Will Alistair be more help as king or as a warden?

I am re-playing both of the previous games. I usually play a human male mage as both the warden and Hawke for my canon world state, but I just found out you can make it so Alistair stays a warden. Would he be happier that way? If Bethany joins the wardens, could there be a chance of her and Alistair showing up to help the inquisitors?  Maybe my pro-life world should have a non-mage Hawke. Maybe warden Alistair could be more helpful to the inquisition than king Alistair... or maybe I'm just rationalizing because I want Bethany to show up...

I wonder how helpful a drunkard Alistair would be...

Mentions of a rebellion with Teagan supporting Alistair?

They did not even bother making him a warden comander if our warden dies.

As king he can do aalot more than waste away in the deep roads.

I can honestly see a way Drunk Alistair could be the most direct help to our Inquisitor, at least at Redcliffe.

Teagan took him back to Redcliffe, cleaned him up, and put his martial training to use in Redcliffe's milita or guard.  He survives the mage takeover, and is preparing to take the village/keep back when the Inquisitor arrives.  So you'd have Al and some Redcliffe soldiers on your side or holding tactical points as you moved through the town/keep.

That's... pretty good, actually. Maybe too good, if I had to pick a problem with it, but that's the sort of cameo that makes sense in context.

My biggest issue with it is Alistair being cleaned up- but I'm willing to settle.

Why don't you want him cleaned up?

Also, to be perfectly honest, given the way the comics have pushed Alistair as king, I think it's most likely that Alistair-as-king will be the best option.

Now that raises another question will hardened Alistair makes a better king regardless of rules alone or jointly with Anora. I don't expect his role as a warden will have much impact to the story, but I may be wrong though.

Well, if you wanted to make it a bit rougher, Alistair could still be more into his cups than he should be, but still remember his martial training and time with the Warden.  And instead of preparing a counter assault, he's hiding out in the woods with the survivors, trying to decide what to do next.  The arrival of the Inquisitor would be the event that galvanizes them into a force willing to take action rather than huddle in the wilderness.

Nah, I've always disliked Alistair.. part of the reason why i've always supported Anora and spared Loghain.

Well, we'll already have a high level warden in our party so I'd guess as a king?

I did like making Alistair a warden though. He seemed happier but then the city elves get it off way worse. So after a while I just started marrying him to anora so there's a good balance of experience and progressiveness on the throne.

BioWare's own canon has him as king so I'd say that's a safe bet. We already have a seasoned Warden on our side in this game as well.
