It will definitely have fetch quests. Every RPG does. The real question is whether they're well disguised and have some clever design to them.

I saw somewhere, I think it was at IGN, they played and said the sidequest were very well designed to not be equal and linear.

All Witcher games had fetch quests, or kill X quests. I don't see why this one will be any different, especially if they're aiming for 200 hours of gameplay. And yes, I know the Kill X quests are justified by Geralt being a monster slayer by trade and yadda yadda, but they're still Kill X quests. You will find those in ever single RPG in existence, really.

It goes back to putting CD Projeckt and their games on a pedestal that they cannot possibly live up to in reality. I like this company for the good things it actually does, not those it does in my imagination.

Even though they are, in the end?

It's a cheat, really. We all know it. We should just accept it.

Pffft. What are you on about? I expect some sort of repetition, but the preview people aren't lying - they haven't seen any yet.

If it is not in the main story, I do not care.

Even DA:I avoided that part. I think we need to set the bar higher.

Mhm.

Perhaps these quests change as history walk, what is already quite something.

They also haven't seen the full game yet. I'm less inclined to believe that there are MMO style fetch quests though. I didn't follow DAI super closely, but it seems like when people got proper previews of it (like a week before launch) they brought up the MMO questing. So I assume since a few sites have gotten a decent chunk of time with TW3 we would've heard reports of MMO questing. If there's fetch quests I'm guessing they'll be the hidden type, or at least spaced out a bit.

In terms of open world pacing vs story. I think a decent way to offset the disconnect would be to have some more "important" missions have a timer and if you don't hit that timer, you get a bad end to the mission, and enough of those will leave you with a bad end to the story. Similar to how if for some reason you decided to dick around after the crew was abducted in ME2, you would have crew members die.

Certainly balancing a meaningful story with an engaging open world environment will be a difficult task mainly because you have that third party variable. Being player agency. The player will set the pace of the story, so having subtle guide rails, or at least consequences to not taking it seriously will be helpful. Having these guide rails only effect "important" missions would allow for freedom in the more slow paced parts of the game to screw around and do sidequests.

At the very least the open world seems to be interesting and have a more natural flow to it in TW3, it feels real. In some open world games, for example two worlds two. The world doesn't feel natural, it doesn't seem to work nor does it make sense. It seems to flow somewhat realistically, similarly to what Bethesda does. CDPR seems to have put thought into how the world would function were it a real place, instead of just placing things around randomly because it looked neat.

Also in reference to the open world, I like what they've done with the three cities we have. Novigard, Oxenfurt, and Vizima will give us a look at a city controlled by the Northern Kingdoms, a city caught in the middle of the conflict, and a city controlled by the Nilfgaards.

That post sort of rambled a bit, but I'm slightly drunk so whatever.

To be honest, id rather see his dick over Triss extremely fake breasts again.

And by fake, I sometimes wonder if the fantasy world they inhabit does plastic surgery, it seems like they get bigger as time goes on...

You're not that far off mark actually, a lot of female magic users like to cosmetically alter themselves through the use of magic simply for the cold reality that sex appeal gives them more means to acquire influence.

"Unlike priestesses and druidesses, who only unwillingly took ugly or crippled girls, sorcerers took anyone who showed evidence of a predisposition. If the child passed the first years of training, magic entered into the equation - straightening and evening out legs, repairing bones which had badly knitted, patching harelips, removing scars, birthmarks and pox scars. The young sorceress would become attractive because the prestige of her profession demanded it. The result was pseudo-pretty women with the angry and cold eyes of ugly girls. Girls who couldn't forget their ugliness had been covered by the mask of magic only for the prestige of their profession."

Triss, however, I believe has always been a good looking woman. CDPR might have taken some liberties, since she's described as having auburn hair in the books rather than the 'carrot' red.

The Witcher 3 will have fetch quests no doubt but I imagine they'll be more entertaining than what Inquisition gave. There's simple fetch quests such as "go collect 200 bear foreskins for us Inquisitor for no reason" and others with story "go collect these special materials so I can summon a demon that you'll have to kill, this demon killed my family and I shall tell you the sad story afterwards which might even lead to a non-fetch side quest afterwards."

Inquisition's fetch quests made no sense but I'm sure The Witcher 3's will be incorporated into the theme of the world just as they were in the past two games. Also CD Projekt normally honour their promises, I imagine the game will also be filled with tons of interesting side quests just as the first two games were so I don't think there's any need to worry on the optional content.

