besides that, just as in Dragon Age (perhaps far more so), not all mages are trained in combat. In fact, most of them are not. Your average mage has never even fought in his life.

They are mostly unwanted children of rich parents, who had a life of luxury and splendor, with everyone dancing to their whims. And suddenly, there are trained people with swords all around them, kicking them in the face and putting dwimeritium handcuffs on their wrists.

I WANT TO BELIEVE!

I'm still hoping they will do an expansion in Dol Blathanna. It was supposed to originally be included in The Witcher 2, but they didn't have time and budget and it was cut out from the game (Act III was supposed to happen there). Game is doing great financially, so maybe we'll get more than those 2 expansions.

Yeah teleportation isn't exactly the first spell that gets taught at Hogwar- I mean Aretuza.

Odd and somewhat suggestive comment, since Aretuza figures in 'Time of Contempt' (1995) which predates the first Harry Potter novel (1997). Ah well...

Where the hell do you find the recipe for White Gull? I haven't bothered with alchemy much, but now I have to be able to make it if I want to upgrade my Ursine Silver Sword to Superior. I've been checking a bunch of innkeeps, merchants and herbalists and haven't seen it. Not even Gremist had it, who I was sure that would have it.

EDIT: LOL nvm, I had the recipe and didn't realize it since I assumed it would be listed under "potions" in the alchemy menu, but there's apparently an "alcohol" category. Now just need to check around some inns for cherry cordial.

I actually picked up the recipe recently.

I sadly don't remember where I got it, but I could have sworn it was from a vendor.....

Second time around, you really notice how Novigrad evolves. I had gotten so accostumed to seeing burning pires and people being questioned and seached at the entrances that the calm came as a shock.

It is THE strongest point of this game. How alive the world feels. I remember the first time I walked into Novigrad it was night. When I enter, I see troupes and bands and people dancing, etc. It really, really felt like when you walk into the nightlife of a city you had never visited before.

Every side character: "Geralt! You are looking for Ciri, are you not?"

Geralt: "Gwent cards, actually."

The stare down the NPC gives you when you ask them for a game of Gwent was a lot more intimidating then the final boss.

Don't bother searching for new cards.

All the DLC did was change the skins of 10 neutral cards. The skins are nice however, but no new cards have been added.

The only rough indicator is when Dijkstra mentions there are several thousand in the Northern Kingdoms, but that's the whole group of mages, herbalists, alchemists etc. broadly defined. Compared to the rest of the population of the Northern Kingdoms this is a tiny fraction; while there are no comprehensive population figures, Novigrad is about the same size as London - then as now the largest city in the British Isles - in circa 1300 AD with its 30,000 people, which suggests overall 1200s-1300s northern European population figures.

That would still be millions and millions of people, with magic users (broadly defined) forming 0.1% or less of the population. Given that the average 'magic user' is probably a two-bit herbalist or a minor alchemist proper mages and sorcerors are even less than that. It's interesting to note that Triss was able to save about 30 and it's reasonable to assume that these are all the remaining magic users (including refugees from Redanian-controlled territory) in Novigrad of at least some (modest) standing out of a population of 30,000.

Really powerful mages may be almost as scarce as witchers...

It would also explain why the witchhunters are mostly bothering ordinary people. Mages are so rare that they rarely catch them, but practitioners of folk magic or people with a few drops of elven blood - that's another matter and that way the witchhunters can still be, erm, productive...

I for one find it wholly consistent with how free DLC has been pitched thus far, but yeah, still crappy.
