Game is looking real good, but they need to start showing some serious combat demos because what we've seen so far in these E3 vids generally devolves into a mess of a fight with no real direction or semblance of control on the part of the player. I don't think this is a problem with the actual gameplay itself, but simply that putting the game on easy and making the player characters invulnerable and just attacking things doesn't really work out well for conveying what combat is like. It just feels like a spam fest of abilities and running around hitting things.
Exactly this.
I can't even understand why they don't make the unique combat mechanics of DA a selling point and instead play on low difficulty and do random swaps confusing anyone that watches it.
There isn't any other game out there with so much customization in party member behavior and we haven't heard about it once till now. Only some random uses of the word "teamwork".
The way the Inquisitor closes the Fade rips looks really cool. She's like "You got the touch! You got the powahh!"
A Transformers : The Movie reference. Awesome.
Unless you don't know what I'm talking about, then forget I said anything. ![]()
I'm still catching up - have they said why the PC can close rifts, or is that a mystery I should wait for the game to reveal?

they haven't said yet. Apparently its one of the games big mysteries
I really can't wait to see what the Knight Enchanter's summoned weapons look like.

I'll stop looking, then. Thanks muchly.

They have made a point of emphasizing the tactical view and whatnot.
I imagine the worry is that, should they show off the game at high difficulties, they might drive away the more (numerous) casual RPG fans.

Showing easy, button mashy combat is much more likely to drive off "hardcore" RPG fans. Showing challenging tactical combat won't push away many "casuals".

So you want them to just reveal the story before the game is released?
Showing more combat like you guys / gals want would ruin the story imho, nothing too wrong with the odd combat here and there, it's a great balance imho.
Maybe a video on crafting, now that would be nice
I really like the improved animations in cutscenes and the tactical combat looks very nice. And Leliana is BADASS!! ![]()
They've said that there will be more in detail videos to come, this was just the E3 demo to wet the appetite, one which I don't even know if they were for sure going to show until everyone asked for it. So we will probably get detailed videos about the crafting, combat, party mechanics, keep, and all that good stuff

The don't really have to show the higher difficulties. They can still show the synergy and tactics at work in lower difficulties without doing random stuff as they show the tactical view. Show how a companion responds to something the main player did. I don't think it's too difficult for the team that developed the combat to make a small montage of how effective and flashy good tactics are, even if the scenario isn't very doable in the real game.
If that's their reason I'd be really disappointed. But I don't think that's the case cause most DAO trailers etc made a point to show how many enemies you are going to kill.
I still think it's an attempt to pass it off as a thinking man's action game which really gets on my nerves.

That's not how I would describe what they've shown. Like I said, they've made a point to emphasize the tactical controls and the ways you can use your abilities to shape the battlefield in your favor.
The "hardcore" (
) RPG fans are far fewer in number and they're the ones most likely to be paying attention to all the talk of tactical options and hear the devs when they note that the combat on display is on a lower difficulty setting. The more casual crowd composes the bulk of the audience.
It was great to get a closer look at the game from seeing the E3 demo.
The game is shaping up very nicely and the wait until October 7th seems ever longer.
I noticed one thing that bothered me a little...during the battle where they show cased utilizing the environment and taking advantage of the stairs and bottleneck at the bottom, we see the Venatori Spellbinder and his apparent elemental weakness and immunity. Playing DA2 on nightmare introduced what seemingly felt like random immunities to enemies - Mabari immune to fire, Coterie immune to spirit, etc. In some cases, certain elemental immunities made sense like a Rage demon immune to fire. But dogs?
So when I saw this mage type enemy who appears human having an immunity to fire, I had a bit of a concern that nonsensical elemental immunities were returning. I do not mind high resistance to a particular element to balance out a weakness for another. Now of course, if there is actually a reason to explain the immunities that make sense, it would not bother me. Perhaps there is context behind the Venatori Spellbinder being immune to fire. Or perhaps immunity to fire is actually a resistance percentage that will never reach 100. But if turns out to be randomly assigning a full elemental immunity to an enemy just for the sake of increasing the difficulty, I would be somewhat disappointed.
A minor nitpick admittedly but there it is.

What are you even talking about. I don't want to see boss fight mechanics. They can just put some random enemies and kill them with 3 different ways. One as playing only the main character. One as adding tactical view etc and one as using good tactics so the player can see how it works.
"ruin the story"....
Also remember since this is E3 demo, they had a certain time frame that they were allowed to show the video, it'd eat into their time if they didn't have the no i can't die mode on, restarting over and over cuz you died would kind of not allow them to show everything
Really liked it, however I did find the facial animations to be quite stiff. I hope the personal conversations you have back at camp and stuff are at least better fine tuned.

You mean the ones who made DA:O a success? Also when a game dev talks about one thing and shows another, most tend to not believe them until it is shown effectively.

This doesn't make sense to me, most fights aren't story based, but whatever let's just go with that regardless. They could literally show the exact same fights we've already been shown in these two videos, but actually do them for real with a normal difficulty, no party invulnerability and realistic use of pause and play. The fight with the Venatori Spellbinders and warriors at 5:25 was the only fight that showed any real semblance of strategy, but that was only at the start since they all dropped like flies in 20 seconds after the initial attacks. Every other fight has just been running around using abilities with minimal lip service to pause and play.
If they really want to highlight the dynamic nature of the combat system and how it allows you to do both pause and play and full realtime action they should make videos that do just that. You take one encounter go into and show how you can handle it without every pausing or controlling party members, then go through it all again pausing and issuing tactics the entire time to show that you can do it that way if you want. And if they're really feeling special they could do the fight again a third time with a mix of real time combat with then pausing to issue orders when necessary or when a particularly good cross class combo or situation shows up.

They made a demo knowing that gaming journalists that know nothing about the mechanics are going to play it. Without any tutorials. I'm not sure if their current build has a high difficulty setting hammered down.
Would be neat to see some difficult combat though. But I'd rather have more info on the crafting or the mouse and keyboard UI at this point.

So called "hardcore" fans were a minority of Origins' audience too, friend. Sorry to tell you.
You mean the tactical controls and battlefield shaping abilities that the devs have made a point to show in their demos? Yeah, they're there.
I believe that the main "villain" is connected to the Venatori. He is a misunderstood antagonist, who's goal is to end the mage/non-mage conflict permanently by turning every mundane being on Thedas into Mages. This is because magic cannot be taken away without causing tranquility, and new mages will be born. He will do this by getting rid of the veil, so he can expose every mundane, none-magical being in Thedas to magic. Making the "change" that we have been hearing about from Sandal, and other characters like Morrigan, and Flemeth, possible.I will tell you why he is a male. But first read Sandal's prophecy, and watch the Dragon Age Inquisition Pax Demo 24:34Sandal says: "When he rises, everyone will see."This of course can be referring to the Inquisitor who can be male or female, but the inquisitor isn't the one who caused the veil tear, or the one making this change in the world. He's trying to find the guy doing this.During the pax demo, the Venatori Enchanter yelled out: "He will reign!"We don't know what caused the veil tear, but we do know that the inquisitor was there, and that he has a choice; to stand against the closing darkness/change, or leave this world to its bitter "end"/ to accept the change
I'm fairly certain you posted this exact same post somewhere before. Also the mundanes to mages thing sounds like a godawful ME3 ending.
