Are you forced to directly control a player

I was so happy to hear the tactical view from DA:O was coming back to the Dragon Age series.  The tactical gameplay, along with Bioware's fantastic story-telling ability, is what drew me to the series in the first place.

But now I'm worried I got ahead of myself.  I assumed the tactical mode meant combat would be exactly like DA:O where you can issue orders, then sit back and watch a fight play out periodically issuing new orders, but not directly controlling a party member in the conflict.  In other words, even your active party member would continue to attack the foe even if you weren't mashing the attack button.  I loved that; it made you more of a commander than a combatent.  It was unique.

Now I'm worried that's not the case at all.  Yes, tactical view is back, but are you still required to actively participate in combat?

Thanks to anyone who can clear this up for me!

I'm not sure button-mashing would quite work in tactical view, so I think it'll be like origins in that respect.

Don't take my word for it though. I have no evidence for that belief.

It didn't look like that was the case. It appears that you need to control the active member once they are done with the move; the others just continue on.

To be honest, I was not a fan of the combat in DAO. It was boring. I like tactical battle, and so I hope this is a compromise between DAO and DA2.

I think we might have "engage mode" which is detailed here:

Unlike previous BioWare games, which require you to either queue abilities or play in real time, Inquisition offers a third option. By pressing the right trigger in tactical view, you enter what Laidlaw calls “engage mode.” This slowly winds the action ahead and can be immediately stopped by letting go of the trigger.

Keep in mind that this was done on an xbox controller so it's possible that PC versions might just have spacebar as the pause/unpause button again.

Well, tactical view pauses the game, does it not?  What happens once you return to the active view?

Well that sucks for me.  I was at least hoping there was an option for that.

Um, thanks for that input that in no way answers my question.

Hmmm, not sure that's related.  Though I don't fully understand "engage mode", so who knows?!

I don't think that's the case, might want to ask in the scuttlebutt section.

I can't say for sure, but I was kind of under the impression they were showing us how we can use both features in the same fight.  You can just play tactical, or action based (whatever you want to call it since I'm totally drawing a blank at the moment) or you can switch between the two. Granted I could be totally wrong, but that's what I took from the video.

I think it means that when you're using a controller and in tactical view, you can press right trigger which unpauses the game, but remains in tactical view, so you can set up some abilities and moves, press right trigger and see it unfold without taking direct control of a character. Releasing right triggeer then brings it back to pause. Or at least that's how I interpreted it, I could be completely wrong.

Here we go, at 5:53 in this video we can see combat continuing in real time while still in tactical view:

They've said that auto-attack exists, if that's what you're asking
