I wasn't really talking about the plots, it was more about the people, locations and world state. You learn about these things with Geralt throughout the first two games as he regains his memory. By the time the third game rolls around Geralt has fully recovered his memories, so events and characters that weren't in the first two games will be referenced or shown. The books are the only option for players to go into the game knowing as much as Geralt does.
Aha, makes more sense then. I still don't like it though
