Dear Bioware,

Can we have better dungeons for DA:I ? For clarification purposes, when I say dungeons, I mean it as a general term for caves, ruins, mines and other underground sections.

It would be nice to have dungeons that actually feel like dungeons. Dungeon sections in an RPG game is supposed to be scary, creepy and not for the faint-hearted.

In order to make dungeons scary and creepy, IMO, the focus should be on lighting, sound effects and enemy placement.

I don't know about other people here but I was replaying DA:O, DA:A and DA2 and the dungeons were not exactly interesting. For one thing they were bright which was totally weird. I mean here we are in a ruin with little to no proper light sources and it is bright. Secondly, the enemies were not behaving the way you would expect enemies in a dark and scary place would.

So here are my suggestions to make dungeons as awesome as possible in DA:I

  1. Reduce the lighting. Make it so that we have to use some potion or a torch or some magical lighting spell to enable easier exploration. Any native light sources in the dungeon like lyrium vein should provide very limited lighting.
  2. Traps. Have deadly traps all across the dungeon level range. In many other games traps in dungeons become useless when you are higher levels which takes the fun and danger away.
  3. Creepy enemies. Creepy as in they have some scare factor. They surprise you out of nowhere in the darkness. That type of thing.
  4. Puzzles. We haven't had many puzzles in DA dungeons so far even though the ones we had tended to be decent. Dragon Age is an RPG game and we should have interesting puzzles and riddles.

Thoughts and comments ?

They said they are redoing it I'm pretty sure, to make it feel more like its an actual cave, or hideout or whatever the location is.  One thing from the demo that is really nice, is at one part when it was kinda closed in the footsteps echoed nicely.

1. That sounds pretty interesting. Maybe you can use the fade-thing in your hand as a source of light?

2. As long as it's actually visible in the game world (rather than some strange red flashing light, like DA2), and more interesting looking (mammoth skull on a chain, spike pit, dart launchers in the walls, giant rolling ball of doom, etc.)

3. That sounds good.

4. Tower of Hanoi FTW.

I would be happy with darkness being, you know, DARK. I hate the trend where places without any visible light source are just covered with bluish tint and are otherwise as clear as daylight >.<. Last time i saw a dark dungeon was in Dark Waters 2 (and damn if that game didnt like to play with light O_O).

Precisely. The caves, ruins, Deep Roads, abandoned mines, etc...They are those things because they are not for the faint-hearted.

I been in one or two cave exploration as part of archeological projects and let me tell you that caves are dark, damp, filled with bats, insects, guano...It is very filthy and you need to have your own light source, not just for visibility but to drive animals like bats and insects away...

Additionally, my professor, who have been in few tombs and even entered the Pyramids once told me that the places are properly dark, dusty, have traps (but they have been disabled by other people obviously), etc.

All in all, places like these are places people just will not just stroll into just looking for treasure or something. It is a team work, it requires prep and it is dangerous. I would like to see that replicated somewhat in RPG games. Replicated and enhanced with creepy monsters that lay in the dark shadows and just jump at you.

So basically you want dungeons like you find in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Which was like...?

As long as all the caves, ruins, dungeons are varied and not reused that would be good. I agree caves especially should be dark but not too dark, creepy yes.

No pitch black dungeons,  TYVM. They were annoying enough in Skyrim and Dragons Dogma.

I've played Skyrim a lot. I don't recall ever needing a light.

I am sorry, but Skyrim? The Dungeons in Skyrim were indeed very good, but they were rarely pitch black. You could get by with not much light. Dragon's Dogma they were pitch black, and I LOVED it. You really had to choose what you wanted to accomplish. My only regret about Dragons Dogma is that I sold my PS3 when I upgraded to a PS4. All in preparation for the blasted ESO. Dang it!

Trying to find ore veins/skill books in caves or at night was hopeless without a torch.

They're dark enough to need a torch mechanic put in atleast.

Caves, ruins and underground areas are not known for having good light sources.

Did you see the Digiexpo demo?

No! I'd never realized that. Thanks really. /s

I do not have any desire to fumble around in the dark. Unless a mage PC can cast a little light over his/her head and be done with it then fine cause I mostly play mages anyway.
