I really like them. Stylish and much better than a shot of the 3d model pulling a stupid face.

They sort of remind me of what Creative Assembly did in Rome 2: Total War. They also went away from actual pictures to in their case a more hyroglypic based art style. Some people liked it, others modded it away immediately. I think recognition of who is who will come quickly - I do wonder if placement of the characters matter at all like it did in e.g. Baldurs Gate, where you had actual different formations, so you would place squishies in the back row etc.

I completely agree. They are insufficiently visually distinct.

Now, if we're allowed to sort the icons manually (ideally all four), then the distinctiveness is less important, but if it's like DAO and DA2 where we have little control over the party order, then I'd like to be able to distinguish among the portraits at a glance.

I'm also hoping the return to 2D portraits means we'll get to import our own again, like in BG and NWN.

They are very similar to R2TW. Both games' icons horrified me when I originally saw them but they're all growing on me now.

I don't find them that difficult to figure out at all once you have seen the character at least once...and not everything in every single RPG has to be like freaking BG or NVN.

It took me longer to choose font colours than know which portrait was for who.  And in previous DA games, the portraits were in the order you put the people in the party.

You didn't always get control of the party order in the first two games, and I'd also really like to be able to sort the Inquisitor to somewhere other than first all the time, depending on her combat role.

That's especially handy when jumping back and forth between playthroughs.

Ideally, I shouldn't even have to look at the portraits to know which is which - the location on the screen should be enough.

And if I do have to look at them (because I'm not abke to sort them), then the briefest glance should be sufficient. I actually modded Leliana's appearance in DAO just because the colours in her portrait too closely resemebled the colours in my second Warden's portrait.

And these portraits are all basically the same colour. If I have to take the time to discern shapes, the portraits aren't doing their job.

Wow. Agreed, 100%.

Who can look at that portrait provided and have any idea who is what and where at a glance?

What is weird is that Vivienne Dorian and the Inquisitors who are all mages have turquoise colored borders while Sera and Iron Bull are yellow bordered.

Those are for stamina and mana. Yellow is stamina; blue is mana.

Mana and Stamina
I think a mana/stamina bar would be better.

Makes sense but kinda hard to gauge just how much is left.

Ummm...me...but maybe I've just been following this game too closely, because I am a crazy person.

If you cant, I'm sure you'll get used to it after a few minutes of actually switching between party members. I think the pictures are different enough that your brain should create a mental shortcut.

Not to say that this is a valid reason for players not being able to tell who is who at first glance. If you really don't see it, I'll believe you, and that is a flaw.

The rings worked in DAO. Unless these are different somehow, I don't foresee a problem.

They look awful to me, far too stylished (I also didn't like the DA2 cutscenes / time jump movies that used it), but I'm sure I'll quickly get used to them, and I only need them to be functional for telling the status of a character at a quick glance. Like I posted in the E3 demo thread, if this ends up my biggest problem with the game, I'm in a pretty damned good place.

Maybe, but the icons are supposed to be easily recognizable, not pictionary puzzles.

I'm sure they did enough plautesting to ensure the majority.will be able to distinguish them.

There are only four of them at the same time so recognition won't be a problem. My issue with the icons is why wouldn't they put there something that is immediately obvious like a portrait.

They shouldn't be trying to give us a single solution that works for the majority.  They should be trying to give us a customizable solution that works for the maximum possible.

I may be blind but is it just me or are Dorian's and Sera's icons.. Cut?

Also I can't see anything in Vivienne's portrait, just some weird black shape with a shark's dorsal fin in the bottom.

What disturbs me with the icon is the fact that they are stylized. They are nice, but will we be able to customize the Inquisitor icon with a pic of our character? And how will this pic fit the sale style art than the one of the companions while still looking like our character? Been wondering about this. I hope we sure CAN change the inquisitor icon

Dorian has what looks to be the collar of his shirt/cloak covering part of his face.  Sera is maybe holding her bow in front of her eye.  The black shape IS Vivienne.  It's a profile view of her head.

I'm pretty sure it's just going to be the Inquisitor symbol instead of our faces.  I don't mind that, because I found the old ones ugly and boring.
