Ugh, been in Skellige for a while now and ran into the first day where TW3 felt like a bit of a chore.

The problem is, if there are question marks (or anything really) on the map, I kinda have to do it. Now you could say that this is my problem and I should just get a handle on my completionist OCD but I know that I am not the only one with such a compulsion.

Now, in Velen and around Novigrad, exploring all the question marks was really fun. You ride around on Roach, have a look at the beautiful countryside and every now and then you get to beat the crap out of some bandits or a couple of monsters or whatever. Even when you spent a whole day just doing question marks, it was fun and never got tedious also because the things you discovered were kind of diverse (find the treasure, explode the nest, root out bandits from horseback, etc.). That was great.

On the isles (or rather between the isles) things are different though. Just going by boat from point to point in a straight line, just fighting some sirens when you get there and then get the smuggler cache chest may be ok for the first and maybe the second time but not the 20th. Now, you could say "It's your own fault, just don't do them all at once". Problem there is, the way it's set up kinda encourages you to do just that because you have to get into a boat and go to a fairly remote place. Once you are there, the next one is also remote but at least are you already half way there, so you better keep going. And so it goes on. If you were to go back in between, the whole thing would take even more time. This also results in the fact that I am doing half of my exploration overburdened, which makes it even more tedious and slow.

The kicker is, I am not even getting any useful loot out of it, just heaps of heavy junk armors (which arguably does yield a lot of money but money, I have enough already)

As I said in the beginning, you may counter here that no one forces me to explore all these caches at all but I ask, what point is there in content, the only good part of which is that it's optional.

Now, why do I write this rant here of all places? Because diving for the smuggler caches reminded me of DA:I's infamous shard hunt, because I don't want the upcoming ME:A to make the same mistake yet again and because I think the solution would be super simple: Just don't point out the filler content on the map, let the player wonder the world and stumble on the stuff that is just nice but not really good enough for seeking it out. I once stumbled on one smuggler cache before reading the notice board in the area (just when crossing between isles) and that was cool, I really wished they wouldn't have put in the question marks for these.

Now, I kinda feel bad for making such a long rant post about what most probably would consider a very minor issue and I don't consider this a big problem either. Everything else about the game is still great. I guess I was just a little disappointed because for 65 hours, TW3 managed to stay clear of any and all open world pitfalls (which is a remarkably achievement) and I was kinda hoping they would pull it through all the way. Alas, it seems even CDPR cannot resist the urge to copy/paste some filler content into their world.

Yeah, TW3 was designed to break our gaming OCD. It was rough but in the end I think I'm better for it.

Skellige ignore every single question mark which is in the sea. All of them are smuggler's caches and since how loot works they are absolutely pointless. Random loot is always scaled to be 2 levels below your current.

So just go for the ones on land as they have places of powers, abandoned sites, nests and hidden school gear.

Thanks! I did figure that out by now as well. It still irks me that these question marks are there though, especially because this content is so pointless. Who would ever think of putting something like this into a game that otherwise is so careful to avoid pure fillers?

I heavily advise just turning off question marks entirely in HUD options.

Then, when you explore and you actually find something cool, it's that much more rewarding and pleasing.

And you don't waste your time running pointlessly from question mark to question mark.

Agreed with Jester. Turning off the ? makes it more fun and less of a chore. I am glad they choose to include it in the game.

Ha, yea, should definitely have done that. I didn't even realize it was possible to turn markers on and off so selectively. It's almost too late now but whenever I'll do another playthrough, that's definitely what I'll do.

Finished the game last night and I'm going through some serious withdrawal right now. I haven't been this emotionally attached since my original Mass Effect run.

I like the ending that I got, and I feel like it's the most fitting one in context with the books. I also feel like all of the endings leave the door somewhat open for the possibility of a game with Ciri as the protagonist. I'd buy that.

I felt that way after I finish the game. Immediately try to go back and start a new playthrough which was a huge mistake. Took a break from the game. With the DLCs and new patches. Figure it was time to get back into it and I am having more fun this playthrough then the first one. I am doing more explorations and no fast travel. Finally seeing the world is making this current playthrough very rewarding.

Knew it was a good idea to take a break from the game after the first run, just to let the memory of the different contracts fade.

Looking forward to playing it again in a few months, though, and with that NG+ action. Uhnf.