What I like is areas that feel big without actually being big -- The comparison to Wind Waker earlier was sound enough with the whole aspect of sailing, which made the world in that game feel big without necessarily being big. I don't see much point in the whole underwater swimming, aside from "Look we have underwater swimming" unless there's some sort of underwater dungeon you can explore that carries a significant importance to a subplot in which case it could be interesting. I like areas like Silent Hill in the Silent Hill games, Shadow Moses in MGS or the Asylum in Arkham Asylum, the Metroidvania-esque exploration. Where you familiarize yourself with the environment and as you progress you'll open up new secrets there weren't there before, new areas, which is neat. It makes it all memorable. What i don't like are open worlds like in any Ubisoft game as of late, where at best every significant structure in the world is more or less filler and unforgettable, entirely build up on busy work.

Hopefully Witcher 3 won't feel like busywork otherwise it's just gonna end up as a game I'll abandon half-way through to play something else, and probably never gonna get back to it again, as it always does with those kinds of games for me.

I can't say I'm overly happy about this tendency to make everything open world these days, as it usually always results in rather un-interesting open space as opposed to something neat and tightly structured sprawly fun.

Yeah, Triss doesn't use magic to change her looks. I think she has some sort of negative reaction to casting magic on herself, if I remember correctly. Yen on the other hand is a hunchback, but uses magic to hide it. A lot of sorceresses are cast offs from noble families, who were either too ugly to marry off, or deformed/disfigured in one way or the other. I think that adds an interesting level of depth to them. Unlike in DA where mages are feared, in TW mages aren't very feared, but they're seen as away to shove away something that could potentially bring shame to your family. Not unlike how Alistair was shoved off to the chantry at a young age. I imagine many a bastard were shoved away to become wizards/sorceresses in TW.

Let's see if we can get a good story with a huge map like this.
I thought we'd see Nilfgaard advance and we will decide and etc, then depending on our choices, some cities would change, but it seems that the game start the war took a break, so I'm curious to know what kind of changes will be. One they said, villages attacked by Wild Hunt are frozen, but they are already pre-defined or up to us ? I do not know.

Well, every game with missions or quests have sequences that involve traveling from point A to point B, maybe stopping at points C, D or E along the way, and then possibly returning back to point A. I honestly don't know many interesting quests that involve standing still and not doing anything. So in that regard, yes... every RPG has fetch quests.

The difference, to me at least, is the feeling of a To Do list. Am I moving from quest marker to quest marker, neither paying attention or caring about the details and events along the way? Or am I engaged and interested about the events going on, the characyers invovled and even the possible choices along the way?

The term "fetch quest," especially in a duragatory tone, is much more about quality than structure.

What are you guys running for the witcher 3? I'm debating between upgrading to a 970 or a Sapphire OC 290x. The Sapphire does have the full 4 gigs, but it also has a massive power draw, and it's not quite as powerful. Also TW3 is optimized for Nvidia. While the 970 is a great card, and out preforms most other cards, the 3.5 leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not because games will necessarily require 3.5 gigs (aside from poorly optimized ones) but just because of the false advertising.

Also the 970 is slightly cheaper and comes with a free copy of TW3, so I'd be saving about $80/90 by going with it. I'm upgrading from a 7870.

This is easily my most hype game for the past several months. Can not care about fetch quests what so ever, I just want to be Geralt again. Not sure if my first playthrough will be me trying to stay faithful to Triss. I might just play the kill everything, bed everything Witcher for the first time round.

I'm not one for the more advanced graphic settings, but I hope I'll be able to play this alright.

i7-4770k oc'd to 4.2

780 ti Superclocked

8 - 16gb of ram (Depends if I upgrade from 8gb to 16gb before this comes out.)

And I can't wait to see how my 144hz monitor helps as well. It's helped me with Inquisition, to the point where I don't need the 60fps console command anymore.

I'm still on a HD 7870, hoping that the announced minimum requirements don't mean "the game WILL launch, but there is literally no way for you to play the game as anything other than a slideshow".

It's cool seeing the old faces from the old BSN. I used to post a lot, but stopped in like 2012, only came back because of DAI, and am mainly only sticking around because it's one of the places I talk about TW3.
