So I was just thinking about how we will be able to change all the companions' (maybe not Varric?) weapon styles. However, it also got me thinking about the default styles they will be using, i.e. the styles they will have or the weapons they will be using when we recruit them. Some characters are more or less a given, but just like with specialization for the companions it could be fun to speculate what their default weapon style will be. I will also include advisors since we have seen at least two of them with weapons.

My predictions:

Blackwall: Two handed

Cassandra: Sword and shield

Cole: Dual wield

Dorian: Staff, Necromancy / Summoning, Lightning

Iron Bull: Two handed

Sera: Bow

Solas: Staff, Rift-based / Arcane

Varric: Bow (Bianca)

Vivienne: Staff, Elemental / Ice & Fire

Cullen: Sword and shield

Josephine: Quill (MAYBE dual wield)

Leliana: Bow

I could see Cassandra and Blackwall switching places though, seeing as our first look at Cassandra was with a two hander and Blackwall's first art showed him with a sword and shield.

What do you guys think?

Cassandra is the first warrior we get, it's always a "tank" for gameplay reasons, but going by how soon she join, it's probably easy to move her into two-handed if you are playing the "tank".

I wonder if one-handed sword without shield is also an option.

I know you could do it in DAO, but it was still the same gameplay style like sword & shield except without the shield. It sadly wasn't an option in DA 2 :(

So Cassandra is the only tank among the companions?

If by that you mean she's the only one using a sword and shield, then yes. But a tank can be any class of warrior who can use the taunt ability, I think.

My guesses:

Blackwall: Two handed, Champion

Cassandra: Sword and shield, Templar

Cole: Dual wield, Assassin

Dorian: Staff, Rift Mage

Iron Bull: Two handed, Reaver

Sera: Bow, Tempest

Solas: Staff, Necromancer

Varric: Bow (Bianca), Artificer

Vivienne: Staff, Knight Enchanter

Cullen: Sword and shield, Templar

Josephine: Staff, Rift Mage

Leliana: Bow, Tempest

True, but if my memory serves me correctly every tank companion in DA games used Sword and Shield.

I wouldn't say that. She is the starting tank by default of being the first warrior that join and her starting weapons seems to be a sword&shield (which is better than two-handed to tank).

Josephine: Staff, Rift Mage

I think it was already confirmed that Josephine has no combat experience or whatsoever. She is just a civilian.

Yeah, it'd be cool if the Duelist specialization was centered on sword and no shield combat instead of dual wielding.

Probably, though I used Fenris as a tank in DA2 and it was alot easier to play than with Aveline- just my opinion :)

Ah my bad. I think she would've been a cool mage or rogue nontheless.

lol. Josephine's weapon. The writer said she is intended never to be a warrior. She's quite brainy type. She fights with her interllect and wit. :D

I think it's been said that companions have specializations similar to DA2

This is what was said:

Q: Will companions have their own unique specs like in DAII or can you assign them the same specs that players could chose from a la Origins?
A: They have a Spec based upon their unique story.
Consider Cole... (MD)