Yeah, I turned off all the ? for my new playthrough and am having a great time. Well, with the exception of running into a few bugs that I didn't in my first playthrough (ie the quest with the halfling merchant in Novigrad being bugged and incompletable). I have run into a quest moment that has actually annoyed me though and it occurs at the end of The Phantom of Eldberg mission after reporting back to the questgiver in a tavern.

I'm on my second playthrough as well, bumped the difficulty one level higher and am doing an alchemy build. On my first run I was chasing question marks in the area but that meant I was really over-leveled for the main quests in the early part of the game. So for now I'm trying to keep up with the main quest a bit more before exploring as much as I can.

I'm thinking about a second playthrough maybe six months from now with New Game+. May play on a higher difficulty as well and play with a strong attack build.

I didn't chase many of the question marks. If I was close to one, I may have taken a look. But what got me was the crafting and a lot of the side quests. I think I did most of the Witcher contracts.

I was bent on getting mastercraft feline armour and swords. So I spent a lot of time looking for diagrams and ingredients. I probably could have finished the game sooner if I hadn't been so focused on improving my armour. I stayed away from gwent because after playing a few rounds of it I knew I'd get horribly addicted.

I kind of try to avoid larger RPGs because they're simply too big and you need a lot of time for them, but I'm glad that I made time for this. Overall, I think this is my personal GOTY. This is one of the few games that I feel is well worth the full price.

I've avoided every thread, any article out there, anything that has something remotely with spoilers in it. Today completed the Witcher 3. Best game I've played this year and now in my top 5 roleplaying games of all time.

Been exploring Skellige for the first time during the past couple of days. That place is huge and therefore quite intimidating! I don't know where to go.

Then I was walking through some road and bump into a Cyclops. Scared the hell out of me so I ran away. Then I was exploring another area and go behind a building and out pops out a Werewolf. Got scared again and ran away. This is so much fun.

Sounds familiar. When I finally got out of Novigrad and arrived in Skellige I was like "where am I going?', but after a while you figure it out. I remember just minding my own business, zipping down a forest path on horseback and then a cyclops came out of nowhere and I almost jumped off my couch.

I remember shouting "HOLY F**K! What was that!? Let's go back and look. I want to see it. HOLY F**K! It's a cyclops! Run Roach!"

And then Roach's fear level hit maximum and I got bucked off and I had to fight it.

I've been thrown off Roach way too many times already. He's a feisty one.

EDIT: Spoiler Warning!

Wow! Just went through the battle of Kaer Morhen yesterday night. What a spectacle!
Sorry BW but the battle of Haven can suck it when compared to this one. It may technically not be as grand in scale but the build-up, the choreography and (probably most importantly) the fact that you know every participant personally are just brilliant. At times I almost got a Helm's Deep vibe. My favorite scene was Geralt, Lambert and Letho fighting in the forest, when Triss' gets delayed with her fireballs. Talk about three witchers kicking a$$. Zoltan's backstabbing action was a close second though. :)

But seriously, as far as mid-game climaxes go, this is probably the best one I have seen yet. Unfortunately, I was very much over-leveld for the fights, since I pretty much completed all the open world stuff before, so I was level 30 with superior ursine witcher gear and just before sailing to the isle of mist I had killed a level 48 Archgriffin, so there wasn't much of a challenge in terms of gameplay. But the presentation of the battle made up for it and it was super cool that I got to travel the world before, gathering all my allies and friends.

Loosing Vesemir  - although I saw that one coming - also had much more of an impact than losing all these faceless NPCs in DA:I's Haven battle. I think it's fair to compare the two because they serve almost the exact same function in the narrative of the story. The funeral pyre was a nice callback to the beginning of the Witcher 1 when Leo died.

Although it was already the middle of the night, I did go right on to kill Imrelith. It was also good to get another encounter with the crones, felt that was left hanging there a bit before but I wonder if we'll see the one that escaped again.

All in all, now I am really excited to finish the main story. I guess it shouldn't take too long now since I don't have anything else left to do.

Yeah there was a big thread on CDP that had everything confirmed to be cut (dev notes, from the devs themselves, datamined ect). From that to a completely different climax

Spoiler

Also stuff was datamined for future contenjt, along with the new Triss content we are getting, there will be more stuff for Ciri and Yens relationship.

Should've stayed and fought like a man ;)

Proudest moment in the game when I killed a level 31 or 32 basiliisk as level 21. On hard mode. And the level 32 venomous Arachnea (or however you spell it) with the four drones as level 24. Died a few times, but didn't quit. It's awesome when you kill monsters that are so much higher than you. Except for Wraiths, **** those things.
