And also the appearance of everyone's favorite elf. The game as it is right now seems to have really neutered the characters and plot points of Witcher 2. CDPR is probably working on the expansions right now, but I'm really curious as to whether they're gonna do an enhanced edition that adds considerable new content to Act 3, like they did in Witcher 2, or if they've decided they're too mainstream for that kind of fanservice now.

If there's a witcher game that needs an EE, it's the witcher 3. There are a great number of minor problems that keep it from being as good as it could be.

And done. Clocking in at 79 hours, I did the side-quests that interested me and most of the contracts that I stumbled upon. Explored about 55-60% of the map at first glance, and I'm nowhere near 100% completion I mosly blazed throught the third act in order to see what the story holds. I believe this will be the first Witcher game that I finish twice.

The story is overall very good, but sadly uneven. Skellige is good, the battle for Kaer Morhen is great and the story surrounding the Baron is amazing, but both quest chains in Novigrad plod along. The main quest design is mostly go to point A, cutscene, go to point B, cutscene, but the cutscenes are great so it works well. Ciri's interactions with Geralt are a definite highlight of the game. My only real complaint is the lack of compelling antagonists, save for maybe the Crones. Nothing even approaches Letho. I also feel that main quest doesn,t have quite enough important choices

Side-quests are freaking amazing. Easily the high point of the game, they are highly detailed and polished, often with a choice in it, even in the case of some Contracts. I do think Witcher senses are slightly overused, but that's a minor quibble. Probably the best designed side-quests in any RPG I've seen save maybe for New Vegas and Planescape Torment.

Combat does its job, but little more. I've written on it before and my points stand. Bombs are too limited in supply and slow to use, strong attacks are too slow, oils don't matter that much, and the only SIgns I used are Quen and improved Igni and managed fine on Death March. Just like TW2, the easiest path is pretty much always Quen, attack attack, dodge, Quen, ad nauseum. Even bosses barely require a change of tactics. Thus the combat ends up lacking in variety. The skill system is nice, but mostly just passve bonuses that aren't game changers, and sadly pretty much all equipment is leveled-scaled and generic (including Relic swords) apart from Witcher gear.

Mini-games are also uneven. Gwent is awesome and I love every minute of it. Horse races are very easy and unrewarding. Fist fights are always won by blocking, attack attack, back away, blocking.

Overall, a very good game, best in the Witcher series by a lot, and my favorite game this year, so far at least. I'd say it compares rather evenly with Inquisition, which had worse side-quests and exploration but a more even main quest and better combat mechanics. Mostly, I'm just happy we had three great RPGs (including Pillars of Eternity) from three studios with three design approaches.

Inquisition is no where near TW3 regarding to overall quest design, character development and pacing. overall TW3 is the best RPG in this decade.

Just got to the drinkint part at Kaer Morhen. Honestly, I haven't laughed this hard for a long while. Enjoyed every minute of it! :D

Lost it when Lambert said they should get some sourceresses and Geralt went all "Lambert, you are a genious!"

Yeah, my stomach hurt.

I agree on many points

I feel like the Wild Hunt were pretty bad antagonists after Letho, reminded me actually of Bioware antagonists (Cory especially), just way too generic

My other main complaint would be the rushed Act 3 and the lack of meaningful Save Import (TW2 decisions don't matter at all)

BUT I don't think DA:I is even in the same league as TW3

I'm not sure how one can say that it had a better main story, it was the typical saving the world (just rushed) story with Cory as the lame antagonist who may even be worse than the Wild Hunt (at least they didn't get owned as much)

It had some good moments (Haven, Warden arc) but overall it was just rushed and unsatisfying (how they dealt with Mage-Templar war and the Breach especially), not to mention the sequel baiting

And the main point (like with TW3) is exploration and open world and since the latter and the side quests are so lazily done it makes DA:I even worse

Regarding combat, the consensus seems to be they've made it too easy, but I honestly feel that helped them get better scores this time. Most reviewers hated TW2's starting difficulty. A Dark mode is needed or they should consider balancing the hardest two settings again. I wonder if that's even possible at this point. The twitch aspect they've nailed this time as controls are responsive and your distance from the enemy plays a big role. As with TW2, not using quen makes it much more tactical. It appears we'll get NG+ as one of the DLCs, if it hasn't been mentioned here yet. Ironically, that may be better balanced.

I have a Triss vs. Yenn question. Is there a way that I can keep Triss following her ship quest in Novigrad without declaring Geralt's love for her, so that she features in the story, but have Geralt stay with (in my view his) cannonical love interest Yenn?

... I'm not sure I worded that right.

Yes.

Just don't romance her. She will show up later regardless.
