For some reason I can't get proper responses from NPCs. Voldrik wont talk to me even tho' he has the plot thing over his head and I need to tell him about the granite deposits. Same with Wade and the heartwood/iron ore. Also Sgt Maverlies is still waiting for the rubble to be cleared. Any help?

I've had the same issue with Voldrik and Wade, and the solution on the wiki worked for me:

Sometimes the player is unable to start the proper conversation with the Vigil Keep dwarves Dworkin and Voldrik to get their sidequests (What is Built Endures, Memories of the Stone, Bombs Away!) even if you are carrying the required items and the plot helper icon is shining above them. Similar problem with the Heartwood (exotic materials) quest for Master Wade. Walking away then coming back and speaking to them does not solve the glitch, nor does going to a different location/zone. However, if you complete the entire Wending Woods quest arc through the end of the Silverite Mines then all three of these quests should be able to progress.

The Maverilies bug is one I'm not familiar with, though.

Awakening is just fraught with annoying bugs and glitches.

It's really amazing just how bad the bugs are after all this time. I'll always treasure my perfect playthrough save, and hope that I never have to recreate it ever again.

My last run through DAA I used 13 mods specific to the expansion.

10 of them were bug fixes. (11 if you count the one that makes the random encounters actually trigger.)

Try completing one of the three main questlines and then coming back to it, if you haven't already done so.

He is "elsewhere" - it is revealed doing what in Witch Hunt.

You don't really need the mods to get all the quests to trigger, but you need to metagame the hell out of quests in order to get them. Like Valenna's quest, the best way to make her personal quest trigger is to leave straight from the silverite mine to the city of Amaranthine and then on to Vigil's Keep, and Sigrun just requires going in the right direction and not doing the law and order quest beforehand. But yeah, it's annoying that you have to do those things at all.

Not quests. Random encounters. There are a bunch that have such a low vanilla probability of triggering that in an unmodded game they'll never happen.

If Barkspawn isn't tracking the witch, what's he doing then? Resting and preparing for the difficult job of lecturing Ariane? :D

Preparing maybe, resting likely not.

more hassles - now I can't get through the Vigils Keep siege. Once I have beaten off the children by the east wall and that little alley bit, I go back to the gates where
Varel is battling darkspawn. I cannot engage the enemy and all Garavel says is we will be victorious. I checked on wiki and there is supposed to be a cutscene where Varel is killed by an ogre (?). The map shows only the herald outside the gates (little red dot) and the plot marker is still indicating the east wall. After this I'll need a cup of tea and a lie down. :P

The biggest threat to Amaranthine is not the darkspawn invasion, it is the bugs.

I know I am a git, but just anyway:

Varel: "Messere, there is a new bug"
Warden: "What! Another Ogre?"
Varel: "No... java.class.NoDefFoundError"
Warden:"Andraste's Flames! Get me a Debugger, and the QA Team!"

@Caradoc

What was the dog doing? I finished Awakening and Witch Hunt and nothing was revealed. Sitting in the castle larder I suppose being fed by kitchen staff? Making little mabari puppies?

(the game allowed me to save Amaranthine but not the keep - maybe one day)
