As I am sure all of you know, we will get to edit our characters voice again this time around, except unlike back in Origins, our character obviously has a lot more to say than just a few repetitive one liners that make them sound more like a failed amateur-night stand-up comic rather than Commander of the Grey.

In Inquisition, we get to choose between one of two accents.  American and English.  While I wish there were more choices, I am happy with what we are given.  However, I'm curious:  How would these accents work from a lore perspective?  If I choose the American accent, does that mean I am from Ferelden?  If I choose the English one, from somewhere else?

It seems that the English accent is random in Dragon Age and doesn't actually stem from a certain land or people.  Unless you count the Dalish, but if I choose a Human or Dwarf with an English accent, then it certainly wouldn't and couldn't be a Dalish accent so it couldn't just come down to being Dalish.

What are your thoughts on this?

I would've thought - if anything - that an English accent means you're from Ferelden, and an American from somewhere else.

I mean, just look at the Hawkes, Alistair, King Cailan, etc.
American accents are usually used by Dwarves or Qunari.

The Couslands had an American accent, however.  As did Loghain.  And a few others.  I can see where you are coming from, though.  But both accents seem to be oddly random, at best.

The voice option will probably not change your background at all. Trevelyan is a noble name, and it's real life Cornish roots suggest we're Ferelden, even if we're voiced by the American VA. The American VA is likely intended primarily for dwarves and qunari, since they are often depicted with such an accent.

Loghain and the Couslands definitely didn't have American accents, man.

No they didn't. The Couslands and Loghain had English accents.

If it was, it was pretty light, from what I remember.  But it would make sense if they were going for an England vs. France theme, since Orlais immediately reminds me of France for several obvious reasons.

I have a thing for Ferelden so I'll probably go English, since my first play-through will likely be Human rogue.

Then Qunari mage for sure.

Saying the sexy Loghains voice is american annoys me as an English person. You've cut me deep.

What is an american accent? I've lived here all my life and I still don't know what that means. Referring to the South, the Southwest, the midwest, the northeast/west. I'm pretty confused by this.

Its just not what I would have thought of as English.  But I can somewhat see it now, looking up videos of him again.

The accent I heard in England seemed a bit different.  Maybe it was where I was located?  I heard it changes drastically depending on what region of England you are in.

Any of the above. Just like how the English accent isn't the only way English people speak.

I think the one they usually use in DA is from the midwest though. If I'm to be less of a smartass.

Yes. We have more accents than we do inbred royals.

I doubt the voice will have an impact on your character's background. My guess is that will mostly decided by your choice of race, with a little variation depending on your class. If you have a preference for the English or American accent you can then choose accordingly. The other option is to go for the lore-approach and have the human or elf Inquistor with the English and Dwarf or Qunari with the American. At least that's how I see it lore-wise at the moment. We'll have to wait and see, of course, but like I said, at the moment I doubt it'll have an impact on your background.

You're generic American accent, you hear it a lot with news anchors, actors, etc. What you hear from a "normal" person in films. No southern drawl, no e goes to a sound, etc. That's a generic American accent, but of course there are southern, northern, etc accents.

Similarly, Britain has a few different accents, but "English accent" usually refers to the stereotypical one you hear. Of course it's broken down into more accents as well, like the more upper class and then a more gritty street, to use two as examples. I can't remember the exact name for them; I do have a cd that had multiple accents for a play I had to do but can't remember the exact names.

It's called General American, or American Broadcast English, as it's the accent American newscasters tend to  adopt.

Most American accents in the game are this, though I think I caught a mild Canadian accent here and there. And Ohgren had something going on with his accent. Not sure what... Maybe more Midwestern?

I thought Loghain and most of the Ferelden nobles had Londoner accents. But me not being British, I could be wrong...

Accents in DA lore are way more consistent that TES. In Skyrim, people have American accents, Austrian accents, British accents and so on. I'm guessing if you have British accent you are from Ferelden or the Free Marches. If you have an American accent, you're either a dwarf or qunari or if you're human...You're from so other continent.

I just hope that we get a way to alter the voice's pitch. Here is hoping to make a Qunari Inquisitor with a voice resembling the Arishok's

Hmm, Oghren's accent had a bit of a southwestern drawl to it, very "Got drunk and shot the horse". Living in Arizona and the Southwest in general, I hear this a lot

The dwarf inquisitor is a surface dwarf, so could easily have picked up the accent from non-dwarves.

Guess I can see that. I live in the Southwest, but I live in a pretty cosmopolitan city so accents tend to distill down to kinda-sorta General American.

I always assumed that was the reason Bodahn and Sandal have British accents. Though, the fact that Bodahn live most of his life in Orzammar belies that. Maybe he affects it to facilitate trade with Fereldans.

...Or maybe he traded accents with Wynne at some point... Wynne being the only Ferelden with an American accent kinda bugged me.

I hope the Inquisitor's voice changes a bit depending on race, and maybe class.

It would be even better if their voice changed depending on your overall morals and values, based off your decisions and previous dialogue.

yeah I'm also hoping for something like that

the female qunari inquisitor's voice was exactly the same as the human one's but maybe thats because she#s female?

still it could have been a bit more of a deep voice

I completely agree.  I thought the same exact thing about the female Qunari's voice.  It just seemed so... Human.
It didn't sound Qunari at all.  There wasn't even a hint of Qunari in that voice.

I should be able to just hear the voice without seeing a video, and be able to tell "That's a female Qunari!"
