You will need to purchase the Expansion pass ($25 US but people in different regions are reporting higher prices)

A lot of people on the GOG forums are actually cancelling there Pre-Orders because of this.

People are threatening to cancel preorders because of paid DLC? Alrighty then. That's pretty much the textbook definition of 'whiny entitled gamer.'

In truth though I think they are being attention whores. I can't imagine anyone cancelling a preorder over anything that had to do with DLC, so long as the base game looks both complete and good. And so far at least TW3 looks like it checks both of those boxes. I can understand not buying the DLC, but cancelling a preorder?

5 Orens says most of those people are making empty threats and will still preorder.

I'm really glad we will receive expansions i can't even remember when was the last time i've played the game which had one that wasn't considered a DLC.

DA: Awakening and Heart of Swarm i think...

The only bad thing i see from this is that CDPR should have announced this after TW3, a lot of people who are too lazy to read or understand will consider that Reds went back on their words since they said DLCs will be free and nowadays a lot of ppl don't see difference between DLC and Expansion, even though it's a pretty huge one.

My only question is how will the plot get handled in terms of timeline. Will it be set during the main campaign or after or is it going to be like Fallout NV where you can acess extra content when you've reached the specific level. Either way looking forward to it.

I thought CDProjekt said no paid DLC? Will the expansion be free?

"We could sell extra content to gamers 'down the road,' but we don’t believe in that," he said, "we believe patches, fixes and additional content should be provided to gamers free of charge. Only something REALLY big, and something that will not make you feel ripped off, justifies a price tag."

Those expansion packs will likely have far more content than the vast majority of full games released these days, so I don't really see any fault in CDPR charging for it. Much less than those aforementioned games, to boot...

So basically like I said: they'll pitch that this has got so much content it's totally worth it.

Some threads are even having the classic debate on what is considered DLC and what is considered an expansion.

Personally for it comes down to whether or not you feel you are getting the value of the money you used to purchase the item and if you feel that you won't get the value of your money than you can just not buy it. As long as you enjoyed and had fun with it is really what is important..........right?

And, if, in your opinion it is not worth it, don't buy. Simple really.

They owe no one anything. And they never said expansions would be free, they promised nothing of the sort. Anger over this is reaching for something to complain about.

People having a self-righteous bitchfest over not getting 30 hours worth of new content for free a year after the game itself releases? I... I don't even...

I hope these people never breed.

God forbid CD Projekt actually making some money though DLC.

They probably forgot that they are still a business.

Why do you keep thinking I have anything against CDPR or what they're doing? Where have I said I think they're in the wrong?

I just find it amusing when the company so many felate so furiously as being different is not so different after all.

I am not really bothered, but I can see why people aren't happy with it. It goes against the strong rhetoric that has helped to build CDPR's reputation as a pro-consumer company. Of course, the rhetoric was mostly PR-driven but it's whipped their fans into a frenzy in the past. I appreciated those policies of course and probably went overboard with praise a number of years ago, but other people took it to another level and still do.

Now that CDPR is undertaking in practices that are not so high and mighty (rumours of the graphics downgrade and after Watch Dogs the mere notion of a graphics downgrade implies so much more than just lower res textures, expansion passes for pre-order, etc), those people are taking it harder than they ought to.

As for me, I'll buy Witcher 3 around release if initial impressions and youtube gameplay videos indicate it's not a disaster.

Honestly, they were bound to do it eventually.  To give them this "holier than thou" persona, didn't help either.  The game itself looks magnificent and I'm excited for it, regardless of this what's going on.  I'm hoping for the best, but I'm not over hyping myself just because it's CDPR, I did that with Bioware and **** went sour real quick.  The game should be based off the game they release itself, not on what they're doing outside of it, plus - look at how they've handled their fans and games in the past in general and people are really this quick to diminish them right away?  You don't have to be a fanboy, nor oblivious to certain things, but wait till the game comes out and speak with your wallet.  Either buy it, wait till it goes on sale or don't.

I know that the game has been in content lock since late 2014, since then it's mostly been QA bug hunting and polishing. That does leave with a score of writers and designers free to move on to other things, which is planning these expansions.

I honestly can't fault them, they didn't do some 180 or contradict themselves on their policies.

Don't know about that. I can still see a lot of differences to let's say Bioware

No DRM if you buy it retail or on gog.com (Dragon Age forces me to use Origins and it has Denuvio)

No exclusive ingame content (time-exclusive xbox/pc dlc)

No additional ingame content if you pay more for your game (Inquisition's Deluxe Edition)

Mod support by releasing RedKit after release (Bioware uses a difficult to mod engine and doesn't plan to release a mod-kit. Quite the opposite, they break the mods with every patch)

Cheaper game (I paid 59 Euro for Inqusition on Origins, while I paid 43 Euro for Witcher 3 in gog.com, thanks to a price discount for owning Witcher 1/2)

No microtransactions (though to be fair Witcher 3 has no multiplayer)

Maybe CD Project Red isn't the holy grail of consumer friendly release politics, but they are still better than almost all other developers/publishers and definitely much better than EA/Bioware.

I think the main reason people are so against this pass is that they see it as CDProject/GOG falling down a slippery slope.

- In the past they said there would be no regional pricing on GOG but they now have regional pricing.

- In the past they said they would have games available in all areas but they now have games that are locked out of certain areas.

- Many see GOG Galaxy as the slow introduction of DRM to the site which goes against there original policies (Right now it is purely optional but something like it is necessary for multi player games).

So many feel the introduction of the pass to a CDProject game will lead them to doing other practices that are seen as shady in the Triple AAA publishing area.

So I think people are just concerned they are abandoning a lot of things the platform was originally built on (If you look at past interviews some of the team have taken shots at other developers for doing the above so people also see it as hypocritical to be adopting these.)

But again I am just speculating based on what has happened in the last little while.

I just find it odd how their being up front and announcing this before hand turns them into the devil. Given how paranoid some gamers are, why don't they secretly think that every company is purposely cutting back on their features to give themselves better ROI?

Even take CDPR's promise of 16 free pieces of dlc which people cheer for. Is that really free content or is that CDPR lying to its fan base just to get their good will?

CDP isn't below or above any other publisher -- They aren't your friends here to look out for you, they want to make money just like any other publisher, which incidentally means they'll also adhere to the modern money grubbing practices when it's convenient for them.
This is the publisher who released both their Witcher games twice, vaguely disguised as an "Enhanced Edition" even though said enhancements are more or less patch notes that could and should be added to the original.

Now the naive people will call for their heads as they can't possibly comprehend how CDP is potentially going the same route as BioWare even though common sense usually says otherwise.

Still, Witcher 3 is looking good and in the end that's what matters. If it's a good game, then all is well.

Isn't that exactly what they did as well??? As far as I'm aware, TW2's Enhanced Edition was a free upgrade for everyone who had purchased the regular game.
