Hello all. Newbie here reporting in for first roll call. I know it's really late lol, or early depending on where you live. It could even be the afternoon for you which in that case is it near your beer o'clock?

Anyways I will get right down to the nitty gritty. I am new to Dragon Age as a series and was wondering if anyone could give me a quick run down of what is occurring. Who's the big bad of who? Why is everyone fighting? And any general information of that sort.

Also any good resources to understand what is going on better would be vey helpful.

From those of us working terrible night shift jobs! Lol.

There's a wiki that might help you out, but for basics of the universe

Ok so country to country Thedas is the continent it happens on, it used to be the homeland of the elves, humans came over from another part of the world and started taking over. Elves supposedly were immortal before but exposure to humans took away their immortality. Eventually an empire called the Tevinter empirium rose to power, they were ruled by mages and heavily practiced slavery and magic that used the blood and lives of others for power.

Mages, unfortunately, are at a risk to be possessed by demons at pretty much any time. They get their power from something that's sort of a parallel world called the fade, which is the world people dream in, and where magic comes from, and where spirits hang out. Spirits are completely focused on one emotion/aspect and ones that focus on negative ones are called demons and tend to try and get into the real world. Mages connection to the fade makes them a prime target for demons.

Anyway The Tevinter imperium took over most of thedas, and enslaved the elves and lots of humans. A human woman named Andraste and her barbarian husband led a revolution against Tevinter. She supposedly heard the voice of God (who is called 'the maker' in the religion that ends up being founded over her) and Tevinter lost a lot of it's power and other nations started popping up in Thedas. Now the religion based on Andraste is the major religion around thedas.

Elves supported Andrastes revolt and got a homeland back after the rebellion but years later the nations following Andrastes teachings led a holy war against them and they lost their homeland again, now they either assimilate in cities, or go around in roving clans that keep on the move because their religion is illegal.

Qunari are a large mysterious horned race that follow the teachings of a religious leader from I think a few hundred years ago who founded their belief system of the qun. I guess it's more of a socioatal law than a religion? It's sort of a complicated thing where people get their jobs decided for them and don't have real names, just get their job as their name, and the priest caste decides who breeds and says they can't raise their own kids, jobs are extremely gender segregated and they are ruled by a triumvirate called the Ariqun (religious leader) Arishok (war leader) And then another one I forget the name of but they do like the economy and social ****. They are super huge and most have horns but some are born without them.

Dwarves live underground and have beards.

There's a lot more lore, but there's probably people better at explaining it than me.

Dragon Age Inquisition is designed for new players to jump straight in.

In all honesty, the best suggestion would be to play Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, they are not expensive now
and we still have nearly 3 months before Dragon Age Inquisition is released. You're in for a treat if you do.

I'm not sure any wiki can really do justice to the richness of Thedas and in any case the plot has moved on

so short of playing the prior games, the introduction to the new game will cover everything you need to know.

Definitely play DAO & DA2. DAO is a more classic epic fantasy, DA2 is smaller personal story that sets up certain events for Inquisition. Note: Bioware has always been good about integrating new players who have not played previous games so you needn't worry.

You will get a thousand different answers to your question good sir. ALL of them biased beyond meaningful discussion probably.

Instead of listening to any of us and our opinions, I advise you to visit the dragon age wiki for all the information about the setting your heart desire.

My suggestion would be to read this for an understanding of the world: http://dragonage.wik...m/wiki/Timeline

This for the first game and its expansion:

http://dragonage.wik...on_Age:_Origins

http://dragonage.wik...ins_-_Awakening

The second game:

http://dragonage.wik...r_Dragon_Age_II

If I were you, I would just purchase a copy of The World of Thedas. It covers all of the history of the Dragon Age universe in detail and is a great primer.

just go do about 4 hours on the wiki and come back....  it wouldnt be doing the games justice by having a 100 word limit on the plots of 2 games

I agree. Short of playing DAO and DA2 at least, that's the best thing to do.
