@Heimdall:  I disagree.

The Hindu Vedic wars are between divine beings are are complex manuscripts.

The Greek epics are also excellently written material.

The Bible is an anthology of human relationships with a deity presumed real in the narrative.

I do not believe keeping Thedas' deities mysterious does any particular thing to add to the narrative (though it may make the forums more colorful).

That being said - whatever the story presents, I'm playing my character very Fade-savvy.  Not a thing from the Fade belongs in this world - god, demon or spirit.  They've all got to go.

I am pretty sure that the gods of thedas are going to remain mostly absent though. I mean they have said they have no intention of making the Maker less mysterious.

There's at least one thing Hindu Vedics, Greek Epics, and Bible stories all have in common: one has to take it on faith that anything in them could be true. The same is true of the stories the Dalish tell of their pantheon or the Chantry tells of the Maker. Those stories reflect a great deal about the Chantry and elves themselves, but the instant you start introducing proof into the equation it removes the focus from people and focuses it on gods.

That's what the mysteriousness adds, it keeps the narrative focused on people, grounded. The conflicts are about people and their struggles with one another and alongside one another. If they start making this about gods, that focus is hard to maintain.

I won't speculate as the name of the Elder One but it is possible we have seen a stylised representation of it: the Lyrium Idol.     I'm thinking there could be a connection because of the presence of red lyrium on the surface of Thedas which seems to be erupting from the ground in the vicinity of Fade tears.   The idol was clearly the image of some sort of entity that the people of the ancient thaig worshipped.    Proximity to the idol or anything made from it, sends people mad, presumably crazy enough not to worry that a Fade rift will destroy the world.    Essentially it fuels chaos, which is necessary to fuel the expansion of the rift.      A small piece of refined red lyrium (as opposed to the raw stuff which is everywhere) is found on one of the Venatori.   I wouldn't be surprised to find them everywhere that there is chaos.  It has been hinted that it is no coincidence that all this trouble and unrest has occurred at the same time and that someone is actually behind it.  The ultimate goal of the Elder One is to remove the barrier between the Fade and the material world, in which case, as has been stated by a developer somewhere, the demons do win.   So far as I am concerned, in the world of Thedas, powerful ancient spirits/demons and gods are terms that are interchangeable.    However, it could be an ancient elven dreamer operating through the Fade but located in that in-between world we see in Masked Empire.

Speculative idea: the elves were originally spirits that became material in the way that Imshael can, so they were magical and immortal.   When Fen'Harel created the Veil they were cut off in the material world, so they lost their immortality and became truly mortal.   This occurred around the time that humans first appeared, hence them being blamed.    Then their magical gift got transferred to the human race through inter-race unions with the resulting offspring always being human.      The ancient Magisters suspected the origins of the elves, saw them as a threat and in particular the seat of their power, Arlathan, hence them sinking it into the ground.   They were aided by the demon spirits that had originally been opposed to the spirit elves and had been shut away within the Fade, whilst their original material bodies were trapped underground.    Seeking their release, they urged the Magisters to enter the Fade but it went wrong.    Now someone is attempting to do it from the other way round, so instead of mortals entering the Fade to release them, the veil is removed so they can simply walk out.

I'm surprised more people haven't suggested Flemeth, considering how much foreshadowing Morrigan gave us in Origins and Witchhunt DLC, and then Flemeth's own "Get ready for doom" message in Dragon Age 2.

No one else gets some seriously evil vibes?

I feel like if Flemeth wanted to destroy the world and rip open the Veil, she would have done so earlier. What's stopping her? The woman's been around for centuries.

She's definitely up to something, but I have no idea what that is. I'm curious what she's going to look like this time around. Old crone or medieval battle dominatrix?

There's been some speculation that time travel is involved in the Redcliffe/Elder One plot. Sera says "That's how they won. That's how IT won." which also lends credence to the theory - it implies the Elder One has defeated the Inquisition before. There's also the fact that Leliana thought the Inquisitor was dead, and Dorian implied they went through some **** to come back.
If the Elder One is the Big Bad, perhaps the attack on Skyhold that the devs have been hinting at is the Elder One's victory? It wipes out the Inquisition, but somehow the Inquisitor survives and is able to go back in time to change the outcome.

On an unrelated tangent, every time I hear "the Elder One" I just think of "the Old One" from Dragon Age Origins - the possessed ancient oak in the Brecilian Forest. The shriek heard during the demo definitely made me think "dragon" though. We know dragons can be blighted, but what about possessed? Though, dragons are still pretty mysterious and there could be dragons hiding in the Fade that are ten times more BAMF than anything we've seen.

A Malazan fan. I would love to see a game set in that universe.

Am thinking the elder one is another type of dragon or some godlike creature or being. Also I think our inqusitor will prob die at the end of the game or one ending. The hand trick seems idk costly

As much as I would like a walking off into the sunset in Victory, I think you may be right. Things of a Lovecraftian nature tend to demand massive sacrifice to fend them off.

Trust me I bare NO love for the ending. I just happen to be fond of Harbinger. He had a lot of potential imo.

well, if the elder one won before (at Skyhold) then the "time travel theory" is not needed to justify Sera's statement.

That would be funny though if, not long after that the Inquisitor goes through the portal, he manage to reappear completely amnesic at the begining of the game.

Also, Sera said "IT", not he or she. The last time she did that was with Cole, so maybe the elder one is a spirit?

The Elder One, could be anybody or anything I guess...btw did anyone else see that evil looking elf from the trailer...you know, the one with the Dalish tattoos and the black abyssal eyes. I haven't read Masked Empire but...wondering if he could be a possessed version of that elf?

I'm guessing it's something related to the Old Gods and/or the Tevinter Magisters, due to its Venatori following. But maybe that's obvious.

Personally, I hope it's an un-corrupted Old God.
