Are they going to be in DAI? What will they look like this time? Did someone ask this question already?

That wasn't a darkspawn, that was a ghoul.

I asked in the Raptr Q&A they did and was told that they WILL be making an appearance.  I then had to go to work so I couldn't ask if they looked more like Origins or DA2.

I'd bet DA2, but upgraded for Frostbite 3. The concept art is disturbing, so they'll look less like chalkspawn.

But will they still move like the puddy patrol?

It wasn't that one, I don't remember where I saw it but it was 3, hurlock, gemlock and a ghoul.

Maybe? But DA:O darkspawn weren't any different in cutscenes. DA2 recycled their animations.

My guess is that we'll enter the Deep Roads at some point. And the Deep Roads without darkspawn is like a cheeseburger without the cheese.

It's starting to feel formulaic. Is it obligatory in every Dragon age game now that we have to visit the deep roads and the fade?

Is that true? That doesn't seem possible.

Just like a lot of DA fans, I'm very much invested in the Darkspawn/Grey Warden thread of the overriding narrative and tend to associate that particular subject foremost with the franchise. I know that there is plenty of room in Thedas for other subject matter, as clearly evidenced by DA2, much of the adjacent reading material, and of course the pending release of DA:I, but the Darkspawn/Grey Warden plotline is seldom far from my thoughts regarding the series. Of course the devs are right and responsible to expand the breadth of the setting as far and wide as possible, but for good or ill, the Darkspawn threat was the hook that set in the minds of all of us that played the original game. Anything outside of that plot line is welcome, as long as it's worthy, but until that threat is removed, it will always seem the elephant in the room to anyone that has been involved in the series from its origin. Satisfied as I may be by the outcome of the original, the lore makes it very clear that the last Blight was relatively quickly quelled. There is the lingering doubt, even after the events in Awakening, and especially after the events of the Deep Roads expedition in DA2, that the last Blight was ended maybe too easily.

I wonder if a spin off would provide a solution? Maybe a story more focused and intimate like Hawke's, but in the context of the Darkspawn conflict? Say a story originating in the Deep Roads within the ranks of the Legion of the Dead, be it as a dwarf or some other sort cast off? This way the Darkspawn are not marginalized by the other conflicts raging in Thedas, but that that particular narrative is no longer burdened by the weight of carrying the franchise (or maybe the vice versa is more accurate).

Just a thought. Anyways, I'd be more inclined to see monstrous, scary, intimidating Darkspawn. DA:O was a more suitable concept, and it had to evolve from there, but the look in DA2, while not as bad as many might say, especially including the Darkspawn from the Legacy DLC, was a step back in regards to how profoundly frightening the creatures should in my mind (and, I imagine, the minds of many others) appear.

What do you mean? Bioware recycles their animations like crazy. DA2 has a bunch from ME2, etc.

This. The Darkspawn and the threat they represent is what drew me into the series: the Grey Wardens are the big damn heroes that Thedas needs, but not the ones it deserves. I was sorely disappointed by DAII's "personal" story, and while I'm happy that Inquisition is heading back in the "save the world" direction, the Darkspawn will always be very close to my heart.

Also, The Messenger as a party member when?

Darkspawn are the best thing to happen to dragon age... I am not joking.

They started the series.

They weakened the Tervinter Imperium.

They make people unite.

And they are what  makes dragon age special.
