By which I mean they took a fun and complex character, then had something bad happen to them which is then used as an excuse to write them like a boring, one-note emo, common to fanfictions written by angsty tweens.

Why does Bioware insist on making awesome characters dull?

What? Leliana was tortured by the Mages, so it's natural that she would be a bit hostilic to them. I found Anders an interesting and complex character, definitely one of the more intriguing characters in Dragon Age.

Couple things:

1) We don't know that she's one-note after this.  She's upset with the circumstances at that point in time and she's also just making a statement.  It doesn't equate to "kill all mages".

2) We're told that we were the ones who sent Leliana in and this has a damaging impact on our relationship with her.  It's possible that whatever route was taken to get to this point was opposed by Leliana?  Maybe we didn't listen to her and she ends up tortured as a result?  Whatever happened, it's clear that a bad call was made.  We already know that this entire scene can never even happen depending on what choices we make.  Sounds to me like there will be consequences for the decisions we make that can affect our companions on a personal level. In which case... don't screw up, I guess.

I don't want her to become a radical, insufferable **** like Anders either.  But we can't say for sure what will happen just from this demo.

I loved Anders, but I hope Leliana doesn't be like Anders.

I wouldn't compare her to Anders.

Anders was a homicidal, whiny ass radical that didn't distinguish the good Templars from the bad in DA2. In his eyes they were all guilty and they all deserved to be punished. Granted, it wasn't ALL his fault. Those were his views, but they were amplified tenfold. I miss the Awakenings charming, funny Anders. Justice ruined everything... And he usually ends up dead in my play throughs because I can't stand his whining anymore. Even if every once in a while you'll get that small moment of the past Anders that was lovable.

From what I have seen, she isn't at that radical stage of 'death to all magic wielders!'. Just stating the fact that, yea mages are feared -- this is nothing new to anyone. As previous posts have stated, she WAS just being tortured -- You can't tell me you wouldn't be a lil' sour at first. We don't know the circumstances of why she was sent in there. You can't really judge what kind of character she is going to be based on such a brief glimpse in a very hostile situation. Even though I wanted to smack her upside the head for killing the son.

Anders still harbored a deep hatred for the templars even in Awakening. What see as whining, I saw as someone who cared deeply for his people.

Yeah but he was also more witty and nonchalant In Awakening which is what a lot of people liked about him.

He was also selfish and cowardly in Awakening. Justice gave him a spine, although to paraphrase Joker, he may be beating people to death with it.

:) *chuckles* I know I'm in the minority of those who didn't like him in Awakening nor in DA2.

Cowardly? I don't see where he was

Indeed, and this is not the first time Leliana has been tortured after all. There's a great deal of context missing here, I'd wager.

At least Leliana aged better than Anders. She still looks quite attractive.

I can imagine Leliana isn't too happy that Anders blew up the Chantry in Kirkwall. Might be a little hardened at this point.

I'm not sure whether or not this is a mandatory event. As Lazarus Dark says above the Inquisitor sends Leilana on this mission, so there may be an option to approach it another way. For instance maybe you can go yourself without scouting, send Cullen and troops and have to rescue them instead, who knows. Lets not assume stuff is written in stone there is only a brief snapshot of the campaign in the preview scene so I wouldn't sweat it just yet.

I was never a big fan of Leliana's in DAO, so I'm not sure if I consider this an improvement or not.  She always seemed untrustworthy to me, and it would appear from this brief clip that she will still have an agenda.  This time it may be a hatred of mages, albeit one that has been brought on by her recent torture.  I don't see how this could be considered an "Anders-izing" of Leliena though.  His character was fleshed out more in DA2 then it was in Origins, and he became more "human" (even though he was a mage).  I found his character more likeable but his behavior more reprehensible than Leliana's.
